For lunch this afternoon, I made myself a delicious bowl of Creamy Broccoli Soup topped with kale chips and walnuts and some Kashi TLC crackers on the side.
Mmmmm”¦ thick, hot, creamy soup on a chilly January day is simply the best.
I only ate a few bites of my soup before I was roped into an intense game of Pug-O-War with Murphy. He’s so darn cute, I couldn’t turn him down.
Playtime started out innocently enough.
Sniffing”¦
Pulling”¦
Tugging”¦
But, then things got a little crazy. (I even broke a sweat!) Murphy showed his stuffed dragon who’s boss!
In order to prove my pug dominance, I must shake you silly!
Dragon, you are weak… and flimsy!
Friend, are you okay? We were just playing, right? I hope I didn’t shake you too hard.
Ok, Mom, enough with the camera.
When pug playtime ended, I finally finished my soup. (It needed a quick nuke it the microwave.)
It seemed like the pug still had some energy to burn, so I took him for a long walk after I ate my lunch (for the second time).
I’m semi-obsessed with NPR (I listen any time I’m in the kitchen or my car), so I searched for an app to listen to it on my iPhone on my walk with Murphy this afternoon. It turns out that NPR has a news app that let’s you listen live or on demand. Cool!
On our walk, I listen to an interesting piece called Where Is Twitter Taking Us? Apparently, Sweden (as in the Scandinavian country) is giving control of their Twitter account to a different citizen every week of this year. How cool is that? Anyway, it was a really great news piece, so if you’re into Twitter, you’ll definitely like it!
Snack
As an afternoon snack, I enjoyed a Maple Scone with peanut butter spread on top. I’ll share the scone recipe soon!
Some serious R & R is on the agenda for this evening. My body is still tired from Monday and Tuesday’s workouts!

Murphy makes me smile every day 🙂 I think about my two crazy dogs and what they are thinking when they are playing and especially when they give that blank and confused stare.
I’m looking forward to that scone recipe!
Murphy is adorable! I can’t believe that little guy has so much energy! Can’t wait for you to share the maple scone recipe… I love anything maple.
I am also obsessed with WBUR – my husband made a donation for me for a Christmas present.
We listened to the station – streaming live- in my car on our way back from NJ over the holidays. I was also thinking of trying to find a small sound system (inexpensive) to hook my iphone up so I can listen to WBUR or podcasts while I make dinner…!
Wait, you’re saying Sweden is a country?! Just teasing. Couldn’t resist 🙂
cute commentary from Murphy’s play time 🙂
I have an IPOD dock in my kitchen too and love listening to music and podcasts while I’m cooking.
I have that same bowl:) Love the soup!
What a fun game! Love the photo blur pic!
I too am tired–can’t wait to hit the hay 🙂
Love npr, my favorite show on there is Wait Wait Don’t tell me
Me too!
Sweden is one of the few countries cool enough to do that 🙂
I can’t wait for the maple scone recipe!!! cold soup…I have to say I’m a fan, sometimes the flavours are more intense when cold! 🙂
It’d be one hell of a Twitter show if the US decided to let us do that for a year hahaha. Rather than shaking the life out of his toys, my dog prefers to take out their eyes and noses 😛
Seriously! Haha!
Delicious-looking soup. That twitter piece sounds fascinating!
Mmmmmm, Maple scones. Sounds great Tina! Can’t wait to see the recipe.
Oh and I’m uber excited to be coming up to Boston in a few weeks, yay! I’m like “must go to Marylou’s while in town”.
Yay! You won’t regret it! 🙂
My lunch today was interrupted by puppy playtime too- it’s very hard to turn down an itty-bitty, 10 week old puppy! I’m having a hard time putting him in his crate [although they assured us it’s the best way to crate train him] and hearing him whine… I’m a sucker for sweetness 😛
OH, my goodness, how much Murphy reminds me of my Flora when it comes to puggy playtime! We call it “gettin’ puggy” in our house! 😉 He is so freaking cute. I, too, adore NPR, Tina, and am so excited to hear about this app! It will be going onto my iPhone and iPad directly!! Thanks for the tip!
Question for you–as you increased your mileage/frequency of weekly runs over time, did you find you were more fatigued initially? I have been really exhausted lately (not sure if it’s partly due to the holiday season we just went through!), and am a little concerned as to why… I’ve definitely been running more, so that’s a possible reason. Your soup lunch looked delish!!
Yes, definitely! It gets easier though. Hang in there! If you need to take a rest day, be sure to give yourself a break. I always feel better/stronger after a day off!
Murphy is so cute!! 😀
I don’t think we will ever see the U.S. giving control of their twitter account to citizens. The Scandinavian countries are much cooler than us about those things!
I’ve been on a scone kick lately so I can’t wait to see the Maple recipe.
Haha! No kidding!
Murphy is so cute playing tug of war!
Your maple scone with pb sounds delicious!
i can’t live without NPR on my iphone!
Dogs playing with their toys always cracks me up for some reason!
Murphy is so cute! My dachshund does the same things. Shakes her toys and then proceeds to pull all the stuffing and squeaky part out.
I had a horrible tooth extraction today so I also made broccoli soup and put steamed veggies in it and then used the immersion blender and made mush and added ground flax seeds. It was delicious. Do you grind the nuts?
I also love NPR. I love to listen to CarTalk when I need a good laugh
The walnuts?
I’m going to have to check out that NPR app!
mmmm I love Kale Chips! I always pick some up from Whole Foods when I go. I have tried to make them at home before with my dehydrator, but they never seem to turn out tasty like Whole Foods kale chips. Have you ever tried to make them from home?
Yep! I make them quite often! They’re so good!
@Tina: I think I need to try another recipe, for some reason mine always turn out no bueno! They are definitely such a great snack tho, love them and especially the ranch flavor at whole foods. YUM!
My recipe is really easy, but you just gotta keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t burn! They cook fast!
@Tina: I will definitely give your recipe a try! Thanks so much, I really appreciate it!
Love Murphy’s playtime pics! I can never resist my Lilly either!
I have a question about Thai food! What do you believe is the lowest in calorie and most healthy choice when ordering food from a Thai restaurant?
Hmmm… I’d probably order something with a lot of veggies, lean protein (chicken, pork, seafood/fish), and avoid the thick, greasy sauces.
@Corisa: Cooking Light does a nice series on healthy picks for each restaurant. Here’s their Thai version: http://www.cookinglight.com/eating-smart/smart-choices/healthy-thai-food-options-00412000068390/ 🙂
Awesome! Thanks for the link!
@Tina: Sure thing! 🙂
Ah! I’m SO addicted to NPR!! That makes me so happy to hear!
I LOVE murphy pics. Love the “friend, are you okay” one. My toy poodles do the shaking silly thing. Then they get all upset when I have to take a toy away b/c they ripped the stuffing out of it!
Murphy is so much personality housed in such a tiny pug body!
Maple scones topped with peanut butter sound dreamy!
Pugs are a lot of dog in a small package! 🙂
I just downloaded tune in radio for my iPad so good must download
Love when puppies play crazy like that … 🙂
Yes, wondering if you ground up the walnuts in the soup or just put them on top?
i just discovered my love for scones. can’t wait for the recipe!
Yum! I want to try that soup, it looks great! and yes please give the scone recipe! I LOVE scones..I always make your pumpkin choc chip ones!
I made some homemade butternut squash soup yesterday..it was amazing and so easy!!
20 oz peeled and cube butternut squash (i bought the already peeled and cubed cuz im lazy!)
4 cups of fat free chicken broth
1/2 onion, sauteed in 1 tsp olive oil
1 apple chopped
salt
pepper
teaspoon curry
teaspoon nutmeg
teaspoon cinnamon
combine all ingredients in large pot and bring to a boil..reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes or until squash is very tender!
carefully pour into blender to blend and make soup! 🙂
yummy!
Theres the recipe if you were interested! It was super easy and delicious!
Could you even imagine the stuff American’s would say and do on Twitter on behalf of the country? I’d be scared!
Love that Murphy:)
That soup looks so good – and topping it with kale chips? Over the top! I never would have thought of that!
I’ve got kale in my fridge…and a new year’s resolution to try it again (and find a recipe I like for it). Looks yummy when you sneak it in like you did. 🙂
Nothing better, in my opinion, than a scone in the afternoon…with PB…even better! And a cup of tea. Yum!
Can’t wait for the scone recipe! Love a warm slice with a cuppa milky tea…haha I’m so British 🙂
Hahah love the total of this post! Cold coffee rocks, but cold soup? Not so much 🙂

Kashi TLC crackers are my favourite thing to eat with soup – they’re so addicting!
Thanks for the heads up in the NPR app! I listen to NPR every morning in the car on my way to work.
I love NPR too! I grew up listening to it especially on Saturday mornings. Click n Clack and Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me were always family favorites. Did you see that Wait Wait went to England to film an episode? It was on BBC America in the last week or so.
Love that pug! Great pics of Murphy playing…he’s too cute!
What other Sweden could you have been referring to? Haha.
@Rachel: I just meant to point out that the country (as a whole) has a Twitter account. I couldn’t even imagine the US doing that!
@Tina: It totally agree!
@Tina: I totally agree!
