Children of the 80’s

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Ok, this post is sort of random, but Mal and I had such a blast last night reminiscing (and laughing) about the ridiculous toys and games we had as kids, I thought it would be fun to do on CNC today.

Do any of these look familiar?

ecstasy-pills-dinosaurssimonPrint1984_11980s_toys_speakandspell_slide1The talking, animatronic teddy bear was huge hit for manufacturer Worlds of Wonder. With technology that seems passe today, Teddy would read stories from a tape deck implanted in his back. Despite the big sucess of Teddy, Worlds of Wonder couldn't find another hit and declared bankruptcy in 1988. Manufacturer Backpack Toys is releasing a digital version of Teddy Ruxpin this year. 073108fashionplatesgarbagepailkids4setpound-puppiesmadballsE17982E3

I’m pretty sure I haven’t though about Fashion Plates or Mad Balls since the 1980’s. What a blast from the past!

As you can see, I totally embrace the 80’s, and, in the past, I’ve blogged about my other favorite toys, including Skip-Its, Pocket Rockers, and Pogo Balls as well as my favorite music, celebrity crushes, and Punky Brewster on a multiple occasions. (I always thought she was so cool.) I really loved being a kid in the 80’s.

Last Night’s Dinner

Last night’s dinner was quick and simple: homemade pizza on a Boboli crust with shredded cheese, sauce, sliced red bell pepper, leftover ground beef, and Garlic Gold Italian Blend sprinkled on top. Holy delicious. Pizza never gets old for me.

I paired my slice of pizza with a salad topped with flax oil and balsamic vinegar.

This morning’s breakfast was Overnight Oats in a Jar, which I know you’ve seen on CNC a zillions times in the past, so here’s a photo of the face that stared at me while I ate it:

Murphy could not wait to lick the inside of the jar! What a freak.

Mid-morning, I snacked on two cinnamon raisin Sandwich Thins topped with peanut butter. I took a lunchtime yoga class, so I made sure to eat a substantial snack before I left for it. I hate having a grumbling stomach during class.

When I got home from yoga, I made lunch, which was scrambled egg whites with shredded cheddar cheese, Garlic Gold nuggets, pepper, and red pepper flakes mixed in with a salad on the side.

After lunch, I ate a few spoonfuls of Peanut Butter Cup ice cream right from the container. I wasn’t hungry, but I wanted a little something to satisfy my sweet tooth. It worked.

P.S. I added a beer category to my blog, which includes lots of posts devoted to reviews and events. (You know it was only a matter of time until I added this category!)

  1. This is great!!! I was totally Rainbow Brite everything, and My Little Ponies. Do you remember Wrinkles? I still have two that I have handed down to the kids. Eeek! Not to mention my love for rollerskating in my white skates with hot pink wheels! Memories!

  2. I still have my “SIMON” downstairs. I should pull it out and see if it still works. I spent way too many hours on that game.

  3. I was reading about your 80s toys and thinking about things I used to love, and randomly remembered Sylvanian Families! Do you remember those? They were these little, hard, fuzzy toys in the shape of different animals, and they lived in treehouses. Man, I loved those little guys. Also – one of my boyfriend’s prized possessions is a collection of Garbage Pail Kids cards in mint condish.

  4. Those pug eyes get me every time!! Simon Says is burried someone deep in my parents atic. Pretty sure we broke the back off it due to fighting over who gets to play with it.

  5. OMG FASHION PLATES!!! I had totally forgot about those!! I loved that so much…brings back so many memories!!!

  6. None of those games or toys made it to the 90s, I think. My friends and I were all about silly putty, monopoly, beanie babies and HARRY POTTER! Pokemon was also a huge hit, but I won’t admit it…LOL

  7. LOVE my little ponies (still have some)….when I was little I coloured on a bunch of mine/my older sister’s….she was NOT pleased! 😛

  8. I’m a child of the 70’s…but, Oh my goodness!! TEDDY RUXPIN and POUND PUPPIES!!!! Does anyone remember the Beverly Hills Teens!?!?!?!?

  9. Love the 80’s. I try to force 80’s toys on my Little Mama, works like a charm since I’m the one with the money. Care Bears, Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake…love!

  10. Although I was born in the last month of 1989, I still loved My Little Pony as a kid!
It’s funny you wrote about memories from childhood today, I posted about it to, talking about memorable video games from the 90s 😀

  11. Hooray for the ‘beer’ category!
I also loved being a kid in the 80s… and played with My Little Ponies well into the mid-90s 😀 My sister and I had quite a few between the two of us (as in, more than 50) and would spend hours at a time ‘playing Ponies.’ Now as adults, we crack up every time we reminisce about each pony’s personality or accent we gave them.

  12. OMG I forgot about Fashion Plates! That would keep me entertained for hours! I love anything and everything 80s! I use to have a strawberry short cake doll, and her dress flipped around and she literally turned into a cupcake. I guess she was a girlie transformer. And then there were these bird things with super long tails, I forget what they are called. I had pound puppies, and my little ponies, and Simon…ah childhood…

  13. i seriously loved fashion plates. totally forgot they existed!! and simon!! love this!

    love the beer category- thanks!!

  14. I still have a rainbow brite doll and an e.t. I loved fashion plates and my little pony. Some other 80s favs were popples, cabbage patch kids, and strawberry shortcake.

  15. Fashion Plates!! I had completely forgotten about that one – and several others you pictured. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

  16. ahh, oh my gosh… the memories… i used to be a die hard rainbow brite fan! and i always wanted a teddy ruxpin but alas never got one.

    ha! so cool!

ps. can’t wait for the bake sale!

  17. Hi Tina! I am teenage girl who is fifteen years old. I love your blog and I know that you have been working to lose your marathon weight. I am receiving treatment for low thyroid levels after years of strange symptoms, one of them being weight gain. My doctor insures me that it will go away once I get thee right dose but meanwhile I am stuck eating healthy foods, trying to lose weight, and gaining instead. I hate the way I look and want to do something about it but I’m not quite sure the best way to do that. Do you have any advice? I realize you are not a doctor but you are an amazing role model in this aspect! Thank you so much!

  18. Popples – CHECK!
    Fashion Plates – CHECK!
Speak and Say – CHECK! (my first “computer”???)
Pound Puppies – CHECK!! (still have one!)
Alf – Check!!! (still have a stuffed one!)

  19. Sadly I can’t really relate to any of those- I was a 90’s kid :)! I can relate to that breakfast though- I also had overnight OIAJ but unfortunately I used a dark choc dreams jar so it wasn’t as peanut buttery as I would have liked! Either the chocolate overpowered the peanut butter or I had scraped the jar too much- left it too late! Is it completely gross that my last bite miiiight have looked like that of Murphy’s? 😉

  20. Omg, fashion plates! I’ve come across a number of these types of posts from other blogs in recent years, but nobody has mentioned fashion plates. I loved those! 🙂 Teddy R., Pound Puppies, My Little Ponies, all beloved classics. I had so many different varieties of those “Speak and Spell” things too.
