Celebrating Mal’s 34th Birthday

Hey, hey!

Mal’s birthday was yesterday (and we lovvvveee birthdays in our house), so our celebration started over the weekend and continue late into the evening (with Funfetti cake) last night. Here’s a recap of the festivities!

Mal is a huge soccer fan, so he wanted to see the New England Revolution play on Saturday night, so that’s what we did and it was such a great idea. We live fairly close to Gillette Stadium where they play, so it took us no time to drive there and getting tickets was a piece of cake. The weather was also pretty warm, so we grabbed dinner on the roof deck of Bar Louie at Patriot Place and then walked over to the game.

The Revs actually ended up losing (whomp whomp), but Mal and I had an absolute blast at the game. (Some adult beverages may or may not have been involved.) In fact, we enjoyed ourselves so much, we are seriously considering buying season tickets for next year.

Yesterday, Mal’s actual birthday, started with an early-morning Starbucks run with Quinn, who was just too excited to sleep on Dada’s birthday. We were up and running at 5:15 AM, so Mamma needed coffee in a bad way. Mal loves Starbucks iced coffee, so I ordered his without ice (so it wouldn’t melt and water it down) and then put it in the fridge until it was time for him to drink it.

When we got home, Quinn and I made a special birthday breakfast for Dada: Almond croissants (from Trader Joe’s), cheesy eggs (Mal likes them with A LOT of cheese) and fresh strawberries and blueberries.

And, of course, there were presents waiting for Dada. (Please note the bug gift bag from Quinn. Bugs are the new cool thing in his life nowadays.)

Quinn got Dada a t-shirt for his favorite Premiere League team (Southampton) as well as…

… a mini one for himself, which Mal was even more pumped about! Twinsies as if they weren’t already!

Quinn also bought him and Dada matching wood grain sunglasses because the two of them are the coolest.

And, finally, Mamma helped him put together a flat lay since Dada loves them so much. (Mal’s Instagram feed is literally flat lays, Olympic lifting, and friends’ photos.)

After breakfast, we went to CrossFit where we did some running and heavy Squat Cleans. Then, I headed into MGH for an Entyvio infusion. It was my first post-loading dose stretch, which I had hoped would bring me to 8 weeks, but, unfortunately, things started to get pretty bad last week, so my doctor moved up my infusion by a week. *sigh* I know it’s a new drug, and it’ll probably take a little while to figure things out, but I had really hoped Entyvio would put me into remission. Anyway, just wanted to give you guys a quick update… back to Mal’s birthday celebration!

When I got home from my appointment, we played for awhile and then headed to Hingham Beer Works for an early dinner.

Beer Works is usually one of our go-to restaurants, but, wow, it was terrible yesterday. The service was bad. The food was even worse. (My ahi tuna salad is pictured below. Blah.) I’m not sure we’ll return any time soon.

Despite the sub-par birthday dinner, we managed to turn things around with some playing, rock throwing, and running around outside.

It was almost Quinn’s bedtime when we got home, so I put him down and then Mal and I enjoyed a piece of his birthday cake– Funfetti, of course!

  1. Hey Tina, I am from the UK, where Soccer is Football and also, you know, life and death to pretty much the entire male population! I was just wondering how on eath Mal came to be a fan of Southampton! That seems quite random and I’d love to know the story behind it. Love the blog by the way, I have been a long time lurker and it was your blog that got me into Crossfit more than 3 years ago and I haven’t looked back since so thank you!

    1. You know what, I’m not sure really sure how Mal picked Southampton. He used to talk to our old neighbor all the time about soccer (although, he had a different favorite team), so maybe he influenced him somehow? I really have no idea. I’ll have to ask him!

So glad you’re enjoying CF! It’s really the best! 🙂

  2. I always get a triple layer funfetti cake on my birthday! There’s nothing better than eating leftover funfetti cake for breakfast the next day too 😉 Glad you guys had a great day!

  3. My husband is a huge fan of Arsenal. The Premiere League is on in our house every Saturday. I like Tottenham, purely because when I studied in London, I lived on Tottenham Court Road. Have you and Mal seen the the “Ted Lasso” commercials for the Premiere League from a few years back with Jason Sudeikis? They are hilarious!

  4. TOTAL Premier League fan over here, although now I guess we’re Championship fans because our team is Newcastle 🙁 (This year was HEARTBREAKING & the team deserved so much better)

But on a happier note, Funfetti cake is AMAZING & perfect for birthdays, though I don’t say no to white cake with chocolate frosting 😉

  5. I loved all of your snaps from yesterday’s adventure! Looks like you and your family had a lot of fun 🙂 I am partial to any kind of chocolate/peanut butter combination for birthday cakes!

  6. The matching outfit is too cute. I love Something Navy – she is so down to Earth and awesome on Snapchat. My favorite birthday cake is strawberry with funfetti icing or ice cream cake.

  7. Oh so fun! I love celebrating other people’s birthdays. It is just so fun to see them light up with all the extra love on their day. I have never been a fan of cake, so I always request a peanut butter pie, cheesecake, or ice cream cake. Culver’s has my absolute favorite custard cake. It is literally a slab of custard with chocolate sauce and crushed Oreos (no frosting in sight!).

  8. So fun to see another soccer fan! My husband is a big Manchester United fan. We even named our dog Manchester United (Manny for short). We went to a game a few years ago and I was surprised by how fun it was! Love the matching shirts you got for Amal and Quinn!!

  9. funfetti cake is the best! i recently found a recipe for funfetti fudge(not healthy at all!) that i can’t wait to make for my next potluck event. 🙂

  10. Happy birthday to Mal! So glad to hear he’s a soccer fan. My team is the Arsenal Gunners. My husband and I planned our last vacation to London around getting tickets to attend a game last December. It was amazing!

  11. Happy birthday Mal! I’m from New Orleans, and there is a specialty cake there called a doberge cake. It’s amazing and has chocolate or lemon (or both!) pudding in it with poured icing. Literally the best ever. So glad my birthday is coming up soon because now i’m craving it!

  12. Oh wow HBD Mal, we are 4 days apart….I’m May 27th and same age! : ))

    Gemini’s rule!

  13. Happy Birthday to Mal!

On a different note, I just had to tell you, I was reading about turmeric and saw something and thought of you, for when you go into remission on UC.

“In one double-blind, placebo-controlled study, people whose ulcerative colitis was in remission took either curcumin or placebo, along with conventional medical treatment, for 6 months. Those who took curcumin had a significantly lower relapse rate than those who took placebo.”

    1. @Danielle:

Sorry if you’ve already seen this…just wanted to share. I hope that you feel better and the new meds clear it up soon! 🙂

    2. Thanks for the link! Unfortunately, there are studies out there that say just the opposite too, so it’s hard to know what to believe.

  14. Happy Birthday to Mal! My 34th birthday was actually last Saturday and we had white cake with white icing, my usual pick. Although, I also had a delicious chocolate cupcake with chocolate icing the day before at Barnes & Noble 😉

  15. We have a multi-game package for the Revs and I love it!! So much fun and less of a commitment with more flexibility than the whole season

  16. We haven’t picked a Premier League team yet, but we’re really big fans of our hometown MLS team: Sporting KC! In my opinion, soccer games are the most fun sports venue in the city, and that’s including the Royals and the Chiefs!

  17. I just tried hingham beer works this weekend too on Saturday thought it was pretty good. I usually request an ice cream cake or cheesecake for my birthday.

  18. Happy Birthday to Mal! Looks like you guys had an amazing day 🙂 I’m also a big fan of flat lays, the matching sunglasses are adorable! Favorite fashion bloggers would have to be classygirlswearpearls or Jessica from Hapa Time. xo Kelly

  19. We are huge Premier League fans. We are loyal Chelsea fans. Unfortunately, they did not do so hot this season.

You are clearly one of my favourite bloggers. I am also a fan of Unfancy, Run Eat Repeat and Cookies and Kate.

For birthday cake my go to is cheesecake, any type.

Ps where did Quinn buy wood grain sunglasses in toddler size?

  20. I love the fact that Mal is a Southampton fan! I live in Portsmouth, a few miles along the coast, and the two teams are great rivals. Luckily I’m not in to soccer/football, so I don’t get involved!

  21. Please tell me that wasn’t how the salad was served to you! The Beer Works restaurants are usually way better than that! At least it wasn’t Mal’s birthday dinner 🙂
