Good morning! Happy Friday!

I had a tough time getting out of bed this morning. I usually set my alarm for 5:45 AM, but I forgot to set it last night. Mal woke up with his alarm, no problem, this morning, but he let me sleep in. What a nice guy!

A little after 6:00 AM, Murphy came back to bed. (He eats his breakfast and then gets back in bed until mid-morning when I force him to go for a walk.) The pug was all warm and cozy, curled up next to me like a croissant, so it made getting out of bed this morning very difficult. Mal and I actually call this move “carpe diem kryptonite” because Murphy ruins any chance of us getting out of bed and seizing the day. He’s so darn comfortable, we just want to stay in bed and cuddle him all morning long.

Breakfast

Eventually, I forced myself out of bed and made myself some breakfast. On the menu: a French Toast Breakfast Scramble with some butternut squash mixed in. I had about 2-3 tablespoons leftover from last night’s dinner, so instead of tossing it, I saved it for this morning to add into my breakfast. I also drank a decaf iced coffee with almond milk.

As always, I also added a couple of scoops of peanut butter to my breakfast. I finished off the jar, so I let Murphy lick the inside.

The peanut butter jar was actually a plastic one from Whole Foods (their chunky peanut butter is really good, btw), so Murphy had a blast running (excitedly) all over the house with it in his mouth. Usually, I give him an empty jar of Teddie peanut butter to lick, which is glass and a lot heavier and more difficult to move, so he just eats it in one place. The plastic jar was a lot lighter, so he started licking it in the kitchen and then moved to the back room near my office and then finally ended up on the couch to finish it. (I guess he wanted to get good and comfortable while he enjoyed his peanut butter.) Murphy was so cute and he totally made my morning! I love dogs.

Question of the Day

What’s your relationship with the alarm clock? Do you get up as soon as it goes off or do you hit snooze? If you’re a snoozer, how many times do you typically hit it before you get up?

P.S. Just had to share this comic with the zombie (and treadmill?) lovers! Haha!

  1. When I wake up, I’m up. It’s impossible for me to go back to sleep. (Well, if it’s after 5:30. Before then, I can usually force myself) Murphy is the EXACT opposite of my dog. Once you wake up Bentley, even on accident, he’s running around the room. Crazy animals!

  2. When I’m at school, I get up as soon as my alarm clock goes off and i never hit snooze. At home, it’s a different story entirely…

My dog is the same way with peanut butter. Sometimes we use it to put in her medicine so that she won’t just spit out those gazillion dollar pills. Whenever anyone cracks open a jar though, it’s like she can sense it. Or maybe smell it. And she comes running. It’s her sixth sense.

  3. I don’t know how you wake up so early! I’m a morning person but that means like 7:30-8am. 6am I’m still a zombie, although if my alarm goes off, I’m up, and I’m probably not going to go back to sleep.

  4. Awww, Murphy with the peanut butter tub is too adorable! I bet he smelled like peanut butter dipped fritos after that! LOL

My alarm clock is the Mr. The alarm goes off for him at 6:10am and then when he’s done with his morning routine at 6:50, I’m half awake and I’ll get up. The only time I actually hear the alarm is the morning we start our vacation because I sleep really light those nights.

  5. im a seasonal snoozer… in the winter, I will snooze so much! Its so hard to jump out of bed when its so freaking cold outside! But in the summer I cannot wait to get out of bed! Might help too that in the summer I go running before work so I am anxious to get out the door and hit the pavement 🙂

  6. I used to wake up with the alarm, turn it off, then turn around and fall right back to sleep. I was late to a few things because of that. So I started putting my alarm on the other side of the room, so now I have to get out of bed to turn it off, and by then the animals are yelling at me for breakfast or bathroom time.

  7. I may have hit snooze 5 times in my entire life. I’m just too paranoid that I’ll be late if I do.

On a different note, I’m currently eating my first french toast scramble! I’ll be honest, I was skeptical. I couldn’t see how it was going to actually taste like french toast, but it does! Thanks!

  8. I used to be so anti-snooze button and get up right away. Sadly that seems to have passed over the years and I’m back to the snooze button but am working to bash that habit once again. I’ve also been using my “sleep cycle” app again lately hoping it helps time my waking up better so I wake up not feeling like I NEED the snooze button.

  9. Murphy holding the peanut butter jar is priceless. Slap a Christmas hat on him and you’ve got your 2013 Christmas card picture all done. 🙂

I set the alarm for 5:30, hit snooze at 5:40 and slump out of bed at 5:45. I start work at 6:30 so not much time in the morning to sleep in extra!

  10. If I have to be somewhere important I’m awake before the alarm. If I have to be somewhere not so important, I will hit snooze until the last possible second. The one good thing about being a post-grad is that I can wake up when my body is fully rested and I feel SO much better than when I was constantly running on 6ish hours of sleep a night.

  11. I wake up VERY early for work (4:30) so I have to get up or Ill miss my train. My dogs are like Murphy too, and they sleep all day when we are at work.

  12. Aw Murphy is adorable! You just can’t deny that face. I hit the snoozer at least twice. It’s such a bad habit. My mom told me to put my phone across the room so I am forced to get out of bed to turn it off. But that just sounds like torture.

  13. I feel like “snooze” is torture so I just get up right away. I always tell myself that getting out of bed is the hardest part. Once I’m up, I’m up. My husband on the other hand HAS to hit snooze once. It’s so funny some people are definite snoozers and some are not. To each their own!

  14. Olive is the same way about getting out of bed! In fact, she is currently curled up next to me on the couch…and I should definitely be getting ready for work already…oops!

  15. I hit snooze only if it’s still dark outside. You get up early! Do you not have a hard time getting out of bed even if the sun is not out yet? That’s something that I struggle with. When it’s the part of the year when it’s 6 AM and already sunny outside I have no issues getting out of bed, but at this time of year, the sun doesn’t rise until 7:30 AM so it’s so hard for me to get out of bed before then.

  16. I love this question. I’m definitely a bit of a snoozer (and my husband is an extreme snoozer–usually for 30 minutes!), but I’m actually working on getting up with my alarm as part of my new year’s resolutions. I find that snoozing is just wasted time: You don’t really go back to sleep fully, and you’re not up getting your day going. Lose lose!

  17. I generally will wake up right as my alarm goes off, I try to set it at the exact time I’d need to get up without making me late. But, lately it seems as soon as my alarm goes off my boyfriend rolls over and pulls me closer, so I end up staying in bed longer haha.

And I LOVE the zombie comic – sending this to my bf now! We are HUGE zombie fanatics – own all of the Walking Dead graphic novels in addition to watching the show and owning every zombie movie known to man. My boss bought me a zombie-hunting permit sticker for my car at the holidays as an extra joke gift.. Might talk about zombies too much 😉

  18. I am just not a morning person. You’d think after so many years of having to get up to go to work my body would just get used to it, but it is sooo hard for me to get up in the morning so I am a chronic snooze-button-hitter. I always say I’d like to change this so I’m not rushing around in the morning. My old alarm clock just broke so I think I may use this as a catalyst to finally getting a new one and putting it acrross the room so I have to actually get up to turn it off.

  19. I don’t know if you guys watch “Elementary” with Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu (On CBS, I think?). There is a scene where Sherlock Holmes (Miller) is sizing up Dr. Watson (Liu), and he mentions that he knows Watson hates her job. When prompted why he thinks that, he mentions that he heard she has two alarms (she lives with him, kind of as a care taker, if I remember correctly. I only saw the pilot episode). “People who love their jobs only need one reminder to get up in the morning.”

After watching that scene with my dad, I looked over at him and said, “I have four alarms…”

LeSigh. It depends on what I have going on that day, but if it’s just a regular day, my alarm is the enemy.

  20. Haha! The treadmill picture! Lol.
Murphy looks adorbs holding that jar! Seriously, everyday I see pictures of him, it makes me want to get a pug. One day! One day!
I had a hard time getting up this morning. I was supposed to go run, but I didn’t know it was going to be freeeeeezing. So I decided to hold off my run till it warms up. The sun will be coming out, thank goodness. Need a treadmill over here!

  21. Hey Tina long time no chat! I usually wake up naturally/5 min before my alarm clock (or my cat wakes me up for breakfast). I used to do the 6 AM thing, but it was really hard because I usually stay up a bit late. So I changed my work schedule to 10-6 and its amazing! I have the best boss ever. And I never skip workouts now (no excuses!)

  22. I have to get up as soon as the alarm goes off…I feel like it’s impossible to snooze for “just 5 minutes”…I’d rather rip the band aid off and just GET UP.

  23. I usually hit the snooze a million times. Lately though, I have made the effort to get up after the first alarm and it makes a big difference on my energy level. So strange but I feel less drowsy in the morning!

  24. Hitting the snooze button has never really worked for me. I never feel like I get very good sleep when I do that, so if I’m going to sleep in I usually just reset my alarm altogether. That said, I’m pretty good at getting up for my alarm. Doing crossfit has really helped because I want to make good use of my membership and I look forward to seeing people in my morning class.

  25. I have probably around 10 different alarms on my phone. I have such a hard time waking up! ha! 🙂
Normally, knowing Ill have breakfast will wake me up 😉

  26. I’m afraid of sleeping through my alarm, so I usually wake up anywhere from 3-20 minutes before it’s set. And even though it’s a struggle, I get up before it sounds. I’ve never been able to hit the snooze button, so I envy those who do it without a problem! 😉

  27. It would be hard for me not to just cuddle with a dog like Murphy all day, too. So cute and peaceful as he snoozes 🙂
As for the alarm clock, I usually get up as soon as it goes off, but if I’m tired, I’ll hit snooze and turn on my lamp. I usually get up before the snooze alarm goes off. I think the lamp helps me to stop feeling super sleepy.

  28. my bulldog does the same thing! breakfast, then back to bed until we go for a walk hahah … I snoozed a million times but if thats what gets me out of bed at 6am, than I’m gonna keep doing… I used to wake up at 4 am to go to school but know that sounds crazyyy

  29. I’m definitely a snooze button user – usually 2-3 times. I work 3rd shift & have a really hard time getting up after sleeping during the day because I don’t really feel rested. I do pretty well getting on my days off because I sleep at night time & am getting up in the morning like a ‘normal’ person 😉
