I’m pretty sure carb-loading before a race involves beer, right? Yep, I think it does.
After wandering around the city for hours and hours, I met Theodora for a couple of beers at The Ginger Man, a laid-back beer bar featuring 66 taps and over 120 bottled beers.
The Ginger Man was totally my type of bar, and hanging out there was just how I wanted to spend my Saturday afternoon: good friend + good beer. Theodora and I spent a solid three hours chatting away and sipping beer.
My beer of choice was a Smuttynose Wheat Wine Ale, which was “a unique hybridization of two well-known beer styles, combining the rich, voluptuous taste of a traditional barleywine with the subtle, tart flavors of an American wheat ale, topped off with a healthy dose of crisp, herbaceous hops.” I love barleywines, so this beer ruled.
After an impromptu Saturday afternoon happy hour, I said goodbye to Theodora and then met Caitlin and her mom for dinner at Bar Basque.
For my entrée, I ordered the Oxtail in Crispy Bread Ravioli, which was served in a red wine reduction with an herb salad on top. It was tasty, but not at all what I expected. When I read ”˜ravioli’ on the menu, I thought pasta raviolis, which this dish was not. Oh, well. I still ate it.
Along with my entrée, I also shared a bunch of side dishes with the table: roasted veggies and grilled potatoes.
For dessert, we each enjoyed a mini salted caramel ice cream cone. It was the perfect ending to the meal.
I just laid out all of my stuff for tomorrow’s half marathon. I feel so unprepared”” and nervous!
Wish me luck!!!

Ha – my boyfriend LOVES that bar.
GOOD LUCK! You’re going to do awesome 🙂
Hope it went well Tina:)
I hope your half went well today! I’m so jealous of your ability to eat and drink anything you want before a race. I can’t have alcohol and my diet is limited to very plain foods and minimal dairy. Otherwise I get super sick!
Hello, I’m a long time reader and this is my first time leaving a comment. Just wanted to say that carb loading indefinitely involves beer! At least that’s what I told myself when I polished off a delicious raspberry stout last night! Thanks for the great inspiration through your blog, keep up the good work!
I just made it to Ginger Man 2 weeks ago, after living in the city for 7 years! It’s amazing, such a great selection of beers 🙂
Good luck on your race, Tina! I know you’ll PR 🙂
Can’t wait to hear about the race 🙂 I’m sure the beer/carb loading paid off!
Good luck! You will do amazing as always! 🙂
I’m sure you did really well Tina!!! Hope you enjoyed it.
Good luck with your marathon girl! You will do great!
Salted caramel cone. Yummm.
I love the Gingerman! We go in Austin all the time. We got engaged in NYC and went to drink and hang out at the Gingerman NYC that night 🙂
