Call Me “Chalky”

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Hi, guys! Happy Hump Day! Is it H-O-T where you are today? It’s a scorcher here in Boston. We’re at 92 degrees! Yowsahs.

Super hot weather always makes me want to boozeface… like on a boat out in the middle of the ocean. Anyone else? Ok, moving on…

I woke up craving nut butter (like I almost always do), so I added almond butter, sliced banana, and chia seeds to a whole wheat wrap for breakfast this morning. Quick, simple, delicious.

After breakfast, I headed to CrossFit for the 9:00 AM class, which was coached by my wonderful and amazing husband. Mal has taught part of classes, but never a full class by himself, so today was a special day for him””and I promise I didn’t heckle him at all.

Push Press: 15 minutes to establish 1 rep max. Rest 2 minutes between sets.
Beginners perform 5×5 adding weight each set. Rest 2 minutes between sets.

For time:
Handstand Push-ups
Hang Power Snatch
100 Meter Farmers Walk

Rx: (115, 85)
L2: (95, 65)
L1: (75, 45)
Beg: (55, 25)

Mal did a great job explaining the WOD and demonstrating the various progressions for the Hang Power Snatches. He has plenty of years of teaching under his belt, so I’m actually not surprised that he rocked it this morning. Mal didn’t seem nervous at all! Honestly, he was made to teach to CrossFit.

Besides Mal teaching his first class, the best thing about today’s workout for me was increasing my Push Press by 35 pounds! Woohoo!

Back in March, my previous 1 rep max was 65 pounds. Three months later, it’s 100 pounds””and I was so darn close to 105! Next time for sure!

On my way home from CrossFit, I stopped by Dunkin’ Donuts to cash in my birthday beverage card, which was good for a free medium drink of my choice.

IMG_6568 (750x563)

After I snapped the photo above, I noticed how chalky my hands were from practicing Kipping Pull-Ups after class. (I’m getting so close!!!)

IMG_6569 (750x563)

I have to admit, I’m kind of ridiculous with the chalk at CrossFit. My hands are always sweaty during workouts, so I tend to use a lot of chalk, which means I end up getting it all over the place, including my clothes, the box (floors, equipment, etc.), my water bottle, and even my car. I seriously make a mess with the stuff, so Mal has started calling me “Chalky” to make fun of my little chalk habit.

IMG_6571 (750x563)

I ordered my iced coffee at Dunkin Donuts black with a little bit of coconut syrup. It’s always super sweet when get the standard serving, so “a little bit” seems to be just the right amount of sweetness. I added coconut milk to my iced coffee when I got home.

Hey, look, a photo of me with iced coffee! (Please excuse the post-CrossFit bird’s nest hairdo that I’m sporting! Ha!)

A little while later, it was time for lunch. On the menu: “garbage salads.” I pulled out all sorts of veggies and leftovers from the refrigerator and just started adding them to a bowl. I {heart} garbage salads in a major way.

IMG_6592 (750x563)

In the mix: salad greens, tomatoes, carrots, pickles, scrambled eggs with cheese (highly recommended in a salad), cottage cheese, sweet potato wedges, balsamic vinegar, and truffle oil.

After I finished eating my salad, I finished off a can of pineapple and then ate an Adora disk dipped into almond butter.

Video Blog 4 “The Finish” RTB:MA 2012

Here’s the final video from Reach the Beach!

I think Monica said it best when she described the experience as the “time of her life.” I totally agree. Reach the Beach with Team Off Balance was truly one of the best experiences of my life. THANK YOU, New Balance and Reach the Beach!

I don’t think I ever posted the third video in the series (I only tweeted about it), so here’s a link to all of the videos from our RTB adventures:

Question of the Day

Do you have a nickname(s)? What is it and how’d you get it? Do you like your nickname?

My nicknames are “Peter,” “Christine,” and “Tiner.” Here are the stories about how I got each of them.

P.S. If you haven’t had a chance to enter my It’s All About the Cake giveaway on Trading Up Downtown, there’s still time. I’m picking a winner tomorrow morning!

  1. I’ll have to try the coconut coffee thing. I have recently gotten into blueberry coffee from DD, so nothing seems too far of a concept anymore to me =P

KMFT calls me “Chainsaw”, “Jordydrug”, & “Bug”. They all have really long explanations except for Bug, which is just a shortened version of Jordybug. And the stories are sickeningly sweet, so I’ll save you the horror ;]

  2. A couple years ago I set up one of my best friends with one of my husband’s friends (they were married last summer) and then embarked on another matchmaking session with some of our other friends (they just got married two weeks ago). After I attempted some matchmaking for a 3rd time my husband’s best friend came up with Whitler. As in Hitler, as in trying to create my perfect society by marrying up all my friends with my husbands friends. Horrible reason behind the nickname but still pretty funny.

  3. I get called “Peg” all the time but my mom calls me “Pea” short for Sweet-Pea, my husband will call me Peguda (weirdo!), and my dad calls me Poo – Short for Peggi Poo. My co-worker calls me PK since he cannot pronounce my last name, lol!

  4. The heat always makes me crave a cocktail!

I have an insane amount of nicknames from my family. My husband called me “weebles” when I had a boot on due to a foot stress fracture because the boot was higher than most of my shoes so I looked like a weeble wobble when I walked! It was pretty hilarious and made a crappy situation much better.

  5. I actually had the nickname chalky in high school! We were hanging out in a room before basketball practice one day (the boys had the gym first) .. and I was writing on the chalk board.. a lot.. and ended up with chalk all over me. One f my teammates started calling me chalky. She still calls me it to this day (on the rare occasion we see each other).

  6. Oh man, so many fun things to comment on in this post! 1) I’ve had many nicknames over the years – mostly plays on my last name, Barber. Barbershop is one of them (hence, my blog name), and Babar (the elephant) is another! 2) I love salads like your lunch! 3) That’s awesome Mal’s class went well!! 4) I made a “banana in a blanket” for breakfast today – similar to your quesadilla but I just rolled up a whole banana and some peanut butter in a whole wheat wrap. YUM. 🙂

  7. Just FYI: Be careful with the chalk. When you start do mulitple reps of kipping pull-ups, if you have too much chalk it will make your hands rip. Everyone is different in how much they use but typically less is more. I learned the hard way, but now i haven’t had a rip in about 6 months!

  8. Congrats to Mal on teaching his first class!

I have so many nicknames… almost all coming from childhood. I think the one that is used the most is “Mugs” which my cousins later turned into “Mugly”, you know, cause I’m ugly… Oh cousins 🙂

  9. My nickname is boo boo. My family calls me it. When I was born my dad nick named me boo boo from the cartoon Yogi Bear. My other nickname is Xtina. I got it from high school from speech and debate. My roommates also dubbed the nick name Xtina after Christina Agulera. bahaha! Coconut iced coffee sound so refreshing right now. Its currently 93 degrees here in Chicago

  10. There is my nickname! ShannO, short for Shannon lol – remember standardized tests and filling in the bubbles?? Well back in the day there was six spaces for my first name and so ShannO was born, kinda funny that many years later I would end up with my bf who is nicknamed JohnnO by his friends, not even sure why?! lol

  11. Congrats on the increase in weight for the push-press! Woot Woot! I’ve got to ask, and I’m not a “Crossfitter”, but what is the Farmer’s Walk? What I’m imagining in my head is probably too bizarre for Crossfit. ha!

I never really had a nickname. My first name, Sara, doesn’t lend itself to one very easily. Some friends do call me by my last name. That’s about it!

  12. We usuually do salads like that once a week too…usually towards the end when our leftovers have built up and we don’t want to throw anything out. I love random salads like that!!

  13. Congrats to Mal!! That’s really cool. My mouth dropped open when I saw “Tiner” for you too. I’ve been called that, but I hate it (maybe it’s because I’m in the South and when I’m called that, the Southern accent is overly accentuated :)). I’ve been called “Tina Bo” by my grandfather, “Teense” by my aunt and my husband calls me “Boo” or “T”.

  14. I’m new to your blog and love your posts and content. I am a crossfit fanatic too! I am interested in your food choices. You eat many things I don’t/haven’t for fear of putting weight on. I would love to eat the tortilla with nut butter & banana for breakfast and try your iced peanut butter coffee. You are clearly lean, and so am I, but want to be even leaner. I’m also a vegetarian. Can I really eat these foods too?

    1. Yep, you can! 🙂 It’s all about balance and choosing ‘real’ foods as much as possible. But, of course, I enjoy lots of fun foods too!

  15. I would never have even thought to add scrambled eggs to a salad but if you promise it is good, maybe I will have to give it a go, lol! I love the ideas we can find from just simply reading fun little blogs!!!

  16. My Dad’s nickname for me is Tator… which was derived from Tator Tot, which was derived from Potato. Apparently, I was so fat when I was a baby that I looked like a potato, and it’s stuck ever since. Running down the lacrosse field in high school while my Dad yelled “LET”S GO POTATO!!” was an amusing experience. It’s a pretty funny story nonetheless! haha

Going to HLS this summer in Boston – hope to see you there!

  17. Happy Birthday Tina ! I also just recently recieved my free medium drink from Dunkin too =) love it !

  18. I get called Eliza, Liz, Lizzie, Tin Lizzie, EAN (my initials, pronounced like ‘Ian’) and E. Really, though, I just prefer Elisabeth! 😉

  19. My nickname is Posey fo Shosey. I clever guy I know made it up and it just kinda stuck! Posey is my last name and most everyone I know has called me that since I was in 5th grade.

  20. My main nickname has always been Ravioli. I have a really Italian last name & when people would hear it for the first time, they would always say it reminded them of “ravioli” because they rhyme lol. Then I also have the normal ones like Alys & Lyss.

  21. can’t wait to watch the latest reach the beach vid!

congrats to Mal on his first full teaching class too!!

some people called me “Raxo”, because I actually received a paycheck once that was made out to Rob Raxo instead of Fiasco. Having Fiasco as a last name leads to a lot of conversations and misspellings, that’s for sure. 🙂

  22. I love that now that I do CrossFit I actually know what the eff you’re talking about when you explain workouts! It’s so cool! I haven’t gotten a hang of the kip yet either. Tough stuff! Congrats on the new PR!

  23. Damn Tina look at those shoulders! I am amazed at what you do in CrossFit – planning on getting started myself soon with your former favorite, Bodypump! Work my way up 🙂

  24. My sister calls me Kiki because I’ve always been obsessed with Julia Roberts and in the movie America’s Sweethearts, her sister (Catherine Zeta Jones) calls her Kiki- I like it because its something just between my sister and I. My other friends call me Quade (my first name starts with a K and my last name is Wade), and one of my friends calls me Gerbil, I kind of forget where that one came from but definitely don’t like it! Haha. I love the DD iced coffees with a “little” caramel- it really is quite sweet but with some of that syrup I don’t need to add anything else to it.
