This afternoon, Mal and I took Murphy to a nearby state park for some fresh air andย exercise.
At the beginning of our hike, the pug let out a huge yawn, but, little did he know,ย there was going to be no shortage of excitement during his travels through the park.
Once we got past the parking lot and onto the hiking trails, we let Murphy off-leashย so he couldย do his own thing. Most of the time this not an issue because Murphy listensย to us, especially when we have treats nearby. He listens really well then.
Mal and I letย Murphy lead the way while we followed behind. We really had no reason to worry about him on his own.
Mal and I chitchatted, enjoyed the scenery, and soaked in the nice weather.
And then…
Murphy fell into the lake!! I still have no ideaย how itย happened.
Poor Murphy didn’t realize just how steep the rock was and ended up slipping into the water. Thankfully, I was pretty close by, so I grabbed his harness and fished him out. It’s a good thing pugs can swim!
Murphy looked so panicked in the water, but he was totally fine once he was on dry land. Mal and I were definitely more freaked out than he was.
Once Murphy was safe and sound, we continued hiking with our wet dog.
We kept a much closer eye on him during the second part of our hike. What a little bugger.
Good times.

ahahah!!! Poor Murphy! I bet he felt good to cool off! Charlie hasn’t gone swimming yet – I’m nervous to see how he does!
OMG poor Murphy! I love the beautiful scenery pics though.
What a beautiful hike!! Poor Murphy! Those rocks sure are tricky! But I am sure that water felt good and cooled him down.
haha, it’s like a little child! Poor Murphy!
Our dog fell in our pool when she was 9 weeks old (luckily we were in it at the time and puller her out quick) and I’m pretty sure that traumatized her b/c she HATES water now.
Silly Murphy! I bet he just gave you that “I MEANT to do that” look. ๐
@andrea @ a cake for a wife: Haha! He did!
Poor thing. And poor you two, too! A few years back, our Frenchie ran into the Swan Pond in the Public Garden. She was off leash, too…just trotted around a big tree and into the pond. I rounded the tree just as she dropped below the surface. And she DROPPED! Glad to know Murphy can swim…I had to jump in after our girl in order to fish her out. She was definitely not swimming! All was fine afterward. She seemed hardly phased and we were both overloaded on adrenaline for quite a while afterward.
Wow, that looks like a beautiful hike! Poor Murphy, though. I’m glad it turned out all right.
I am so glad that Murphy is ok but that had me LOLing!!!!! Poor little guy!!! But, too funny! ๐
Aw, poor baby! Glad he’s okay ๐ I have a parakeet that is intrigued by water. He found out that he can’t swim when he jumped in the water as I was washing dishes. Luckily I grabbed him before he drowned- parakeets can’t swim!
Omg poor Murphy! If my cat ever fell into the water, he’d be so angry… Does Murphy like water?
@Liv @ The Salty n’ Sweet: No! He really doesn’t. Poor guy.
Oh the pictures of the lake and park are just beautiful! Summer in full swing, love it!
Poor Murphy, though!
Haha! Awww poor Murphy!
Oh my gosh, how scary! Good thing that wasn’t my puggy – mine sinks in the water, butt-first, like a sack of potatoes! Glad Murphy is okay!
Poor puppy dog! But beautiful park! I’m a new-minted Boston local — would you mind letting us know what park that is and where it’s located?
@Ali: I’m not sure of its name, but it’s in Abington.
Noooooo Murphy! Maybe he liked the swim and he is ready for a sprint triathlon?
Glad he’s ok…kinda funny though! And great pics!
Oh my gosh, I literally just teared up! I have seriously grown to love little Murphy like he is my own! What a cutie pie.
Aw, poor Murphy!! I can just imagine him being all panicked in the water. Must have done a number to your guys’ blood pressure!
Poor Murphy! That would be so scary!
haha that must’ve been quite a shock for Murphy! I’m glad he doesn’t seem too traumatized by the incident!
Oh my! I don’t know if I should feel ashamed for laughing so hard a poor little Murphy! I’m glad he’s okay, but that was hilarious! LOL’d at work ๐ Thanks for the giggles!
BAHAHAHA I can’t believe you stopped and took a picture of Murphy in the lake first. Poor guy.
Oh wow, Alouysius hates the water so much, I can’t imagine how he’d do if he had to swim. Glad Murphy is OK!
Aww poor Murphy – how traumatic! Looks like he made a speedy recovery at least.
Murph!
Our pug can swim but she doesn’t really like it.
Awww poor Murph! Whenever I’m at my parents in FL, I put Lincoln in the pool. He absolutely hates it but that little guy swims to the other end then climbs out on his own!
I’m presuming this is somewhere in New England. It’s so beautiful! I spent a week in Massachusetts two weeks ago and have very similar photographs! Reminded me of how much I love that part of the country.
LOL, poor Murphy! Glad he’s ok!
Poor little Murphy in that dark lake! I’m sure he was more suprised than anything!
poor murphy!!!
glad he’s ok! ๐
I would say that the answer is “yes, but only when one has to!” Poor little Murphy. I hope that it was at least warm out!
my jack russell once fell into a pool and freaked out so bad. he looked like he was walking on water he was moving his limbs so fast!
bahaha awww murphy! Water is definitely not his thing! I wonder if all pugs can’t swim??
Oh my gosh! I held my breath that entire post! Glad he is okay! I think I am going to get a kiddie pool for my pugs. Teach them to swim in shallow water! I have seen some pugs swimming on YouTube. They really Swim fast too!
Awww.. I am glad that Murphy is okay. Since he is okay.. it is kind of funny that he just fell into hte lake. I picture him walking along the side.. and just tipping over (Although that is surley not how it went down!)
poor murphy! my pug, izzy bicuits, cannot swim…she loves water but panics when her feet leave the ground and sinks!
Awww Poor Murphy!!! I was afraid you were going to say that he feel in! ๐
avid reader here. just curious, but how is Mal hiking in flip flops? love your blog, keep up the good work!
Your blog title made me curious where this post was heading! My first response was throw him in and find out! ๐
Murphy looks so cute clinging to the sides. Good thing you were close by. I’m sure he was just exploring and fell in.
Beautiful scenery!
Aww, POOR MURPHY! I’m glad he’s okay!
Pugs just wanna have fun!
Ahh poor Murphy! I hope he isn’t too traumatized. ๐
Awww poor thing! When I had a beagle, we tried to teach him to swim. He was never a fan so we gave up ๐
When I was in high school my dog fell into our pool. I was so panicked that I jumped in after him. This was back in the day when you had “film” for a camera. I didn’t realize it, but I had the roll of film from my prom in my pocket. Oh the things we do for our dogs! It’s probably better water spots came out on my dates face anyway…
Happy Friday!!!
I was not expecting that turn of events and I’m guessing neither did he! Poor Murph. Haha, what cutie though. ๐ Hike looked awesome.
My fiance and I took our pug Zombie to his family’s cabin last summer. There’s a deep retaining pond on one part of the land which is basically a ten foot deep whole filled with water. Our dog had been there literally 5 minutes and he managed to fall in. My fiance had to throw himself down a hill to pull him out. He had the same look on his face Murphy has in those pictures.
You guys are one of the cutest blog families ever! Your family stories make me smile every time!
Oh no! Poor Murphy! My pup jumped in a lake once after her best dog friend did. She was totally displeased and that NEVER happened again! ๐
Murphy always keeps things interesting, doesn’t he!
