Brussels Sprouts Get a Bad Rap

Am I right? Brussels sprouts get such a bad rap!

From the time that we are little kids, I think we are programmed to think brussels sprouts are “gross.” I know I didn’t want to eat them! I’m sure my response was something like: “Brussels spouts?! Ewww, gross!” But, I’ve come along way since then. Brussels sprouts, especially roasted, are one of my favorite veggies ever.


Turnips also get a bad rap, don’t they? I never liked them as a kid.


Tonight, I did something really crazy and combined the two “hated” veggies into one dish. I’m sure there are a few kids out there who are totally grossed-out right now! 😉


Thanks to some Roasted Garlic Mustard and leftover pesto, my brussels sprouts + turnip experiment turned out really well.


Roasted Brussels Sprouts and Turnip


  • 10 ounces brussels sprouts
  • 1 medium turnip
  • 1/4 cup roasted garlic mustard (or other variety)
  • 2 tbsp pesto
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp canola oil
  • S + P


  • Preheat oven to 375* F
  • Slice brussels sprouts in half and cut turnip into bite-size pieces


  • Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl




  • Spread brussels sprouts and turnip on a baking sheet


  • Bake for 35-40 minutes
  • Allow to cool before serving



Mmm! Roasted veggies are the best– even brussels sprouts and turnips! 😉


With the roasted veggies, I also had a piece of toasted whole wheat bread with Pulled BBQ Shreds on top. It was a good dinner tonight!


For “dessert,” I ate a million gum drops. I forgot how much I like these things!



After dinner, Mal and I headed to Body Pump with our friends Dave and Marie. It’s so nice having friends to workout with. Of course, it’s great motivation, but it’s also fun to catch up before and after class.

Body Pump was sooooo tough tonight! We did BP 72 in its entirety and the lunge track totally kicked my butt! I actually felt lightheaded halfway through the track, which has never happened to me. Maybe my mini Body Pump hiatus last week is now affecting me?

In the end, I made it through class just fine. My legs are totally exhausted now, but in a I-worked-really-hard way. Let’s just say that I am going to sleep like a baby tonight!


Mal and I just turned on American Idol and we’re sipping some chocolate protein shakes. I made mine with non-fat milk and a bunch of ice cubes. It’s exactly what I need after this evening’s butt-kicking workout.

  1. I had roasted brussel sprouts last night for dinner as well! They are by far one of my favorite veggies! My husband, however, is still programmed to say “ew, gross” or “you’re making the house stink!” when I cook them 🙂

  2. Try this yummy Brussel Sprout soup – low fat and delicous
    Brussel Sprout Soup

    1 medium onion – chopped
    1 medium potato – cubed
    2 T butter
    1lb fresh or frozen brussel sprouts cut in half (I use fresh)
    3 C low sodium chicken broth
    ¼ C milk

    Saute onion, potato, and butter in saucepan until onion is tender. Add brussel sprouts and chicken broth, bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer for 10-12 mins. Puree in small batches add milk. Salt and pepper to taste.

  3. Hi, new reader here — love your blog! We love roasted brussels sprouts (and any other vegetable for that matter). Great w/ multi grain pasta and some shaved parmesan and nuts.

    Just an observation, but it seems as though you had a lot of sugar yesterday, so maybe affected your Body Pump session?

  4. I feel like people think brussel sprouts are gross because they haven’t tried them ROASTED! Roasting them gives that nice caramelized flavor that just rocks… what’s not to like?
    My mom always made steamed b-sprouts when I was a kid, and I hated em!

  5. Brussel Sprouts are the BEST. Boiled, Roasted, Pan seared, cooked in duck fat (how I ate them at Craigie on Main). Yours look delish.
    They do get a bad wrap. I think the majority of us bloggers out there are changing that! (I have read so many posts where people have said b. sprouts are hands down their fave veggies.) I agree!

  6. To make brussel sprouts kind of “treat-y”, I’ve taken just smidge of maple syrup to them—after roasting–and for a big holiday like Thanksgiving or Christmas–added a bit of bacon to the mix. Yummy.

  7. I love brussel sprouts too! I only tried them for the first time last year because of their “bad rap!” I usually roast them with some olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic. I’ve only had mashed turnips, which I like; I’ll have to try them roasted too!

  8. you could not be more right about brussel sprouts! a friend of mine has been trying to sell me on brussel sprouts for months and i finally broke down and cheffed some up the other evening. (my negative childhood thoughts were keeping me from satisfying my tastebuds) i was pleasantly SUR-PRISED. new favorite veg!

  9. I tried Body Pump for the first time a couple of weeks ago and the lunge track kicked my butt as well! After we switched legs and were lunging on the second one I think my whole body was vibrating just trying to complete them! haha

    I think you’re right, brussel sprouts are given a bad rap but they are pretty good! Roasted veggies are always delicious!

  10. I was always one of those weird kids that LIKED brussels sprouts. And still do! Haven’t tried them roasted yet, which I definitely need to do. 🙂 (P.S. I LOVE Stonewall Kitchen products.)

  11. I loved brussel sprouts as a kid until my mum stopped letting me have fun eating them by pulling off each leaf one by one 😛 I’m firmly back on the brussel bandwagon now, though!
