Breakfast Alternatives and A Big Grocery Shopping

I slept great last night! 😀  I stayed up to watch Lost, so I slept in until 6:15 this morning. (Man, I remember the days when “sleeping in” was noon!) I slept soundly until my alarm went off and easily got out of bed. I feel like I haven’t had a morning like this in weeks! 

My breakfast was a delightful bowl of stovetop oats. Guys, I think I am a true convert! The stovetop method really doesn’t take that much longer to make, and the final product is oat perfection

In the mix:

  • 1/2 cup dry oats
  • 3/4 cup vanilla hemp milk
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp hemp protein
  • 1 tbsp raisins
  • Blueberries
  • Scoop of peanut butter 

While I find oatmeal to be the best, most filling, long-lasting breakfast, I want to change-up my morning meal a little bit. Besides oats, what breakfasts fill you up and hold off your hunger until lunchtime? 

Lunch Preview

I can’t decide which I like better– posting lunch at the end of the day with dinner or posting a “lunch preview” with breakfast?

Today’s lunch is leftover pizza from last night, cottage cheese with fresh blueberries, and a lemon-flavored Larabar, which is my new fav! (I need to update my rankings!) 

Big Grocery Shopping

When I went grocery shopping this past weekend, we needed everything! Seriously, our refrigerator and cupboards were bare! This shopping was bigger than usual, but a lot of these foods are the “usuals” that we buy most weeks. If you’d like to see past grocery shopping trips, check them out here

Question of the Day

Have you ever been served breakfast in bed? If so, what was the occasion and what did you eat? 



  1. Hey Tina! Besides oatmeal I find that oat bran, and other whole grain hot cereal really keep me full, although they are pretty similar to old fashioned oats. I always crave cereal but it never ever keeps me satisfied. Sometimes I switch it up though and make a toasted english muffin with pb and jelly, along with some banana and 1/2 cup of egg whites…I think the protein from the egg whites and pb keeps me full for a while. Breakfast in bed, I don’t even remember when I had that last! although I do make it for my mom every so often on a sunday or special holiday 🙂 French toast or pancakes 🙂

  2. Oatmeal is definitely the best way to fill me up, but have you tried it in “cookie” form? Seriously, even with all the same ingredients as regular oatmeal, it sits like a BRICK in my stomach, it’s so satisfying, and it keeps me fueled WAY longer than eating oats traditionally! And the flavors and textures are incredible!

  3. I was served breakfast in bed the morning after my wedding and was the perfect start to the first day as husband and wife!

  4. Wasn’t lost so good? I love that show so much 🙂 Your post reminds me that I need to get back to focusing on sleep! We didn’t end up in bed until 11:30ish and I get up at 5:15! Great shopping trip. lots of fresh, healthy stuff!

  5. my fav most filling breakfasts are either cottage cheese fiber 1 and blueberries or fage yogurt, fiber 1 or all bran extra and blueberries strawberries-etc addd any fruit-i like frozen no sugar added fruit-the consistency of the mix leaves my mouth satisfied too

  6. Lost = I’M beyond lost with the plot by now, haha 😉

    I ALWAYS eat oatmeal (with loads of nut-butter or seed-butter) and a protein shake for breakfast – keeps me going until 2:00pm!!


  7. i think omelettes are really filling!! also i second alyssa on the bfast oat cookie method.. easy and to die for.

  8. the husband brings me breakfast in bed for my birthday and I LOVE IT. it’s the one day out of the year he wakes up before me… i love him so much (sorry for the sappy moment).


  9. Have you tried oatbran, Tina? I know it’s pretty much the same type of breakfast as oatmeal, but there’s more fibre in it and keeps full for a lot longer – even when I use less oatbran than oatmeal. And it’s really, really good.

Great minds think alike – I asked a similar question yesterday about breakfasts other than oatmeal 🙂 When I don’t have oats for bfast, I love wafflewiches – 2 whole grain waffles sandwiching nut butter, jam or pumpkin butter or apple butter, & sliced banana. The whole grain + nut butter does a good job of holing me over, and they are so much fun to eat.

  11. TINA< you should totalllyyy try a breakfast cookie from fitnessista! they are sooo good, & JUST as filling as oats b.c they are with all the same ingredients, just cooled overnight flattened out to look like a cookie! please try it!

    cold cereal with flax & lots of fruit can also be filling. Kath had some yogurt crunch yesterday for her bfast and it looked soooo filling!

  12. great grocery loot! i bought boars head bbq chicken this week, too….i had it in a pita with spinach, avocado, swiss, and red pepper yesterday…yum 🙂

    haven’t found another breakfast that fills me up like oatmeal yet. your oats look delicious this morning!

  13. 1 1/4 c. kashi go lean crunch, 1/2 c. milk and 1/2 c. blueberries usually keeps me going pretty long. Or two slices of whole wheat toast with pb and sliced bananas. My fave!!

    And no breakfast in bed. Well maybe my mom when I was little, but I’m not sure that counts!

  14. I agree – stovetop oats are way superior!
    My breakfast of choice is a greek yogurt with lots of addins (like you would in for oatmeal – nuts, cereal, fruit).
    No breakfast in bed for me…. or at least it wasn’t memorable 🙂

  15. Tina, lately I have been going with a combination of go lean crunch and bran buds topped with sliced strawberries and blueberries and some skim milk. I love it!

  16. I find that a good egg and toast/english muffin combo can be very filling. You just need to get a good amount of fiber and protein.

  17. I’ve never had breakfast in bed before. I’d be worried about my nice sheets. 🙂 For a filling breakfast, I toast 2 Kashi Go Lean or Vans waffles, put sugar free strawberry jelly on one side and 2 tbsp Barney Butter on the other side and eat it like a sandwich. So good!

  18. I’ve recently fallen in love with oatbran (and I see several other readers are enjoying it as well). It has the texture of cream of wheat, and I mix about hald oatmeal, half oat bran to still have the chew factor, and the grainy oat texture. I’ve actually eaten it for breakfast and dinner a couple of times this week, it’s that good!

  19. 1. Breakfasts

    Eggs, English muffins with pb, yogurt medleys, smoothies with a side of a single piece of toast. that’s about it from me.

    2. Breakfast in bed? Yes, by PB recently, and my mom when I was little!

  20. Stovetop oats really don’t take long at all – esp. because they are hands off! It takes me longer to assemble a bowl of cereal 🙂

    I think it’s funny than northerners say “cupboards”. We call them cabinets!

  21. Lately I’ve switched up my everyday oats and have been having egg beaters on an english muffin with some diced tomatoes and spinach. I was so surprised how long it kept me full! As for breakfast in bed, my Dad used to serve it to me a lot when I was younger and it was always pancakes, waffles, or french toast. Those were the days!

  22. Does my mom bringing me soup or something when I was sick count? If not…no. But now I know what I’m requesting of my boyfriend for my birthday…so I’m sure he thanks you for that 🙂

  23. i dont think i’ve ever had breakfast in bed but i think its about darn time! i get up way earlier than my hubby so i’d have to make it and hop back in bed to eat it. kinda defeats the purpose…

  24. I used to be a die hard 1 egg, 2 egg whites kinda girl plus some carbs, but lately I just love a warm bowl of oatmeal without the eggs. I made your spaghetti squash pancakes last night!! I will post pics later…they take a while but are good! 🙂

    No breakfast in bed yet, but I think I need it now!

    My breakfast staples are oatmeal or eggs – I love them both, and they both hold me well.

    If you still have blueberries left try this with your stovetop oatmeal -heat them in micro at med high about 65 sec or so ,so that when you add them to your oatmeal the blueberries have a lot of delish warm liquid of “blueberry sauce” along with blueberries.The warmth and sauciness is soooooo yummmy-tastes like a blueberry “sunda” oatmeal(and of course a spoonful of crucnhy pb on side!)

  27. PS ooops that micro time for blueberries was based on my FROZEN blueberries(not fresh!)so less time in micro than I mentioned!!!!

  28. Tina, I have always wanted to try Steel Cut Oats. But with getting myself and 2 boys ready for school, I never had the time. But I found a way to fix them overnight in a crockpot and they were DELISH! I was so excited!

  29. I appreciate you taking the time to lay out all of your groceries for us to see! I feel like I need to go to three different grocery stores to get everything that I want (TJ’s, Whole Foods, Stop and Shop).

    I have had breakfast in bed – it was when my boyfriend and I were celebrating our two year anniversary, and we spent the weekend in NH. Room service is the best thing ever!

  30. My other half served me breakfast in bed as a surprise a few weeks ago. I had a delicious meal of creamy coconut greek yogurt, fresh pienapple slices and peach juice. It was a taste of paradise!

  31. That grocery haul was amazing! LOST was wonderful as usual 🙂 I’ve never been served breakfast in bed unfortunately!

  32. The most filling breakfast for me seems to be banana custard oat bran which is 1/4 cup oat bran, 1 cup milk, pinch salad, a small banana cooked in the microwave. Once it is done, I stir in a beaten egg plus 1/4 cup water and cook for 30 ore seconds. I typically top it with chocolate chips. This combo lasts me for hours.

  33. Besides oats, bagels really hold me over well. Thomas’s multi grain or pepridge farm whole wheat. Thomas’s has 10g of protien and 240 calories, and pepridge farms has 11g of protien and 250 calories. I usually top it with whipped cream cheese and sugar-free jelly, but I find that a tbs of PB (or my new purchase – barney butter) ups the protien thus making it more sustantial 🙂
    I don’t know what time you eat lunch and breakfast but it can hold me over for the 4 hours or so inbetween.

    I’ve never had breakfast in bed 🙁 I’m not sure if I’d like eating in bed though…crumbs gross me out.

    Never had breakfast in bed..that I can remember, unless my mom did it when I was younger…she’s nice like that.

    i’ve never had breakfast in bed but if my bf did it for me, i’d probably be the type of person to get up and bring it to the dining table…

  36. I recently discovered OATBRAN! I was becoming hungry just a 2 – 2.5 hours after breakfast (regular oatmeal with banana), but I switched to oatbran and added a small spoonful of peanut butter. I throw in a banana, flax seed meal, and some other random fruit, and I’m good for about 3.5 hours! It’s so delicious and creamy!

  37. I actually find oats to be one of those foods where I’m hungry again in 2 hours. I like to have an egg sandwich – usually 1/2 cup egg beaters on some sort of ww bread or bun with a slice of cheese.

  38. I wish I could say I experiment more wiht breakfasts that fill me up, but oatmeal is the fastest and easiest stuff I’ve ever made. For brunch though, I LOVE eggs benedict with smoked salmon and fruit on the side. That reaally hits the spot and leaves me satisfied. 🙂 I have yet to try oatbran and wheatbran. 😛 That stuff scares me for now. hahaha

    I HAVE been served breakfast in bed..sort of, I ended up making us move to the table because I hate getting bed sheets dirty! This was a random weekend last year when i was still living in the dorms, my bf bought us lox and bagels!
