Boo Winter {Weekend Recap}

Good morning! Happy Monday!

Some random tidbits for the morning:

  • FREE CANDY! You can get a package of M&Ms or a Snickers (or any “Mars chocolate single”) for FREE at CVS this week with your ExtraCare card! Hey, I’m excited. I have a special love affair with peanut M&Ms.
  • The Harvest Your Bundle Sale ends tonight at midnight! Hop on it to get some amazing health and wellness resources for just $39!
  • I posted the challenge for week 2 of the Get Healthy, Stay Health Challenge! It’s all about getting your sweat on this week, and my post includes a bunch of fun workouts! Check it out!
  • Please ”˜like’ Carrots ”˜N’ Cake on Facebook! Did you know CNC is on Facebook? My page is relatively new, and it would love some love from ya!
  • Dogs are so smart! Just wanted to share this article: Dogs do doo-duty in alignment with Earth’s magnetic field.

So how was your weekend? Mine was relatively low-key. We got a pretty big snow storm late in the week, so I wasn’t super motivated to leave my house, except for a couple of special occasions. (Winter, snow, and I generally don’t get along.)

Murphy and I kept ourselves entertained with pug Glamour Shots.

On Saturday morning, I managed to rally, but barely. ONE degree?! Really?

But CrossFitters are crazy people, so off to 781 I went!

I loved this WOD! Well, actually “loved” is a more accurate description. This one hurt, but in a “good” way and once it was all over, of course.

21-5-9 of these three movements isn’t so bad, but when you do them for 20 minutes straight, they become quite challenging. I did the workout as prescribed, and I was actually a little worried about the 75-pound power cleans, but they ended up being the “easiest” part of the workout. The over-the-bar-Burpees where brutal. I felt like I spent half the workout just doing those! And now that I have a baby belly forming, I do them a lot slower and lower myself down to the ground, so my arms were especially smoked by the end of this workout. Even still, great WOD. I finished 5 + 9 Rx.

You know you’re from New England when”¦

After CrossFit, I had a serious craving for pancakes, so I whipped up a big batch with (defrosted frozen) blueberries and, oh my goodness, they were delicious. I wish I had snapped a photo before I demolished them! Here’s the recipe in case you’re interested!

Gluten-Free Blueberry Pancakes

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup almond meal/flour
  • 1 cup gluten-free rolled oats
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1.5 cup almond milk
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 cup blueberries + more for topping

Directions:

  1. Combine all ingredients, except for blueberries, in a large bowl and mix well. Once batter is smooth, stir in blueberries.
  2. On a prepared griddle on medium/high heat, use a 1/4 cup to portion batter and pour onto griddle. Cook each side for 2-3 minutes until lightly browned.
  3. Top with maple syrup and fresh blueberries.

Serves 2-3 (1 Mal serving + 2 Tina servings)

I spent the rest of Saturday afternoon cleaning the house while Mal ran errands. When it’s cold and snowy outside, I’d much rather stay home than venture out, so I offered to clean the house from top to bottom while Mal went grocery shopping and picked up a few things at Lowe’s. (The house projects never end!)

On Saturday night, we had a few friends over for football, snacks, and drinks. I honestly can’t remember what game we watched, but it was a lot of fun hanging out with everyone and chowing down on delicious appetizers.

Murphy had an especially nice time and passed out even before the game ended.

Yesterday, I went to my friend Beth’s baby shower, which was so nice. It was Winnie the Pooh-themed and absolutely adorable!

Question of the Day

What’s your relationship with snow and winter? Love it? Hate it? Love it through December and then hate it until early April?

  1. Started liking the cold/snow now that I am in my mid 40’s. Can’t stand the heat anymore. It’s nice that I can work from home and don’t have to go out in it. That helps too! I totally get if people hate to clean it up and have to go to work in it.

  2. My thoughts on winter are I love snow and think it makes everything look like a magical winter wonderland, up until Christmas. After that I would like to skip to summer weather, having cold snowy storms in January just adds to the fact that January feels like one big Monday! Sounds like you had a nice weekend though:)

  3. How adorable is that baby shower!! I love it! my relationship with winter goes something like this: either get me off work via snow days or don’t bother. Haha, I hate driving in the snow , freezing rain, ice, all of it- even though I have a Subaru.

  4. I am not a fan of Winter – mostly because I am terrified of driving in the snow. Wy I live in Wisconsin, I do not know! 🙂

The cold is pretty ridiculous today (high of -11!) but that’s pretty unusual. The wind is making it even colder and I think I’ll be frozen walking across the parking lot to get into work today. But generally, I’m OK with the cold. It’s more the snow on the roads and the feeling of being locked inside. I’m already counting down until April!

  5. I hate winter… and I hate summer… I keep trying to get my other half to move to CA but he’s not a fan… it’s not has bad here in southern MD as it is up where you’re at.. but I still hate it.

  6. Ah I was at CVS yesterday and used my card but didn’t know I could get M&Ms for free! Might be making another trip back there 😉 We are getting the nasty cold weather today and I am not ready for it! I do like how pretty snow is, and generally don’t worry about driving in it.

  7. YUM! I was hoping to make pancakes this morning but when I woke up this morning, I really didn’t feel like taking the time. I was cold and just wanted to sit down, cuddle up under a blanket and drink some hot coffee. It’s -11 right now in Chicago (with a windchill of -40!) and it’s supposed to keep getting colder. Brrr!

  8. Love snow and winter. If it is going to be this cold there better be some snow on the ground to play in. Also, love to skate on a frozen pond. This actually doesn’t happen much her in Columbus, OH so it is a special treat when it does.

  9. Mmm I’m a big peanut M&M fan too! Off to CVS I go!

I totally feel ya on the snow/winter thing. I’m a Phoenician through and through! I honestly never thought I’d live in a place that snows. I guess love will do that to ya. 😉 I don’t mind the snow through Christmas, and then I’m more than ready for SUMMER!

  10. I used to be more indifferent to winter. I don’t love it but I live in MN, it’s what happens. But the older I get the less I like it. Snowy days means sitting in traffic for 2 hours each way to and from work. And this morning it’s -21 below without the windchill, I really don’t see that as necessary. Now if I could just stay home on the extreme cold days or snowy days, I would be back to indifferent 🙂

  11. I just kind of suck it up because I know it’s not going to be warm for months. I have all the gear to stay warm so that’s a plus. But this cold snap where it’s dangerous to even go outside – that’s a bit much.

  12. Ugh! I hate the winter and snow. Since we moved up to the coldest place in PA 3 years ago we have only had 1-2 real bad winters. This winter is AWFUL! We are currently getting a full on blizzard for the next 3 days and I am determined to not let it get me down and stay moving! I spend a lot of time inside so the key for winter and blizzards for me is to find a way to get out – go to a coffee place to work, go to the gym, just don’t sit at home and get the “winter blues!”

  13. I am in VA/DC but from Ohio so I am used to snow/winter. I never stop wearing flip flops until the first snowflake drops! Come January, I am over the snow and the cold! Especially after the holidays when all the decorations are down. It is just so gloomy and after a while, I get so tired of putting on layers! I want my flip flops back!

  14. That’s a lot of snow! The high here in upstate NY was -2 over the weekend. I like the snow, but that is just too cold!

Besides ketchup, my other major pregnancy craving is Peanut M&Ms. Totally obsessed. I suppose they are “better” for you than plain M&Ms?

  15. I really don’t do well with the cold and snow. And I live in Minnesota, so this is a problem!! We had windchills in the -40s last night and our high today (air temp, not including windchill!!) is -14. Yuck. Summer, please come quickly!!!

  16. I don’t mind the snow/cold through the end of January but then it can go away! I’m working from home today but am not looking forward to taking the dog out later… it feels like -45 here in Chicago. Stay warm, Tina!

  17. I hate the snow…I love that the kids enjoy it but one day is enough. Ireland goes on shut down when we get even a small amount of snow. You pretty much have to walk (or attempt to) walk everywhere! Those pancakes sound incredible! I’m loving making pancakes with eggs!

  18. ahh your snowy pictures make me homesick! i grew up in MA and now I live in Virginia and I would do anything for a little blizzard time! But I would prefer something brief hah

  19. Tina, are you enjoying your new Suby in the snow? I might be your only car-loving reader but would love to read a review on it if you’d be interested in writing one 🙂 I rented the Outback recently on vacation and fell in love with it!

  20. REALLY, REALLY don’t like winter! It snowed 4 inches in Kansas City yesterday and was -6 when we got up this morning. Wind chills -20 to -30. Schools are cancelled. YUCK!!

  21. Hey Tina quick question about MyFitnessPal. I downloaded the app but how do you enter in and account for homemade foods like a smoothie? I made a pear/spinach/coconut water smoothie but it seems like the only way to enter foods is either have a brand name or search for food in database and my smoothie was not in there. Same goes for if I make a paleo egg frittata or some other random homemade thrown-together meal- how you do you enter that and track it using MyFitnessPal?

    Thanks!

    Renee

  22. I kinda hate it always, but it’s worst after Dec!!! Thankfully, in CO, we typically get only a few “bad” days of weather in a row before hitting the forties or fifties. 🙂

  23. Love love LOVE the snow! I would never have said that my first 26 years of life in Minnesota, but relocating to CT where any snow melts a maximum of 3 days after its arrival has made me miss it. I might have been caught making snow angels in our driveway during last Thursday night’s snowfall…

  24. Growing up in MN made me really not care much for snow, many VERY cold and snowy winters. Now living in CO winters aren’t as bad, but I would take a nice dusting of snow for the week of Christmas-New Years. Then, have it move right into spring.

  25. I LOVE winter!! However, I have to preface that with saying I live in Arizona, so it’s usually about 60-70 degrees during the day. I have only been in the snow once or twice, and it was beautiful, but I am a big fat baby when it comes to being cold, so I don’t think I could live in it!

  26. I grew up in northern Michigan, but still don’t care for the snow. It certainly is pretty, but I hate being cold and trapped inside. So come the spring, this chick is ready to party!

  27. I was just in Chicago for two weeks (so I got the first half the storm you guys have now) and by the end of it I was beyond ready to be back in LA. I occasionally miss the snow but after 2-3 days I’m ready for sunshine again.

  28. I DO NOT do winter! I lived in Northwestern Ohio for the last 31 years & in December I moved to a suburb of the Raleigh/Durham area in North Carolina. I am SOOOOO glad I did since this is turning out to be an awful winter up north. I am used to an average of 30″ of snow in the winter & am loving the idea of less than 5 down here. 😀

  29. Winter is all a hate relationship for me. Although, I would take -37 below zero as it is this morning here, before i would take an inch of snow. Snow is the worse, it takes so long to melt and disappear. The cold can only last so long and then subsides.
I am patiently awaiting summer, or at least trying to be patient:)
