Remember when I met Chrissy and took her Secret Physique Barre class a couple of months ago? Well, we made plans to meet up for dinner and beers last night. I originally suggested the Union Brewhouse because of their amazing selection, but then Chrissy suggested Hingham Beer Works since we could sit outside. This was a MUCH better idea. The weather was absolutely gorgeous last night””it was basically a picture-perfect summer evening””so I’m glad we were able to enjoy it. Oh, yea, and drink good beers together!

Mal and I arrived at Hingham Beer Works a little early, so we put our name in for an outdoor table (there was a little bit of a wait) and then grabbed a beer at the bar.

I went with the Bunker Hill Bluebeery Ale, which is golden ale made and garnished with fresh blueberries. (Yep, I’m totally obsessed with fruity beers this summer.)

A little while later, we were called for our table, which was totally worth the wait. Check out the view!

Chrissy and her husband Matt arrived just a short while later, and Mal and I instantly hit it off with them. We had a ton in common (beer, breakfast, travel) and chatted non-stop the entire night. Our poor server had to come back to our table three different times to get our dinner order because we were talking so much!

For my dinner, I ordered the Brattle Street Chicken sandwich, which came with a grilled chicken breast, spinach, Swiss cheese, and mushrooms. I also ordered sweet potato fries on the side. The sandwich was awesome””the chicken was cooked perfectly and there was a ton of cheese on it, so I was very happy. And, the sweet potato fries”¦ oh my goodness, they were amazingly delicious when dipped into the Sunshine Aioli. I have no clue what exactly was in the Sunshine Aioli, but I ended up dipping just about everything on my plate into it””even the pickles.

During dinner, Chrissy and I shared a Bunker Hill Bluebeery Ale. Love those blueberries!

After dinner, Mal and I chatted with Chrissy and Matt for quite awhile. (I’m telling ya, we had a lot in common!) We eventually said good night and headed toward our respective cars. Within five feet of our car, Mal stopped dead in his tracks and said: “We’re so close to Red Mango. Let’s go,” and then immediately started speed-walking there. He’s obsessed.

Mal and I ended the evening with a bowl of froyo with all sorts of goodies on top. My husband has the best ideas!

  1. I use mental imagery and pretend I am approaching a finish line…this always helps me remember that excited feeling and pushes me through mental blocks!!

  2. Sweet potato fries, YES PLEASE!!!! Anyway a sweet potato is prepared and I will eat it! I don’t drink beer simply cause I don’t really like it! Gasp..;) I was born and raised in Holland. Everybody and their mother drinks it over there. Not sure what happened to me…..? 🙂

  3. I power through a mental shutdown by focusing on my actual goal. Whether it be to lose those extra 5 lbs, or to complete that half marathon. It usually gets me out of that slump and starts things up again.

  4. I power through a mental shutdown by switching up my music or podcasts on my ipod to change things up and help motivate!

  5. when my mind begins to shut down, i try to focus on how my breath is powering my entire body! Sometimes i even turn off my music to just focus on the moment.

  7. My power through method is to think of how satisfied I’ll be when I finish my run! Once I’m up and going I just think about what I’m doing and how it will feel to achieve my goals!

    PS I LOVE sweet potato fries, and blueberry flavored beer?! Heaven.

  8. When the mental fatigue sets in and I think I can’t go any further, I think about how I felt at 9.5 months pregnant and couldn’t walk without pain. I vowed to never take my able bodiness for granted during that time. That usually does the trick.

  9. To power thru on a run, I try a body self check…are my legs sore? Does my heart hurt? Am I gasping for breathe? …..etc…If the answer is no try and keep going but may slow the pace.

    So I’ve read your information on dieting. I agree with you a 100% on the whole spill on diets. I was wondering if I could pick your brain for a minute. Initially starting crossfit I did the paleo challenge – lost 15lbs. I’ve kept that off but I stopped paleo, I crossfit 5-6 times a week. I want to lose another 15lbs or so. I just seem stuck, I hated the paleo diet. I know it can’t be the only weigh that people lose weight, right? I feel better than ever, but I think if I got some extra lbs off my over all performance (maybe some kipping pull-ups) would come in. So my question is, what % of people at your box actually do paleo? Going to the games and seeing it first hand, do a lot of people do paleo? Do you ever feel that you are not a 100% crossfiter for not doing paleo?

    Whoa lots of questions – sorry. Just at one of those frustrating points.

    1. Hmmm… good question. I actually don’t think that many people at my box eat Paleo (many have tried it though). I think most are like Mal and me– we mostly eat a ‘clean’ diet that is very Paleo-esque, but don’t stick to the diet 100%. And I have never once felt like less of a CrossFitter because I don’t eat that way. Haha! Basically, you don’t NEED to eat Paleo if you want to do CrossFit and/or lose weight. Just try to eat as clean as possible when you can. Hope this helps! 🙂

  11. When I’m struggling through a run I usually try to remind myself that each hard run is one run closer to a run that feels easy. And when that fails there’s always thinking about the breakfast that’s waiting at home.
