Good morning! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

So, there’s a lot of behind the scenes action happening in Carrots ‘N’ Cake world lately. Obviously, I am working away on my book edits, but I’m also preparing for CNC 2.0! ๐Ÿ˜€ In the next couple of weeks, Carrots ‘N’ Cake is getting a complete facelift. I know Murphy is excited! ๐Ÿ˜‰

In the past 2.5 years, I’ve written nearly 2,500 posts. Crazy, right? Well, if you’ve ever tried to find an old post on CNC, it’s nearly impossible. I can’t even find my old posts sometimes! So, for the past month or so, I’ve been organizing my posts using tags and categories (check them out on the lower left-hand side of my blog). Hopefully, this will make Carrots ‘N’ Cake much easier to navigate.

Last night, I spent a good hour tagging blog posts from when I worked at Harvard, which brought back so many memories. It’s funny because I was so miserable during this time of my life, but I have such fond memories of working for the Dean and her Chief of Staff and spending time in Harvard Yard.

Anyway, since I did all of the work, I thought you guys might want to see some of my old posts. So, here’s how I spent my time while working at Harvard:

Breakfast

It’s official: overnight oats are my favorite breakfast ever. Well, besides cupcakes! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Overnight oats are even more delicious in a nearly-empty Barney Butter jar with pearl barley thrown into the mix. I love the chewy texture of the barley and, of course, the Barney Butter was yummy. (FYI: I cooked the barley before adding to my overnight oats.)

In the mix:

  • 1/3 cup pearl barley
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup vanilla soy milk
  • Walnuts
  • Barney Butter

I also enjoyed a delicious new coffee flavor this morning: Toast Coconut! Holy yum! The coffee grinds smelled amazing. I couldn’t help but stick my nose right in the bag to get a good whiff! ๐Ÿ˜‰

A slash of vanilla soy milk pretty much perfected the sweet coconut flavor. Mmm!

Question of the Day

Sort of random this morning, but I thought it might inspire some funny stories! We all need a good laugh on Monday morning, right? ๐Ÿ˜‰

What’s the most unusual gift you have ever received?

  1. Soap on a rope from my sister. She’s only 4 years older than I am and I think she was 31 when she gave it to me! Just an odd thing to get from here more than odd in general. We did put it to use though!

Can’t wait to see the new CNC2.0!

  2. The most unusual gift I’ve ever received was easily a fart sound machine from my Uncle. My family actually had a blast playing with it and pulling pranks on each other over one particularly memorable camping trip in Yosemite. Haha.

Looking forward to seeing the changes you implement on CNC!

Also, does pearl barley have a similar texture to wheat berries?

  3. My last name is beaver, so I get quite an array of unusual gifts. People think it is funny to give my husband and i anything that has beavers on it. So far this has included as necklace, tie, mug, signs., . . It is funny but weird because what do you do with a bunch of beaver paraphernalia?

  4. A boy that I was dating once bought me a globe for christmas. The kind that you see in a 5th grade classroom. It made for a very awkwardโ€ยฆ”I love it!โ€ย conversation.

  5. When I was in high school I worked for a deli / smoothie shop. I ended up getting fired (for basically being a lazy good-for-nothing) by my jerk of a boss. My friend – a co-worker at the same deli – drove over to console me and gave me a cactus as a present. We named the cactus “Jeff”, after my a-hole boss!
That was 12 years ago, and I still have the cactus.

  6. LOL.. The most odd gift was 1/2 of a package of socks.. My mum got the other 1/2… HAHA.. Her MIL gave them to us.
P.S. Tina, I know this isn’t the blog you asked about what improvement should happen to CNC.. But I just thought of it.. Would it be possible to make the links open in another page.. Sometimes I click on the link to see what you are referring to then I have to click the back button or I get lost on another page and don’t make it back to yours.. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  7. Hello! I am new to making comments and blogging and such, but I read your blog everyday! Anyways my husband, while we were dating, once got me a king size pack of Reese’s peanut butter cups, whited out the “king” and wrote in “princess”. Sappy, I know..but I thought it was sweet…and unusual ๐Ÿ˜‰

  8. Oooh, this is an easy one for me. My MIL, who is constantly harping at me about the 5-10 lbs I could stand to lose, sent me weight loss soap from an infomercial and a picture of a giant pig custom-printed to say “Ellie, stick to your diet!”. Needless to say, she’s a complete whackjob.

  9. Wow, what a difference a year can make, right!? So happy YOU are happier now ๐Ÿ™‚

My grandma gives me flannel sheets EVERY year for Christmas. I’m not even kidding. One or two sets…cool, but EVERY year since I was in high school. I’m 27 now. ha!!

  10. Last Christmas, my mom bought this kazoo set for my family. Each kazoo played a different note and had a number on it. It came with a song book and you had to follow along with the numbers…it was really random but actually a lot of fun!

  11. The first time I got married, my aunt dory sent me a recipe book that she found at a yard sale. It had been published in the 1950s. It was really unusal, but also very fun, because it was like getting an antique. Plus, we laughed about it for a long time. ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. When I was ten years old, my grandmother gave me a red nightgown that said “Sexy” on it. I am pretty sure it was gifted to me BEFORE she had cataract eye surgery. LOL.

  13. My grandma gave me a VERY ugly umbrella with cats on it as a Confirmation gift! You know how you always leave an umbrella somewhere and forget it when it stops raining. Not this one! I once left it on a river boat for a whole year and found it the next time I road! Sadly the umbrella stem broke last year so I no longer use it.

  14. I just got some peanutbutter cup coffee when I went to visit family in OHIO. Wow, that stuff is soooo good. I pair it up with a peanut butter vitatop too

  15. That version of overnight oats looks amazing to me, because I definitely err on the “thicker” side when it comes to my oatmeal. Which is why I usually use oatbran – it gets far firmer and denser than gloopy plain oats ๐Ÿ˜›

  16. For one Easter, we all got polished stone peperweights in the shape of an egg from my husband’s aunt and uncle. Everyone was like “oh, gee, thanks”, but it turns out it’s one of the greatest things ever. I use it as a foot massager at my office, since heels eventually make my feet want to fall off. =)

  17. Not sure about unusual, as far as gifts go, but certainly a bit bizarre, was a table tennis table from my father, a number of years ago.

The thing that’s weird about it was that our house is tiny, the table wouldn’t even unfold in our biggest room!

We ended up leaving it in his outhouse and using it a handful of times ๐Ÿ™

As far as I remember, it was still there when he moved, 5 or so years later….
