Yesterday ended up being a much busier day than expected!

I had an appointment at the Boston Running Center, so I drove into the city to meet with my new coach. (Our meeting went really well! More on that later!) Our appointed ended up going longer than I planned, so I needed to rush to my second meeting of the day.

I met Megan, a local CNC reader, at Starbucks to chat about blogging and writing. We talked for about an hour before she needed to leave. I brought my laptop, so I hung out at Starbucks and did about 30 minutes of work.

Then, I did a quick outfit change in the Starbuck’s bathroom (classy) and headed to my final meeting of the day.

The Lower Depths!!! I’ve wanted to go there for months now!

IMG_0009 (500x375)

The Lower Depths is a tap room, located near Kenmore, that serves all sort of wonderful beers. Their selection was mostly local, but they had plenty of domestic and international brews too.

The food menu at The Lower Depths was also pretty decent, offering a variety of sandwiches, salads, burgers, tater tots, and hot dogs.

FYI: The Lower Depths is a cash-only establishment. Make sure you hit up an ATM before you go!

IMG_0015 (500x375)

The reason for my visit to the The Lower Depths was a special Smuttynose event. I [heart] Smuttynose!

IMG_0012 (375x500)

I arrived about 15 minutes before my dates, so I ordered a BBC Coffeehouse Porter and a glass of water while I waited.

A little while later, my new internet friends, Stephanie and Casey, arrived. I met them last week at the Cookie CAREavan, and we talked about beer, so a beer event seemed like the perfect second date for us.

To eat, I ordered the Hummus Plate, which was served with garlic hummus (<— really good), pita chips, broccoli, carrots, and celery.

We thought the Smuttynose event was a beer tasting, but it was actually just a featured Smuttynose night, so The Lower Depths had a bunch of newly tapped Smuttynose kegs, which patrons could pay to try. In Massachusetts, you can’t offer deals on booze, so the pints were still full price. Bummer.

But, I did get to try a new Smuttynose brew: Maibock! I loved it!

Bock beer is a broad stylistic category describing a wide range of malty, lightly-hopped German lager beers, ranging in color from light straw to dark brown, from medium to full body. Maibocks, typically released in the springtime, tend to be light in color and medium to full-bodied bodied and usually feature German “noble” hop varieties. As is the case with other traditional styles, American brewers have taken some creative liberties with bock beers, often with outstanding results.

For every Smuttynose beer that we ordered, we got a raffle ticket to win some fun prizes, but, sadly, no one at our table won anything.

Ali and her friend also met us for a couple of beers.

Good times! I’m so glad that I met some new beer buddies!

I wish it was free DD iced coffee day instead!

  9. What a fun meet up! That Coffeehouse Porter sure sounds tasty! 🙂 YAY for National Donut Day! I wish there was a Dunkin Donuts by my work. I would totally stop there today.

  10. Aaah! Maybe I’m dating myself here but do you remember back in the late 90s when that space in Kenmore Sq. that the Lower Depths is now was an awesome diner called Deli Haus? Remember their German Fries? I still can’t bring myself to eat in an establishment that took Deli Haus from me. Although your post makes it look preeeety tempting….

  11. The Lower Depths looks like a fun place! Reminds me of a place in my ‘hood. Thanks for the donut info! I just may be tempted now for one…

Speaking of garlic hummus, I made some last night and I think I could ward off vampires for months, I overdid it on the garlic 🙂

  12. Good to know The Lower Depths is cool – I’ve now been in Boston 10 years and have *never* visited! Would love to join future beer-drinking meetups 🙂

  13. I LOVE lower depths! “Upwitholives” introduced it on her blog and it drove me to try the Kenmore tots! Such a little hidden gem in Kenmore Square.

  15. I was at LD’s last night!! (but later on after Paul Simon at HOB!)
I saw their intense menu of Smuttynose! pretty cool. their food is amazing.

  16. A few things:

    1) You can’t offer deals on booze in MA? What?!?! That is crazy!
    2) At first I thought Smuttynose was a live band.
    3) Um, National Donut Day? Now this is a day I can get behind!

  17. So jealous of donut day at Dunkin Donuts–there isn’t one in my city! I might cave and buy one full price at the donut shop though. 🙂

  18. I landed in Boston this morning, Tina, and the first thing I did was head to DD (I’m a former east coaster who misses it like crazy!) to get an iced coffee–reminds me of you and your blog now! The free donut was an awesome surprise 🙂

Really hope I can go to the HLS… I’m really nervous about it, since I know no one and can’t really afford it, but we’ll see 🙂

  19. What a great day of meet ups. One of my favorite places to bring my computer to is Starbucks. I think I’m addicted… an expensive one at that! Happy Friday!

  20. I went to college in NC and they are not aloud to have “happy hour” or do drink specials either. SO WIERD. They are celebraiting donut day at my work in the cafe too, free donut with drink purchase but I just stuck with my packed breakfast.

  21. I love your love for beer! I definitely have that in common with you 🙂 My sister and best friends live in Boston, and although I live in NYC, I visit them quite a bit. Hopefully I can meet up with you to talk about health blogging one time! 🙂

  22. I went to school at UMass Amherst and could not get over the fact that happy hour is illegal in the state! But a pint at a bar in Western Mass is still considerably cheaper than one in New York, so I didn’t suffer too terribly 🙂
