Yesterday ended up being a much busier day than expected!
I had an appointment at the Boston Running Center, so I drove into the city to meet with my new coach. (Our meeting went really well! More on that later!) Our appointed ended up going longer than I planned, so I needed to rush to my second meeting of the day.
I met Megan, a local CNC reader, at Starbucks to chat about blogging and writing. We talked for about an hour before she needed to leave. I brought my laptop, so I hung out at Starbucks and did about 30 minutes of work.
Then, I did a quick outfit change in the Starbuck’s bathroom (classy) and headed to my final meeting of the day.
The Lower Depths!!! I’ve wanted to go there for months now!
The Lower Depths is a tap room, located near Kenmore, that serves all sort of wonderful beers. Their selection was mostly local, but they had plenty of domestic and international brews too.
The food menu at The Lower Depths was also pretty decent, offering a variety of sandwiches, salads, burgers, tater tots, and hot dogs.
FYI: The Lower Depths is a cash-only establishment. Make sure you hit up an ATM before you go!
The reason for my visit to the The Lower Depths was a special Smuttynose event. I [heart] Smuttynose!
I arrived about 15 minutes before my dates, so I ordered a BBC Coffeehouse Porter and a glass of water while I waited.
A little while later, my new internet friends, Stephanie and Casey, arrived. I met them last week at the Cookie CAREavan, and we talked about beer, so a beer event seemed like the perfect second date for us.
To eat, I ordered the Hummus Plate, which was served with garlic hummus (<— really good), pita chips, broccoli, carrots, and celery.
We thought the Smuttynose event was a beer tasting, but it was actually just a featured Smuttynose night, so The Lower Depths had a bunch of newly tapped Smuttynose kegs, which patrons could pay to try. In Massachusetts, you can’t offer deals on booze, so the pints were still full price. Bummer.
But, I did get to try a new Smuttynose brew: Maibock! I loved it!
Bock beer is a broad stylistic category describing a wide range of malty, lightly-hopped German lager beers, ranging in color from light straw to dark brown, from medium to full body. Maibocks, typically released in the springtime, tend to be light in color and medium to full-bodied bodied and usually feature German “noble” hop varieties. As is the case with other traditional styles, American brewers have taken some creative liberties with bock beers, often with outstanding results.
For every Smuttynose beer that we ordered, we got a raffle ticket to win some fun prizes, but, sadly, no one at our table won anything.
Ali and her friend also met us for a couple of beers.
Good times! I’m so glad that I met some new beer buddies!
