Back in 1994

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Who were you back in 1994?

I was 13-years-old about to turn fourteen. I was in the 7th grade. I played the flute. I hated math. I liked ballet, soccer, and art class. I also had an impeccable fashion sense. (Clearly, I couldn’t dress myself.)

1994 really doesn’t seem that long ago, right? Well, for Bryant Gumbel and Katie Couric, it’s been a very long time. The clip below shows the two of them trying to explain the Internet. I thought this video was hilarious and just had to share!

What is the Internet?

After breakfast, I headed to the gym for a Body Pump class. We ended up doing Body Pump 74 in its entirety instead of the new release. I know a lot people don’t like doing the old releases, but I love it! It’s like hanging out with an old friend again. Although, I forgot how damn long that squat track is! My legs were en fuego by the end! 😯

After Body Pump, I returned home and immediately reheated lunch. I was famished!

I ate leftover Asian Rice Noodle and Shrimp Soup, which tasted a zillion times better today because all of the flavors had time to soak in overnight.

After lunch, I took a little break and enjoyed a hot mug of tea and a piece of banana bread.

A little while later, I got back to work and snacked on a Granny Smith Apple.

Which I ate to the core.

And just now, I ate two halves of a toasted English muffin with almond butter spread on top… and, somehow, I could still eat.

I swear, Body Pump makes me hungrier than usual!

Bonus Question of the Day

Who were you back in 1994? What was happening in your life then?

  1. I was four. Livin’ the life, probably. Last year of preschool, so I was probably spelling things out with macaroni and such. At least I think that’s what I did in preschool…haha. I honestly can’t remember!

  2. I was 12 and always trying to sneak into AOL chatrooms and pretend I was 16: a/s/l? haha

I learned a verrrry important lesson that year too. If you are going to be gone on vacation for a week to Disney World, do NOT leave your pet hamster, Minnie Mouse, next to a window with the sun beating down on her. Poor little thing 🙁 I was devestated.

  3. Just about the same for me—I was 14 years old and in eighth grade. I was finally retiring my ugly Sally Jesse Rafael-esque glasses for contacts (whatever happened to her by the way) and was ready to go to high school!

  4. Hmm…in 1994 I was 10, obsessed with Aladdin, and really bossy! My dad used to videotape me and my sister playing and just hanging out, and he actually has my 10th birthday on tape! I watch it every time I go home. Those were the good old days… 🙂

  5. I was 4! And was an expecting big sister, my little sister would be born in Aug. of ’94.
I also started playing soccer when I was 4. I continued playing until I was 20 when I fell out of love with soccer and in love with running.
I also went on my first vacation when I was 4; Walt Disney World in Orlando FL!

  6. I was 6 years old in 1994. I loved jelly sandals, leggings with the elastic foothold thingies, and side ponytails. My fav outfit back then? multi-colored flowered leggings, an oversized t-shirt with a glittery lion on it, and a side ponytail complete with a really stylish scrunchy.

  7. I was ten, in fifth grade, and was looking forward to going to summer camp. I was really into collecting Breyer horses. The rest I try to forget…those were dark days!

    1. oh, and that vid of the today show is possibly the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time :O thanks for sharing that!

  8. Love reading what other people were doing in 94! I finished up my freshman year in highschool and started my sophomore year. I was 14. I mostly remember listening to Pearl Jam, hanging out with my best friends, and developing crushes on older boys 🙂

  9. I was 10, just got my kitten – I think I might have started wearing training bras and thought I was pretty cool! 😉

I like doing old releases too! Doing the same workout for 3-4 months waiting for the next release is boring! I like it even more when instructors mix and match from different releases…a little way-back play-back, a little new stuff – fun!

    1. I remembered something else I was doing in ’94: Rocking the layered-sock look. Did anyone else do that? Wearing two socks on both feet, scrunched down, and preferably neon-colored? Or maybe we were waaaaayy behind the times in rural Ohio….

  10. That video is priceless! It’s crazy to think how much we didn’t know back then. In 1994, I was 7 and in the 2nd grade wearing stretch pants and biker shorts and GIANT t-shirts. I wore XL shirts with puppies on them until I went to middle school…which is also when I got my first pair of jeans. It was stretch pants, skorts and biker shorts until then!!

  11. Well it looks like I am the granny of the bunch. In 1994 I was pregnant with my second (of three!) child. I was a stay at home mom taking care of a friend’s child and my nearly four year old son. I was 30 years old. Wow, time sure does fly by. Oh, and you don’t want to know what I was wearing in those days. Oy!

  12. I teach BodyPUMP 3 x per week and I am always sooo hungry for eggs, turkey, chicken, and cottage cheese. It is awesome how if we listen to our bodies, they will tell us what fuel we need 🙂 In ’94 we moved into a brand new, very nice home and my little sis was born!

  13. In 1994, I was in sixth grade. I had just switched schools and suddenly I found myself in a very, very small class, with 11 other girls and 18 boys. I was also busy developing my, uh, large breasts and womanly figure at that time, unfortunately at warp speed by comparison to the other 11 girls I was surrounded by. So that made for an awkward year…I remember lots of shoulder slouching and double sports bra-wearings to minimize those babies 😉

I believe that was also the year where I was obsessed with the movie Speed and watched it nightly with my younger sister. Fun times! Ha.

  14. I was just about to turn 8 years old (Feb. 3rd!! My birthday is your blog birthday!! Yeah I’m a nerd (or super fan??) for knowing that) and in the 2nd grade.

Unfortunately, this was also the year my parent’s got divorced. Ah well… doubt I’d have the good relationship with them that I do now if they remained in an unhappy marriage!

  15. Love the apple photo with Murphy below, so cute as he’s staring up at you!
Wow, 1994…I was in 5th grade…also played the flute, also hated math. Played lacrosse and just started liking boys. I remember a goy pushed me down on the playground and I was bleeding and we were both sent to the principals office. Someone told me later, “that’s what boys do when they like you”. lol

  16. In 1994 I was in 4th grade 🙂 I used the computer to write made up stories because I wanted to be a writer. No internet yet though in my house. So hilarious.

  17. It depends on what part of 1994 we’re talking about… I was either a sophomore or a junior in high school… I played the flute as well… I hated all physical activity… and I hated math too! I did like my band class though, and I loved my english/writing classes. I got my first drivers license that year!

  18. I was seven years old and in the first grade. My life revolved around baton twirling and Under the Umbrella Tree. In my class I was the best at math and the third best at reading, because I was only /half/ Chinese and the full-blooded ones had parents who pushed them even harder. I spent at least an hour every day asking my parents for a cat.

  19. I was 11 and life was probably good. Young enough to be ignorant, but old enough to be self sufficient. I have no actual memories though, I don’t even remember what grade I would have been in…6th? 5th? Yeah, no clue.

  20. That video was hilarious!!!! In 1994 I was a sophomore/junior in high school. I was pretty much busy going to school and writing pages and pages of notes to my friends that we would pass to each other between class. I sometimes wonder how I was able to write so much when we saw each other all the time… I find it hard to write that much now!

  21. Too funny!! I was prego with Joker #1, now he’s in Drivers Training–WOW. You were a baby! lol, Love the pictures of your dog and your everyday life. I look forward to you each day! Thanks for the laughs and the walk down memory lane…. I LOVED watching Katie back then. I’m still an addict to the Today Show!

  22. 1994 was the year I turned 18. I went clubbing a lot (I’m from Quebec, the legal age is 18 here) and made a ton of friends. It’s also the year I discovered the Internet and I chatted away on MIRC a lot. It’s also the year I started working full time. Lots of stuff happening back then. 🙂

  23. I was 10 in ’94. Going into 4th grade. I had just moved to a new town in MA a year before and still getting to know people. I played the recorder and the piano. And I just got my second pet, a guinea pig named Teddy. 🙂

  24. I was 18! Graduated high school, went to college 6 hours away and being introduced to the internet and e-mail for the first time. (And happy to say that I picked up on what it was much more quickly than Katie Couric did!)

  25. I have to agree with Kel – feeling VERY old reading these! I was 28 at the time and just starting a new job (IT Department – yes I knew what the internet was! LOL )

  26. Haha, I was 13 in 1994 too! I was going through a “grunge” phase. Kurt Cobain was a god, my awesome Gavin Rossdale shirt was the coolest thing ever…and my AOL screen name was “SnoFlakLa” 🙂

Ahh, I can still remember the disappointment I felt when I didn’t have mail.

  27. OMG, I feel old….. I was 24, 3 years into married life and in Hawaii!! We took a 3 week vacation to Hawaii that year. Seriously, you just made me feel old!!!

  28. Hilarious video!

In 1994, I was 9 years old, wearing scrunchies and leggings and in the 4th grade loving school! And playing lots of soccer and games outside with my sisters and friends. Those were the days…

  29. I turned 18 in 1994. I was a still very awkward high school student with big permed hair. Yikes, I’m glad I don’t have to relive those days.
