I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.


An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

I saw an interview with Anna Faris in the April issue of Health, and I really liked the questions asked, so I decided to turn it into a survey on CNC. We all love blog surveys, right? Feel free to play along in the comment section below!

Can you eat what you want or do you have to watch it?

Right now, I’m training for a marathon, so I can pretty much eat what I want on the days that I run a lot.

After you had a baby, did you feel pressure to snap back into shape?

I didn’t feel pressure, but I wanted to get back in shape. I missed being able to exercise like I did pre-pregnancy.

Do you guys want more kids?

We’re currently undecided, but we love the way our family is right now.

What are your favorite ways to pamper yourself?

Spa day! I love massages, facials, mani/pedis… all of it!

Besides wine, do you have a go-to drink?

I really love Dirty Martinis made with vodka and extra olives. Mmm!

Do you have any health regrets?

Throwing out my retainer. That was one expensive mistake!

Are you a yoga person?

Yes-ish. I don’t practice it often, but I always love it when I do.

What workout move do you loathe?

Squat Cleans. Ugh. They make my quads burns so bad.

When do you feel sexy?

After a workout and a hot shower.

When do you feel your absolute happiest?

Cuddling on the couch with Mal, Quinn, and Murphy. My heart actually flutters when we’re together like this. I love them so much.

  1. Spa days are my favorite way to pamper too! I could use one right now! Before I had my son, I had the best spa day ever at the Mandarian Oriental. It was the BEST spa experience ever!

  2. Love when you do surveys and I LOVE Anna. 🙂

    1) Any regrets: not getting in shape earlier in life. I was 29 when I decided to make big changes with my body. I was never overweight , just ate horribly and was completely out of shape. I’m almost 33 and am in the best shape of my life. Even after a baby! ( I know it’s not a terrible thing though and I’m just glad I finally decided to start)!

    2) Besides wine, go-to drink: classic margarita. Salt on the rocks.

    3) Happiest: when my baby girl smiles and just being together with my family. The best!!

      1. @Tina: I love your answer to # 1 as well and totally agree with you. I was in university when I discovered my love for working out but I wasn’t eating as healthy as I should have been so while I kept my weight in check I know I could have done better. Over the last 5 years I’ve changed to an 80/20 clean diet and make sure that I’m properly fueling my body with the nutrients it needs. I wish I had armed myself with this information sooner because once I started eating better I started feeling better and am also in the best shape of my life.

  3. I am totally with ya on the yoga front. I almost never make time for it, I just think sometimes that it is not worth the time, but I really do love it. It is a perfect way to sit back and force yourself to relax and really open up your body, I am trying to make it a goal to fitting in a class or video at least once a week.

  4. Can you eat what you want or do you have to watch it?: Both. I can eat as absolutely unhealthy as possible and never really go above my current weight, 155. On that same thought, though, I have to work my butt off and eat really, really carefully to lose weight.
    Do you guys want more kids?: We’re in the same boat as you, plus I’m 36 and not ready NOW, so… we might have missed the boat on having more than one child. Plus, daycare would be 2 thousand a month, which is not something we can comfortably afford right now.
    Are you a yoga person?: Totally. I was looking into becoming an instructor when I got pregnant with Harlow… I really haven’t had time to do it since then, but I miss it more than anything, pre-baby.

  5. Great survey! Kind of off topic, but do you know how long you’ll have to do Invisalign? I never had braces and always had really straight teeth, but now they’re starting to move and it’s freaking me out! 🙁 Is it covered by your insurance? Ugh, I am so scared about the cost! I am going to the dentist next week and will discuss my options….Your answer regarding when you feel happiest is so very sweet! You have a beautiful family 🙂

    1. I actually just got my liners yesterday! I have to wear them for 20 weeks (2 weeks per liner) and, unfortunately, none of it was covered by my insurance. They actually aren’t that weird to wear at all, which I’m pretty surprised about!

  6. 1) Any health regrets – agreeing that I missed out on being the best version of myself in my 20’s & 30’s. I am now back peddling to get to where I want to be in the best health for me overall. I’ve always exercised but the bug to be over all healthy did not hit me until in my 40’s and now I’m finding myself regretting I didn’t feel this way back then. Regret is a big word – but what will be a positive turn around to regret is accepting who I am today and being the best I can be today.
    2) Best drink – peach Bellini’s on a Sunday morning.
    3) Are you a yoga person – I am now – I don’t practice regularly but am getting back into hot yoga – for me the cleansing feelings I have after class is so satisfying. I’m really working on getting in one class a week to start.

  7. ah I’m dealing with the EXACT same retainer crisis right now! I got retainers in 6th grade and lost them somewhere between then and college 🙂 now I’m an “adult” and realizing my teeth are moving like crazy! I have an upcoming dental appointment and terrified to learn how expensive my options are (my insurance plan is not very forgiving..). Can you give me a ballpark figure of how much your Invisalign journey cost?!

    1. @Casey: I was always SO good about wearing my retainer, but then it broke in high school and my mom didn’t feel the need for me to get a new one (I guess when you pay for braces for 4 kids you’re just done). My bottom teeth are slowly shifting and just starting to bother me- aesthetically.

      1. @Caitlin:
        It amazes me that after wearing braces for so long that you still need to wear a retainer for life? My oldest (10) had a partial set taken off and still needs a full set. In the meantime she is wearing a retainer until she loses the last of her baby teeth. At one point she threw it away by accident. It took us close to three weeks to get in to the ortho and her teeth had already started to move!
        I can’t imagine her having to wear a retainer the rest of her life but I guess that’s going to be the case.
        I never wore braces and my teeth are still straight. Weird how that works out.

  8. What workout move do you loathe? Barbell/Dumbbell Step Ups. I am not coordinated enough to get them without nearly killing myself. Thankfully, I work out with my sis, so she’s got my back.

  9. 1) Pamper myself with Massages and Mani/Pedi
    2) Yoga- Only recently and I love it now
    3) Feel Sexy- After a shower and throw on booty shorts and a tank top. Also when I get dressed up and add jewelry to my outfit!

  10. I loathe burpees. I get the benefit, I do. But my God they kill.

    I am most definitely a yogi- the hotter, the better. Few things are better than a 6 AM hot yoga class.

    I have to be in the mood for wine. Beer I’m always in the mood for- but it has to be good! No light crap for me.

  11. When I was marathon training I could eat #allthefood but now I am more careful. I like to treat myself by shopping at Whole Foods and/or getting a massage! How does that hour fly by faster than any other hour in my life??!

  12. Not survey related but I dug into the book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” over the weekend and am so hooked! I know you always lust over simplicity and the tiny house movement so I thought you’d love it! At first I was totally skeptical of her approach, but I did my clothing this weekend and I’ve hoping work eases up this week to be able to tackle the second category – books this week! If you haven’t read it I’d def recommend it!

  13. 1) I can eat what I want when it comes to my weight, but if I want clear skin & a happy tummy, I have to be careful 🙂

    2) Go to drink when I’m feeling down is actually tea (ok, well wine, but if I’m ruling out wine it’s tea!), and when I’m out to have a good time, it’s a vodka soda with cucumber vodka (SOOO refreshing!!)

    3) I’m with you – I’m all about the spa days! Sometimes I’ll try to do the whole bubble bath + wine + candles thing”¦but I usually get bored after about 10 minutes. I’ll be laying there like “La la la la la”¦I’m relaxing”¦ la la la la”¦..ok this is boring.” Haha!

  14. 1) Workout move I hate — Tuck Jumps. omg. hate ’em. so hard.
    2) Kids – we currently don’t have any, and tbh, I am not 100% we will. we have been married for 7 1/2 year (married young), and while I am 28 and he is 30 (which still leaves us time to decide), I honestly am not sure yet. I would have thought the “baby bug” would have bitten already, if it was going to, but it hasn’t (at least not enough to make us truly consider having a child). Kids are a BIG responsibility and we are trying to make sure we are truly ready. (LONG answer! 🙂 )
    3) Yoga — not so much. I practice every once in a blue moon, but don’t love it enough to do it consistently. For low impact workouts (like yoga), i prefer barre or walking.

    Are you a yoga person? I wish! I love yoga and think it does such great stuff to my bod, but I have a hard time sticking to it consistently compared to other workouts. (prob cuz I still look for the calorie burn)

  16. 1. Favorite Ways to Pamper: buying myself flowers and watching Downton Abbey haha.

    2. Yoga person: No way. I need to so much but I can’t physically make myself!

    3. Health regreats: The way I treated my body while I was in active addiction. I wish I could get those years back.

  17. Do you guys want more kids? We currently have a 15-mo and I have total baby fever and would have another NOW if my husband would let me. He wants to wait until our son is 2 but I have had baby fever for several months. He also only wants 2 kids but I would love 3 if he changes his mind 🙂 Or maybe the next would be twins, ha! He gets his 2 pregnancies but I get my 3 kids…he would be mind blown!

    What workout move do you loathe? I have a love/hate with a burpee. But man I have to have a serious mental conversation with myself before I embark on that move.

    Do you have any health regrets? Baking myself to death in high school either outside or in a tanning bed. Why couldn’t sunscreen be my friend!

    My top retainer that I’ve worn every night for 16 years just broke! I might have shed a tear or two…luckily the bottom one is fine, but now I’ll need a new top one. gahh $$$$.

    We’re totally wanting more kids–I’m pregnant with my 2nd right now! And I agree, being with my people is THE BEST feeling in the world.

    2) Best drink: Extra chilled dirty martinis and Zengria’s from my favorite restaurant (they’re made with Sake instead of Wine…hence the name Zengria)

    3) Feeling sexy: After a day at the hair salon.

  20. 1. Drink other than wine: An amber beer, like Boston Lager or Fat Tire.
    2. Yoga person: I like how it stretches me out when I do it, but I usually pick Pilates over yoga for strength/flexibility work.
    3. Kids: I want a second furry child…does that count? My husband and I are newlyweds, so actual kids aren’t on our radar yet. Just dogs that we treat like children 🙂

  21. I made the same retainer mistake. Saving up for invisalign!

    we are undecided on another baby, too. Leaning towards no, but not looking forward to the questions about it from strangers. “ONLY one child?!?” ahhhh

  22. I have a few of your surveys as drafts that I need to get to work on (will def. link up when I do!). Brings me back to the Myspace days when I used to do surveys all. the. time.!

    1. Pressure to get back into shape after baby: I didn’t start working out until after my 2nd baby (at age 25). I felt a little pressure but I became hooked once I realized how much workouts empowered me and made me stronger from the inside out.
    2. Go-to drink besides wine: Vodka mixed with pretty much anything? Is that terrible?
    3. Workout move I loathe: Pretty much anything related to arms. I’d just rather be working legs or back or something, haha.

  23. My favorite way to pamper myself is getting my hair done and sports therapy massages. I get one once a month and feel so great afterwards.

    My biggest health regret is not learning about real, proper nutrition in high school. I cleaned up my diet, then basically started crash dieting for whatever reason. I lost a lot of weight initially, then it all came back and then some later. It took me two years to really lose most of it for good, and I’m finally understanding that my body needs good, healthy Calories.

    I LOATHE thrusters and burpees. I’m terrified we’ll see some combination again for 15.5!

    1. My go-to drink other than wine is also a dirty martini.
    2. I really hate tricep push-ups. (But I do them ALL the time when teaching group fitness)
    3. I love snuggling on the couch with my husband after we’ve cleaned up dinner on the weeknights when we are both home.

  25. Urgh squat cleans… I hate when they come up in programming but I think out of everything I loathe box jumps the most – I just can’t seem to work out how to ‘jump’ – my head just won’t let me do it! Stack up some plates, yep I can jump on those, put a box out and nope! Damn crazy head! haha!

  26. I love when you post surveys! I’ve stolen one or two that you’ve done (always link back to you of course!) So keep them coming!
    Can you eat what you want? If I’m working out, yes. I think I eat too little when I’m in training, so I try to eat everything and anything to stop being hungry! Otherwise, when I’m not working out, I pack on pounds and feel gross in general.

    Besides wine, do you have a go-to drink? I order the darkest beer on the menu anywhere I go, or get a flight if I’m at a brewery. Otherwise, it’s always water.

    Are you a yoga person? In some ways…I enjoy it but prefer a faster-paced flow rather than a more meditation-based practice. At my gym I go to PiYo, which is really fast paced and has a bit of meditation at the end. Love it!

  27. I do yoga on occasion and I always love it because it takes me back to my ballet days.

    We do want one more child, but don’t want to even try for another until Ellie is 2. My husband wouldn’t mind 3, but luckily he’s ok with 2 also.

    I can pretty much eat whatever I want, but I don’t always want to eat a ton of junk. Sometimes I do, but it’s not enough that it affects my weight or how I feel long term.

  28. Well, even if you’d worn your retainer forever, you could be like me & still need braces again! I’m actually on my second round of traditional braces (as a 32 year old who just had them from 2007-2009)! I wore my top retainer faithfully & had a bonded retainer on the bottom, but my bite shifted & was damaging my bottom front two teeth. So, in the fall of 2013 they put on braces for another two year round (which is fortunately being done for half price by the orthodontist who took over the practice of my retired ortho)…

    Hated workout move: pushups or more than 5 burpees in a row

    Health regrets: Not taking care of myself sooner. It takes so long to repair and heal your body when you abuse it for so long
