Hi Tina,
I read your book in one night! It was such an entertaining and honest read. I love your recipes and will surely be trying all of them. I am very curious about wheat berries now thanks to your suggestions. I am excited to read your future blog posts.
I think you provide readers/followers with great diet advice because your suggestions do not recommend counting, measuring and weighing, all of the crazy “diet” stuff. Your mantra is about not being on a “diet”, just eating good food and exercising. I love it!
Thanks for all your great suggestions, ideas and insight.
Amy Thoms, RD, CDE
Tina,
I just bought your book today, and I LOVE it so far! I’m sure I will finish it within the week. Your sense of humor, honesty, and outlook on life is so refreshing! Thanks for the good read! I am currently starting my own healthy living blog, and you have been a great inspiration to me. Please pass along any tips/advice you may have!
Thanks,
Ashley
Hi Tina. I actually found your site after reading your “review” of Naturally Thin, Bethenny Frankel’s book. I have been wanting to read it, as I, too am a fan of hers. I totally agree with you. As a healthy eater, her content wasn’t a surprise to me, and I think it would have been better if she consulted with some registered dietitians to add a little credibility. A lot of what she said, as far as self help, did help me. I like the bank account metaphor, as I keep that in min with my twin (five year) old girls when it comes to their nutrition. When Bethenny had her typical eating week at the end, I was definitely turned off to see her skipping meals and considering a BITE of cake and a glass of alcohol daily dose. I much prefer your healthy choices you make three meals a day combined with your exercise – you’re not overdoing either, but it seems more doable to have a slice of carrot cake once in a while and exercise daily, then to have a bite of this and a bite of that. I’m glad I found your blog and hope to visit as much as I can. p.s. I live in Dedham, so local girl, myself
Hey!
I had your husband as my social studies teacher last year! I found out about your blog and its great. I, too, am a runner and I JUST started a blog! Your posts are really helpful to me, especially since I am interested in sustainable and active lifestyles 🙂

Hi Tina! I was thinking of investing in the fuel belt, but I wanted to know if you ever use it and if it is a good investment!? Thanks! 🙂 p.s. must reiterate how much I love following your blog! 🙂
I really like mine and use it quite a bit on my long runs. Are you training for something?
@Tina:
yes! I have decided to train for my first half marathon! woo hoo!(i think haha) Actually reading your blog is what really has inspired me to do it so thank you! I’m hoping I’ll have the mental endurace to do it! eek!
Congratulations on your marathon! You did great! I picked up your book after seeing it in B&N. The book is very entertaining and full of usable information. Did I see in one of your blog entries you were in Orlando? That is my neck of the woods.
Keep up the good work.
So I was telling my husband about you and your blog, and where you went to school, and he’s like “I went to school with her, elementary school, but yeah!” My world out here on the East coast just gets smaller all the time in the best way!
By the way, any tips on recovering from TRX (my class is 60 min. & my core strength isn’t what it should be), and pulled abs would be most helpful.
Have a great day!
Small world! If you guys have the same last name, I know who your husband is! Please say hi to him for me! 🙂
@Tina:
We do, and I will!
Tina,
I really like your blog. I am interested in a lot of the same things… started from the food side but really got into exercise this past year and am starting to get drawn to cross fit too. Would love to have my blog be as successful as yours or at least get some comments! But I have to admit, I love writing the content more than doing all the computer work linking to blogs etc that go with being a blogger. Maybe I need to find a place to provide content and go that route instead. Anyway, if you feel called to look at my blog I’d love to hear what you think! http://fromprocessedtopure@blogspot.com
Hi Tina,
So I was talking to a friend of mine about running, weight loss, life, etc. and she mentioned your blog. I must say that I am not usually someone who reads blogs or participates in blogging for that matter, but I was pleasantly surprised by your site. I started running about a year ago and honestly did not think I would ever be able to run a mile. I am up to six miles now, but am slowly working my way up. I do a lot of strength training and spinning as well. I only wish I would have found your site sooner. A couple years ago I was extremely overweight and finally reached my tipping point at 217 pounds. At 5’8″ that is quite a heavy load! I was always athletic growing up and when I got to college I was not overly concerned with fitness or my health. Needless to say I thought I could just eat (and drink) whatever I wanted, which resulted in my gaining 70 pounds between freshman year and graduate school. I am not sure if you have ever seen 70 pounds of fat, but it is not pretty! I felt horrible. I looked to eating for comfort. I was embarassed by my appearance and I had very little energy to make it through the day. One day I woke up and had enough. I had to make a decision: was I going to continue on my destructive path or take charge of my future and my health? The decision was not an easy one! It required changing my life and my habits. It required hard work: cutting portions, planning meals, exercising regularly, and realizing that the results would take time….lots of time. I talked to my doctor, consulted a nutritionist, joined the gym, and researched recipes and exercises that would help keep me motivated (and I had a wonderful support system at home)! Two years later here I am….65 pounds lighter and a million times happier! Looking back I cannot even begin to comprehend why I did not do something sooner. Live and learn I suppose! In closing, being healthy is about making choices. I chose to change my lifestyle and I know I am better for it. I still enjoy an occasional cocktail (or few), love chocolate, and know when to indulge! Thank you for helping to inspire others and happy blogging!
What an amazing story! Congrats on your health and weight loss success, and thank you so much for your kind words! 🙂
Aww murph is SO adorable! So this is a random question, but Tina where did you purchase your truffle oil?! I love all things truffle flavored and that sounds like a great thing to add to salad, pasta, everything…. 🙂
@JULIA: You can buy it at specialty food/cooking stores like Williams-Sonoma and Dean & Deluca.
blarrgh I have no idea how I ended up here…I was initially commenting on murphys new toy??? HAHA @JULIA:
so upon reading the Union newsletter we get in the mail every so often because I go there (sophomore) and my sister just graduated, I saw the article on you! I was flipping through actually right after I had just looked at your blog and thought you looked familiar only to realize that it was because I follow your blog! crazy how many people are connected to Union since it is such a small school!
I’ve noticed that you put truffle oil on your salads a lot instead of dressing. What kind of truffle oil do you use? I was hoping to find some on your Open Sky page, but no luck.
Thank you!
I received mine as a gift, so I’m not sure of the brand, but specialty cooking stores like William-Sonoma sell it.
Tina,
I started following your blog about 4-5 months ago in search of more creative recipes for my family. I think I found you through another blogger, but not sure which one. I love and share your passion for exercise. My question is – now that you’ve got the crossfit bug, I’m really curious on your thoughts on the paleo diet. I’ve started crossfit recently as well, and we are very careful with what we eat – but it’s sure not paleo!
Thanks!
I know a lot of CrossFitters are into Paleo, but it’s not for me. I like oatmeal, cheese, and beer way too much to ever give them up! 🙂
Just curious, I’m in the same boat 🙂 Hope you feel better soon, I’m sure you just want to do normal again.

Hey! I just stumbled upon your blog the a couple weeks back and have since read your book. I must say that I absolutely loved it! You share a lot of similar view points on how eating should be and so far the past week since reading your book I have felt better about myself and my eating and my clothes have gotten a lot looser already. I’ve in total lost about 30lbs and striving for that last 10lbs (the hard buggers!). Anyhou, I am currently in a leg cast (torn achilles tendon) and still working out upper body and glutes everyday, along with attempting to cut back on calories in order to lose that weight before my trip to Mexico in 4 weeks from today. Any advice/tips in order to achieve this goal while on the sidelines for regular cardio/strength training? Any advice would be great! The last thing I want is to feel uncomfortable in a swimsuit in Mexico!!

He has it! He actually wore it yesterday! 🙂
Congratulations, you have just earned yourself another faithful follower…me! You are so inspiring. I love your blog and your advice is so realistic, no-nonsense and valuable. I can sense your passion through your writing- you truly want to help people improve their health. I’ve read 12 of your articles just today and I felt like you were speaking directly to me.
I have a huge challenge ahead of me. I am 5’3, gained 50lbs in 3yrs which puts me at a weight of 200lbs. My spirit is broken, my energy is non-existent and my body feels abused due to days of overeating and no exercise. I started my new lifestyle yesterday which includes healthy foods (lots of veggies and fruits, NO PROCESSED FOODS), yoga 3x a week and a running program which has me running in intervals 3 times a week. Luckily, I ran into your blog because of some random Google search and I read your weight loss story, it was so great! I decided your blog will be a major tool for me as I pant, huff & puff and sweat my way down my road to a new, healthier lifestyle.
I also recently got engaged and our official wedding date is November 3, 2012. My fiancé is so supportive and wants me to be happy and at peace. Thanks again for all of the awesome stuff you’ve written!!!!

Hi Tina,
I’ve recently got into cooking more and have been inspired by some of your recipes. They are delicious! I was wondering what type of food processor you use when making pancakes, muffins, etc.
Thanks! Oh and am a huge fan of your blog!
Kathleen
From one pug lover to another, you have to see this! It’s hysterical.

Hi Tina,
Can you recommend a whey protein powder that does not have stevia or artificial sweeteners. I find many are way too sweet.
Zana
I love this one: https://opensky.com/carrotsncake/product/foodscience-protein-powder
Tina, Thanks so much for mentioning my blog. I can use all the help I can get spreading the word!

Tina,
I have a totally random of questions….when you make your Paleo bread do you use that Magic Loaf pan? I want to try the recipe but was wondering how essential that pan is.
Thanks for your thoughts!
Michelle
Nope, just a regular loaf pan! 🙂
Hello Tina!
I thoroughly enjoy your website! I was surfing the internet looking for new healthy food blogs to inspire me as I love fitness and nutrition. So I came across a site that linked me to your website and I must say I love it! I haven’t read your book yet, but I can hardly wait to get it and read it! Thanks for the inspiration and happy trails!
Thanks, Diana! So glad you found CNC! 🙂
Hi there, I’ve been reading your blog for a while now and have decided to try a couple of your food ideas. But there are a couple of things I wanted to ask you. Firstly, I’ve notices you drink almond milk with your iced coffee. Can you heat almond milk for hot coffees? Secondly, I’m having issues with freezing bananas. I place them in freezer bags but they go all dark and slimy. Is this normal? How long can they be kept in the freezer?
Thanks heaps. Love your blog 🙂
Marie
Hi Marie! Thanks for your comment! 🙂
As for your questions, I’ve never tried heating almond milk for my coffee, but I think it would work just fine! I freeze my bananas in a Tupperware container, but they don’t get dark and slimy. I also eat them fairly quickly– they usually don’t last longer than a month in our freezer. Hope this helps!
@Tina:
Thanks for the speedy reply Tina 🙂
Do you freeze the bananas still in their skins?
I tried you omg pancakes today! And they are amazing! You ate one clever chef 🙂 Kept me nice and full during a crazy busy morning at work! The only problem is where I live in Australia i can only get but butter in small jars and it’s pretty expensive. But that’s ok, I’ll manage for such wonderful breakfast food!!
Nope, I peel them first! 🙂
Hi Tina,
I was wondering what brand and type of vanilla protein powder you use when baking. I wanted to make your coconut protein cookie recipe but in the past I have been somewhat unsuccessful baking with protein powder. Thanks for your help!
Allison
I used vanilla fitmixer protein powder.
@Tina: Thanks 🙂
Just thought I’d let you know. I’m waiting for my first ever crossfit class. I’m nervous but excited. Hope I like it 🙂
(this all your fault – hahaha)
Fun! Hope you enjoy it! 🙂
@Tina: last night was cool. We did very little actual work because they run a fundamentals class that teaches technique etc. But I got to sneak a peak at the wod going on around us. Oh my golly this is going to be intense, but looks so, so fun!!! Hope the bank account holds up!! 🙂
@Tina: I did Tina thanks. It was only a techniques class but I’m hoping to get up and go again omorrow before work. I think it’s going to be a painful weekend! Can’t wait (but am pretty nervous and intimidated!!)
Hi, I am running a healthy bake-off at my work next month and we plan on passing out some tips to folks on ways to sub in healthy things instead of fats/sugars/etc. Any favorites you would like to pass along?
Check out this post that I wrote awhile back: http://news.health.com/2012/02/28/healthy-baking-tips/ Hope it helps! 🙂
Tina,
Just found your site and I love it!! Just wondering…what kind of stuff does your husband like to eat on a daily basis? Since going paleo-(ish) about a year ago, my husband still feels a little lost. He’s also a crossfitter, so he needs to eat A LOT! Thank you!
He pretty much eats like me (Paleo-esque) with Greek yogurt and cottage cheese in the mix.
Colitis. My daughter (3-1/2 year old) has just be diagnosed with ulcerative Colitis. It is horrible to watch her poop these shape-less bloody poops. She is on meds, not steroids YET. But, I fear that is the next step.
QUESTION: have you found any food that aggravate it. OR have you found foods or supplements that help?
Please share anything you know. We are a month into this and I am trying to learn as much as I can. Thanks!
Here is a testimonial about someone who switched to a whole-foods, plant-based diet and it has sent her ulcerative colitis into remission. Have you ever considered or tried a plant based diet before? I have read testimony after testimony of how switching to a diet like this has healed people’s bodies (whether from heart disease, cancer, MS, diabetes, UC, etc etc) and given them their lives back. I am in the process of transitioning to a diet like this myself, because you just can’t ignore the results that people have.

Im from the Uk and my sister and I both love your blog, you have given us so many nutritional ideas and inspriation to workout in different ways! But I LOVE how you blog about Murphy, its so freshing to see that im not the only person obsessed by there dog! Keep up the good work!
So glad you guys enjoy CNC! 🙂
Hi Tina,
I wanted to let you know I’m very grateful for your excellent weblog. It’s so real. I was looking for some kind of source for improving my English when I came across your page. I really enjoy it because it’s a real life not less not more.
And also it helps me learn more English and learn how to say what I want to say.
I must say you’re a great writer so keep writing. 🙂
From the other side of the globe with respect,
Havar

hey Tina 🙂 I recently (yesterday) found your blog and am already in love with it! I’ve been going through so much of your posts, I already feel like I know you 😀 I love your positive outlook on working out, food and life in general 🙂 I’m also trying to live an active and healthy life and your blog is helping 🙂
I just wanted to ask you, if I make the Overnight Oats In a Jar in the evening and take them out of the fridge in the morning, how long can they last before turning bad? because I’m going on a trip tomorrow and despite being a morning eater, 5 AM is still a bit early for me too so I would like to take my jar with me in the bus and eat it when I get hungry 🙂 what do you think? thanks in advance 🙂 keep up the good work!
I think they’d probably be okay, just as long as they don’t get too warm.
@Tina: thanks!
I don’t know if you have ever tried it, buy since you love oatmeal so much (me too!), you should try palenta-oatmeal. it has no oats in it, it’s just soft-cooked palenta with an adittion of some fruit and some soy milk, it’s so yummy! 🙂 and a scoop of some nut butter of course!
Hi Tina,
I have been a fan of the blog for years, and just wanted to say what a wonderful inspiration you are to a twenty something teacher recovering from an ED. I never really comment on blogs, but I was on Amazon today and happened upon your book. I just graduated from college so any leisure reading has been postponed, but I read the reviews out of curiosity. I am sure you have seen most of them, since they date back a year or so, but I was so taken back by the hateful and caddy remarks made by women. I was really surprised to see other bloggers (one in particular) be so negative and rude, but of course jealously is often ugly. It felt like the chick who wrote the Marie Clare article all over. I wonder if these women see how hateful and sad they seem to readers?
Anyway, keep up the amazing work.
I think I’m doing fran for the first time ever tonight. I’m beyond nervous.
Hi Tina!
I found your blog a few months ago and read it everyday.. love it! Question- What are your feelings about non-stick cooking sprays (like Pam)? I try to eat pretty clean, and I know you do too, but it hit me this morning that these are probably actually bad for you! Any thoughts?
I use them occasionally for my cooking– I think they’re great for convenience. I don’t use them ALL of the time, so I’m not too worried about the chemicals.
Hi Tina,
I’m a new reader, but I am already addicted to your blog it is so inspirational! I just decided I need to change my eating habits last week (part of my new years resolution) and I am doing quite well. So thank you!
I was wondering if you have ever used probiotics or have any information on them. I have been looking on various websites at various products but the consumer reviews aren’t giving me enough insite on rhe products. Most i find are complaints about broken capsils.. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks!
I have Ulcerative Colitis, so I take a really strong probiotic called VSL#3, which was recommended by my doctor: http://astore.amazon.com/canca0c-20/detail/B0041IUPLG
Hi Tina!I attempted your Saturday morning pancakes the other day and they came out incredibly thin, I think it’s because I used almond meal. It’s from Trader Joe’s and I thought almond meal/flour could sometimes be interchangeable in recipes, but I guess not. Do you know anything about this?
@Nicole: I use that same almond meal from TJs. How did you cook them?
@Tina: Thanks for your response Tina! I mixed all of the ingredients and cooked them in a little skillet. Is the batter supposed to be watery? Maybe I wasn’t patient enough.
@Nicole: Hmm… the batter isn’t super thick, but it’s not watery. Did you use large eggs? Maybe medium eggs would work better? Was the skillet warm/hot when you added the batter? Sometimes if it’s cold, it’ll run more than usual.
It was a combination of the cold skillet and the medium eggs I think, thank you Tina! I appreciate it. I will attempt again and let you know 🙂
Tina, I’ve been reading your blog for over a year. I’m a runner/gym goer/etc, and I’m about to start crossfit. Do you have a good shoe recommendation? I’ve been wearing Brooks PureCadence, but I don’t run as much anymore, so I would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!
@Lara ZP: If you check out my CrossFit page, there’s a whole post about shoes. I’m currently wearing and loving the Nano 2.0s. Hope this helps! 🙂
Hi Tina. I am really enjoying your blog and go on regularly to read up on what is new with you. I understand that you also send daily emails. I was wondering how I can get set up to receive them. I would like a break during my workday to for a bit of motivation. I am a new CrossFitter and also enjoy a Paleo lifestyle with the exception of beer, milk and coffee so I feel right at home reading your blog. Thank you for all the inspiration and education.
Welcome to CNC! It sounds like we have a lot in common! 🙂 I don’t have a daily email, but I update my blog a couple of times a day, so be sure to check back!
Hi Tina,
This may be a weird questions, but what kind of food can you take on planes. I see your posts about what snacks you take with you, but I can’t seem to find out the regulations of what I can take. Can I take fruit, repackaged items, etc.? Can you help me?
Thanks so much
You might want to check the TSA rules and regulations for what is allowed and not allowed on planes. I’ve never had an issue with food.
Hey Tina,
I have never been a blog reader, but stumbled on yours a couple of weeks ago while googling fitness questions. I just wanted to let you know that you have been inspiring me to eat balancedly (permission to used my made-up word) instead of eating ‘clean’ (ie starving and bored) during the week and binging on carbs (ie popcorn and ice cream fest) on the weekends. Thank you for your healthy attitude towards food, and your inspirational workouts.
