A Special 30th Birthday

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

I’m not sure who’s more excited about Mal’s 30th birthday today””him or me!


This morning, I woke up before Mal’s alarm went off, so I could make him a big ol’ birthday breakfast before he headed to work.

His breakfast: 2 eggs, 2 pieces of toast with butter, Greek yogurt with fresh raspberries, half of a grapefruit, and a “mini” iced coffee with almond milk since he plans to hit up Dunkin’ Donuts for their $1 Coffee Day on his way to work.

My breakfast: 1 egg, toast with peanut butter, Greek yogurt with fresh raspberries, half of a grapefruit, and an iced coffee with coconut milk.

I have a bunch of fun surprises planned for him later today, and I can’t wait to give him his presents and celebrate with him. I love birthdays, especially Mal’s!

[rewind to last night]


Last night’s CrossFit workout was a lot of fun, and it’s one you can easily do at the gym or at home, so I turned it into an image that you can print or Pin on Pinterest. (FYI: I have a workout board with tons of workouts like this”¦ and a pug board.)


I used a band for the pull-ups and finished in 25:01.


After CrossFit, I was pretty hungry, so I snacked on some trail mix while I made dinner.

I’ve been downing trail mix like it’s my job lately (random handfuls between meals), so I decided to actually measure out one serving, which is 1/4 cup (160 calories). It’s a lot smaller than I thought it was! Mental note: take it easy on the trail mix.


On the menu for dinner: baked chicken and Sweet Potato Wedges cooked in coconut oil, which are the most amazing things ever. I cannot get enough of these babies. I went back for a second (and third) helping last night.

Feel Great Weight

May has been a busy month for me. I feel like I’ve spent more time traveling than at home! The month started off with a 3-day trip to New York City, followed by a day-long fitness conference, another trip to NYC, and then an overnight 200-mile running relay. Even though I’ve been having a blast on the road, it isn’t surprising that all of this nonstop travel involves some fatigue, stress, and makes it more difficult for me to eat well. When I’m running around from place-to-place and event-to-event, I sometimes make poor decisions with regard to my weight-loss goals, like choosing a buttery croissant over a Greek yogurt and happy hour over an early-morning run through a new city.

Being constantly on the go means that my normal eating and exercise routines get a bit out of whack, not to mention slacking on my healthy habits doesn’t make me feel good about myself, so through my travels over the past two weeks, I’ve made it a point to take care of myself and keep my waistline in check. I’ve asked this question on CNC in the past, but I love finding birthday twins (mine is June 19th), so I thought you guys might too! Feel free to play along!

  1. Happy Birthday Mal! My birthday is November 15th and I am a birthday-aholic. In my family you get a birthday week so typically there are treats spread over the week and you pick the dinner menu for the week too. Luckily my fiance is cool with all the birthday excitement at our house. 🙂

  2. I’m turning 30 on August 7th. I’m not sure if I am excited or fearing it yet! My BFF’s birthday is also August 7th but she is a year younger than me. I think it is crazy that she has the same birthday!!

  3. Happy Birthday Mal! My birthday is September 22, which is exactly 6 months apart from my Father’s bday, so we celebrate our half- birthdays too!

  4. January 2nd…worst birthday ever. Friends are usually too hungover from NYE to celebrate on the 2nd. Boohooo I’m a whiny birthday brat. 😉

  5. Happy Birthday Mal! My birthday is July 14, but I’ve never been able to find a birthday twin.

    I am exactly the same way with trail mix! I have to make myself measure out a serving so I don’t eat the whole bag in one day.

  6. Happy b-day, Mal!! Mine is September 10. I love my husband’s b-day too! It’s coming up June 21. I love his b-day because it’s the longest day of the year. Can’t wait to spoil him like crazy because last year we were mad wedding planning at this time.

  7. Happy Birthday to Mal! My husband turns 30 this year and like you, I think I am more excited than he is 🙂
    My birthday is June 13th so we are pretty close. I really do love birthdays…even as I get older it is still awesome to wake up each birthday morning knowing I am alive and it is “my” day. haha sounds selfish but I am all about the day being special!

  9. Happy Birthday Mal! October 7 is my day 🙂 I grew up with a fried who had the same birthday so we were always trying to plan our parties on different days so that we could go to each other’s. I remember feeling devastated when our parties were on the same day one year…

    My birthday is September 7th. In kindergarten it was my first day of school! I got to wear the birthday crown, I was so special! 19 years later, I am hoping work will give me a birthday crown to wear (or the day off???)

  12. Happy 30th Mal! My 30th is this Sunday, May 27th. And, to kick things off, I am running my first half-marathon on the 26th!

  13. You share a birthday with my oldest daughter! She’ll be six this year and she is counting down the days to her birthday and has every detail planned for her birthday party. She cracks me up.

  14. Happy 30th, Mal! I turned 30 last Monday (5/14). I can’t say I was super excited about turning 30 (don’t really feel like I’ve found my ‘place’ yet), but it’s not terrible either. 😉

  15. I’m always really surprised when I actually measure out servings of snacks like crackers and trail mix. It’s always so tiny compared to what I think.
