A Fun, Little Day for Murphy & Me

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.

An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

Hi, friends!

Happy Hump Day! I hope your week is off to a fabulous start!

I started yesterday morning with my favorite (current) breakfast: green juice + a toasted, gluten-free English muffin with peanut butter and banana on one side and sunflower butter and banana on the other side. I could seriously eat this breakfast every morning. It’s the perfect combo””delicious, nutritious, and satisfying!

After breakfast, I got to work. Since I’m leaving for Ireland this weekend, I’m writing a bunch of posts, including a couple of sweet giveaways, to publish while I am away. Be sure to pop into CNC next week to see what’s happening!

While I worked in my office, Murphy played the “indoor-outdoor game,” which I am sure some of the dog (and maybe cat) owners are familiar with.

Murphy can’t decide whether he’d like to be indoors or outdoors, so he scratches at the door (or barks if I don’t hear him right away) every 5-10 minutes. It’s super annoying.

Eventually, I just left the door open so Murphy could come and go as he pleased. But, as soon as I did that, he went into the living room and laid down on the couch. I guess the game wasn’t fun anymore if Mom wasn’t opening and closing the door for him every 5 minutes. What a butthead.

A little while later, I took a break from working and made myself a snack. I had a running + CrossFit date with Kerrie at 11:15, so I needed a little something in my stomach to hold me over through my workout and until lunchtime.

Kerrie and I met for the Kick Ass Virtual 5K that Abby organized to benefit Team Challenge. In honor of the event, I wore my “I {heart} Sweat” shirt (a portion of its proceeds benefit the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America).

After our run, Kerrie and I headed to CrossFit. The Workout of the Day was “Christine,” which I had never done before. (I always get a little excited when one of “The Girls” comes up in the programming at our box!)

I wanted to do the workout as prescribed, but the body weight deadlifts just weren’t happening for me. I loaded 135 pounds on my bar, which I deadlifted a bunch of times, no problem, but I knew by round 3 of “Christine,” my form would probably get pretty ugly, so I scaled down to 105 pounds, which was a much better weight for me. I finished the WOD in 11:02””just seconds behind Kerrie!

After CrossFit, I came home, showered, and then made lunch, which was a couple of Trader Joe’s Vegetable Masala Burgers with some leftover risotto from the night before.

I finished off lunch with some trail mix and dried apricots.

053 (600x450)

After lunch, I got ready to run some errands. It was such a nice day, I felt bad leaving Murphy inside at home, so I took him along for the ride.

054 (600x450)

Our first top: an oil change. I planned to take Murphy for a walk while my car was being worked on, but the mechanic owned a pug himself, so he invited us inside to wait. He was a big fan of Murphy!

After the oil change, I stopped by Marylou’s for an iced coffee. Beautiful weather = iced coffee.

Murphy never forgets where he gets treats from, so when my car approached the drive-up window, he popped his head right up.

Murphy got a Milk-Bone from the nice woman at Marylou’s and ate it in the backseat of my car. A win for Murphy!

When I got home from running errands, I took Murphy for his afternoon walk. It was such a nice day, especially with a White Chocolate Chip iced coffee in hand!

After Murphy’s walk, I finished up some work and then headed to the kitchen for an afternoon snack. I had some sweet potato chips with white bean & basil hummus, which was a wicked good snack.

A little while later, I made dinner, which was Cheesy Garlic and Herb Brussels Sprouts with Chicken Sausage. Once again, this meal was a big hit in our house. Mal must have said, “This is so good” at least a half dozen times while he was eating dinner last night.

The evening ended with a few Paleo chocolate chip cookies. Mal and I finished off the batch!

Bananas cooked in dark brown sugar, butter, rum, and cinnamon, served over ice cream with pecans”¦ sounds absolutely delicious, right? Obviously, Bananas Foster is quite a decadent dessert, but like any tasty treat, it’s not low in calories or friendly on the waistline. Instead of missing out on this classic dessert, try a lighter, smoothie version. It’s almost as amazing as the real thing!

Question of the Day

Does your dog (or cat) play the “indoor-outdoor game”?

What food or drink does warm, sunny weather make you crave?

P.S. Be sure to enter my giveaway to win some goodies from The Laughing Cow!

  1. Warm sunny weather makes me crave an iced green tea latte (nonfat and only one pump classic) from Starbucks. It’s so refreshing and yummy!
And my dog lives outside and she knows she’s not supposed to come in. She step inside once in a while if I leave the door open, but as soon as I look at her, she’ll hop right back out.
I crack up in these posts about Murphy (such as “What a butthead” hahaha).

  2. Yes! Teddy plays indoor outdoor….
and any other game he can think of
to try and be the center of the universe!(He’s a butthead too!)
Thanks for your post! It cracked me up.

  3. When it gets warm I LOVE getting some froyo! Well, it can be below freezing out and I will (and have!) still get froyo. I also love fresh watermelon and the warm weather really makes me crazy BBQ chicken and corn on the cob!

  4. What do you put in your green smoothies?? I just bought a Vitamix and Love it! Looking for new recipes to try out! p.s. I just love Murphy. so Cute!

  5. I also had a White Choc. Chip iced coffee this am … Def. was a great start to to workday for me. I love the bananas foster overnight oats that I posted last week, so this smoothie is a must try! Thanks

  6. Yes, my English Bulldog loves the indoor/outdoor game, especially when the weather is nice!

And limeade is my warm weather drink of choice 😀

  7. My cat does the same thing! We decided to leave the window open that leads from the house to the screened in porch so he can jump in and out when we are at work. Now, he will only use the window. Even if we have the door open on a nice day he jumps in and out through the window. He is so funny!

  8. Yep, my dog is a pro at that game. He will walk back and forth between the couch and the door and once I let him out, he is ready to come back in 5 minutes later. If I don’t let him in right away he gives a short bark just to remind me that he is out there. He’ll repeat that about 2 or 3 times. It’s annoying but is just so cute he can get away with it.

Warm weather makes me crave sweet tea or frozen yogurt!

  9. Christine… that’s me! 🙂 Too bad I hate rowing though, otherwise that would be a pretty good workout for me.

  10. Beer! My husband and I both agreed the 75 degree day yesterday was “drinking weather” so we had a few drinks last night while enjoying the warmer temps. Old (undergrad) habits die hard, I guess!

    1. @Abby: Me too! Everytime the weather gets nice, we’re like ahhhh time for daydrinking to begin. 10 years out of college and I still think that way.

  11. door (n.) something a dog is always on the wrong side of.

Our dog does the same thing, although not to that extreme. Sometimes she just comes in for a second to check on us, and then requests to go back outside.

  12. all of your pictures of marylous make me so jealous. i almost got that white bean hummus at TJs yesterday after seeing it on your blog, but i didn’t want to leave it sitting in the car for too long. i’ll have to go back and get some!

  13. Your pug is the cutest dog. I also crave Ice Coffee too!! Sounds like a wonderful day to celebrate the beautiful weather we are having. Its going to be pretty dismal for the next few days but I am hoping Saturday is going to be a good one, I am going to to the Red Sox game!

  14. Our Malamute used to stick his head out of the window at drive-throughs. And red lights. And when there was a car next to ours. Because he knew he’d get yummy stuff. Or at least admiration.
    Dogs are very smart, lol!

  15. We don’t have a yard, but I’m sure if we did my dogs would be the exact same way. For now, he sits by the door and stares at me till I break down and take him for a walk. He would live outside if I let him! Our other dog is content to just lay on the couch all day. 🙂

  16. Our dogs love that In/Out game and the minute you leave the door open, they decide to lay indoors or right outside the door “just in case”. Congrats on the Laughing Cow too!

  17. I was in the South Shore over the weekend and practically drove off the rode when I saw a Marylou’s. Had to get myself a cup of iced coffee.

  18. Love the shot of Murphy ordering a milk bone – totally cracked me up! Warm weather always makes me crave chips and salsa, preferably eaten by the pool with a margarita alongside 🙂

  19. My dog always plays that game! I live in a high rise building so he only gets to go out on the balcony not in a yard, but I feel like as soon as he gets outside he gets scared of the wind and noise! And when it is hot outside I think the only thing I ever crave is a cold margarita in hand on the rocks, always hits the spot!

  20. We (my ancient cat and I) do the indoor outdoor game during the night while I’m trying to sleep. You’d think I could sleep through a cat pawing at the door but he wakes me up everytime.

  21. This post made me laugh out loud for real. It reminds me of my dogs and human like they are sometimes! I dont know what I would do without my pups! I have those sweet potato chips at my house and they are soooo good! Good Job on Christine, I havent done that one yet either!

  22. I’m diggin the “I <3 Sweat" t-shirt.

We live in a high rise, so unfortunately Duke does not get the option to do Inside/Outside. That would be very time consuming with 30 floors of elevator involved!

Warm weather always makes me want melon. Watermelon, cantalope, honeydew, all are favorites!

  23. What a fun day 🙂
I love those TJ’s veggie burgers!! Also, the frozen bags of Superfood Pilaf, love!
