With summer (finally) on the way and lazy beach days in the near future, I wanted to share the list of my all-time favorite nutrition books. Each one of these books has shaped the way I think about food in its own unique way. If you’re looking for a good read to curl up with under the sun or an audiobook to power you through your warm-weather workouts, be sure check out my recommendations below! And, of course, I’d love to hear about your favorite nutrition books too – I’m always looking for new ones to read!

The Obesity Code: Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss by Dr. Jason Fung

I’ve mentioned The Obesity Code on the blog before, and it’s definitely one of the all-time greats. Dr. Fung writes in depth about how obesity and weight gain is actually hormonally driven, and offers five steps to follow if you want to get your insulin levels under control. This was definitely an eye-opening read that led me to really question EVERYTHING I *thought* I knew about nutrition and weight loss.

What to Eat by Marion Nestle

What to Eat offers a very straightforward, no-frills approach to healthy eating. This book is set up like a trip to the grocery store (super fun!), and demystifies several common misconceptions by explaining nutrition labels and debunking food myths, aisle by aisle. Where to shop and what to purchase for optimal health at the grocery store can be confusing, and if you are just starting out on your healthy-living journey, this is the book for you! I also absolutely love that Marion Nestle actually encourages readers to eat “junk” food in moderation (because we are all human), instead of flat-out demonizing it. Perfectly in line with my mantra that healthy eating isn’t black and white!

Wired to Eat by Robb Wolf

Wired to Eat is groundbreaking in the sense that it advocates the complete opposite of most conventional weight-loss ideology –  eat more and move less! It’s written by Robb Wolf, one of THE experts on the Paleo lifestyle and author of The Paleo Solution, so you know it’s full of the good stuff. The book offers a nutrition plan that will balance blood sugar levels and reset your appetite, as well as accompanying recipes and shopping lists. This so much more than just a diet book, though – Robb also tackles the emotional traps that we sometimes set, like blaming ourselves for being overweight and that our thoughts have more power than we give them credit for. I give this one two thumbs-up!

Fit from Within by Victoria Moran

This one’s a throwback – I read Fit From Within when I first started CNC as a way to keep me on track with healthy eating, and it definitely helped with motivation! It’s an oldie but goodie – a super no-nonsense read about how losing and maintaining weight has more to do with our thoughts than just counting carbs. I love how Victoria Moran writes from her own personal struggles with food and body image, and that her approach is holistic, encompassing both body AND mind, not just the latter! Plus, this book is set up as once-daily short readings, so it’s perfect for those on-the-go summer days!

It Starts With Food by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig

You guys have heard of the Whole30 diet, right? Well, it started with this book! It’s an eye-opening read that inspired a whole movement. Dallas and Melissa Hartwig explain in-depth about how what we eat affects so much more than just our weight – a diet heavy in “crappy” food can lead to a host of other issues and diseases, such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and even seemingly diet-unrelated things like acne and allergies. It Starts With Food includes recipes, a meal-planning template and a shopping guide. If you’re considering trying out the Whole30 diet in the near future, this is a must read to learn the why behind the what!

Animal Vegetable Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver

Another one of the classics! ! Animal Vegetable Miracle tells the tale of the Kingsolver family and is written by it’s matriarch, Barbara. The family spent an entire year eating food that was only grown within 100 miles from their own farm.. You will learn about about how this “experiment” ultimately put them back in touch with natural processes, and led to the family opening a farm-to-table restaurant as well as a program encouraging sustainable food production. This book really inspired me try and eat as locally as possible. If you are interested in how to eat more sustainably while leaving less of an environmental footprint, check Animal Vegetable Miracle out!

So there you have it, folks! My top nutrition books that I would recommend to anyone looking to learn more about how/what to eat, and how a healthy lifestyle impacts and is impacted by so much more than your weight! Happy reading!
