I’m the owner of Carrots ‘N’ Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I use macros and functional nutrition to help women find balance within their diets while achieving their body composition goals.


An in-depth, 4-week reverse dieting course for women who feel like their metabolism has slowed down, think they might have hormonal imbalance and can’t lose weight no matter what they do.

So, is it too early to start thinking about my race calendar for next year?



Well, I’m a planner, and I just can’t help myself sometimes, so I’m already setting the wheels in motion.

The first race on my calendar for 2013 is the Rock ”˜N’ Roll New Orleans Half Marathon! Go big or go home!


I’m running this one with my friends Monica and Chandra. The three of us have been talking for months about planning an epic reunion, so when someone suggested this race, we knew it was the perfect adventure. Fun, friends, flashing, and running! I can’t wait to see what shenanigans transpire from this weekend!

Also on my race calendar for 2013 is the ZOOMA Annapolis Half Marathon, which I am running on behalf of ZOOMA as one of the members of their Blogger Advisory Panel.


I am totally psyched for this race. When I saw Anne a couple of weeks ago, she raved about the ZOOMA Annapolis Half Marathon (it was her first half marathon), which got me even more pumped for it!

Registration for the ZOOMA Annapolis Half Marathon & 10K is now open, and if you register before March 3, 2013, you’ll received a special Training Care Package in the mail. ZOOMA put together all the items they think are essential when you start training for a race””practical things to set you up for success and fun things to keep you motivated, too! ZOOMA is also looking for ambassadors for the Annapolis race.

ZOOMA ambassadors are active, energetic, creative running/healthy living bloggers who are influential both online through social media and in their running communities. Our ambassadors inspire, encourage and motivate other women to better themselves through running. All fitness and experience levels are encouraged to apply.

As an ambassador, you will. . .

Use your blog, twitter, Facebook and various social media accounts to inform your followers about ZOOMA, inspire them complete a half marathon or 5K/10K, and serve as an ambassador for women’s running in the local  community.

Yesterday morning’s breakfast was kind of a bomb. It tasted fine, but it didn’t look pretty. I tried to make pumpkin pancakes, but the batter ended up being too thin””almost like a crepe””and then stuck to the pan, so it came out like a weirdo pumpkin omelet. I think there’s hope for this recipe, so I’m going to try again and make some tweaks to it.

After breakfast, I took Murphy for a walk and then got my work on. I broke for lunch a few hours later. On the menu: leftover veggies and chicken mixed with the Curry Spice Blend (minus the sea salt), which I am totally obsessed with. I swear, it makes any old boring meal taste a million times better!

After lunch, I did some baking and made a mess of the kitchen.

Mal always says it looks like poltergeist come to visit when I bake/cook because I leave all of the cabinets open. Haha!


Of course, I needed to sample a Butternut White Chocolate Chip Bar. Mmmmm! Great afternoon snack!

Have you started to think about races for 2013? What races do you want to add to your calendar for next year?



  1. Thanks for the tip on the Zoom ambassadors. I was actually considering the Annapolis 1/2. I absolutely LOVE Annapolis and i know you will too. I’ll definitely let you know if I do sign up. It would be so great to see you again! 🙂

  2. Holy cow–you and Lindsay (from Lindsay’s List) are both rocking 4 minute planks! That’s awesome! I haven’t even attempted it yet–but I know I can do at least 4 1-minute planks. Maybe I should challenge myself this weekend.

  3. You need to make a trip to Houston for a half marathon, like the Aramco Houston Half Marathon 🙂 Then I could meet you!!! LOL. Not sure when my race will be next year since I had the diagnosis of Lupus and have had to start from square one again…..I am doing 4 miles this weekend so I am working my way back up 🙂

  4. It’s never to early to start planning. My Thanksgiving menu is already planned! Have you tried putting a lid on your pancake creation, lower the heat, and cook for a couple min, then flip? I do that when I make the 2 ingredient pancakes. It helps it stay in one piece for me. Happy Friday!!

  5. I have definitely been thinking about 2013 races and my comeback. I have been seeing Rock n Roll New Orleans EVERYWHERE and I am so tempted to do it. I don’t think it’s in the budget right now, but it’s a couple days after my birthday and I can’t imagine planning a 2014 race already!!

  6. I’m traveling down from Boston to NOLA for this marathon! My best friend and I decided to run it together as our first marathons. I’ve been rereading a lot of your older posts on training for a marathon through the winter here in Boston 🙂

  7. I really want to start racing! I’ve only gotten in to running this past year, totally inspiring by yourself and the likes of Anne and Theodora of course. Plagued by injuries and finally fighting fit I need to check out the race schedule in Ireland and get signing up! Well done on the mention!!! 🙂

  9. Yay for that shoutout in Runner’s World! So cool. And I haven’t thought too much about races for next year, but I think it may be time for me to cross a half-marathon off my list. It’s on my list of 30 things to do before I’m 30, so I think it’s time I get it done!

  10. I’ve done the RNR New Orleans twice (well, once before it was Rock n Roll) and its great! I’m a NOLA native, so slightly biased. Ify ou need any food/watering hole recommendations I have a loooooooooooooong list!

    1. Thank you! Where should we stay? We want to stay close-ish to the race, but we also want to stay in a fun area and not spend a zillion dollars on a hotel.

      1. @Tina: Unfortunately, hotels aren’t my strong point! Not too sure about price, but Le Pavillion would put you REALLY close to the start (its where we peed last year :), also try the Marriot, JW Marriot and Sheraton (all on Canal St.). Hotels like the Springhill Suites and Hampton Inn Convention Center would put you at a reasonable (walkable) distance from the start (this is called the Warehouse District). There are PLENTY of hotels on Poydras (where the race starts) and Canal if you look early enough. Good luck!

  11. Congrats on being in Runners World (and congrats to Murphy too!). I only have once race on my calendar so far – the F^3 Half Marathon here in Chicago on January 26th! Since I’m graduating law school, have a family wedding and my best friend’s wedding, might be moving?? and I’m taking the Bar exam all next year, I’m not ready to sign up for races this far in advance, I don’t even know where I’ll be!

  12. Mine and my fiance’s first half marathon was RnR New Orleans 2 years ago! It was SO much fun! Great course, amazing food, fun atmosphere, and overall a blast! We’re running in RnR Arizona in January and I saw the other day that was yours and Mal’s first marathon. We’re just running the half, but we’ve both never been to Arizona so we’re super excited!

  13. Gasp! That is a huge pet peeve of mine…leaving the cupboards open! Mostly because I am clutzy as all get out and I will forget and hurt myself…hit my head on a cabinet corner, dent my shin…you know, things that are really ridiculous. 🙂

  14. I need to make those butternut squash bars, and i have some squash so I think ill do that this weekend! I wonder if I add some protein powder if they will still be good?? I just want to say I love your blog, I am officially obsessed and I have only been following you for like 3 days! I found you from the sarafit.com blog. You both are great and inspirational! But i loooove baking and cooking so thank you for all your recipes!

  15. I want to run the Nike Women’s Half in DC! I’ve never run a half before – after seeing the pictures from the San Fran Marathon I thought this would be a fun one to try!

  16. Well now that I read this I am all pumped to sign up for something! If tax season doesn’t interfere I might think about the Annapolis half – It will be my second half marathon ever 😀

  17. Tina, I’m running the RNR NOLA HALF!!! It will be my first half and I’m nervous, but super excited! Let us know if you are going to be at a certain spot on Saturday, I can meet you! I love 45 minutes from New Orleans, but we’ll be spending the night there Saturday. Good luck!!!

  18. Wow, you have an ambitious schedule. Any suggestions on a fun race in the Boston area? I don’t run races often, but I’ve been running about 4.5 miles about 5 days a week, and looking for a challenge…preferably ending with a festival of sorts like the harpoon 5 miler. I realize that may be a tall order. 🙂

    This is so hilarious because I leave all my cabinets open too when I am baking and cooking! Sometimes, I even leave the fridge open so long it starts beeping to tell me to close the darn thing! My husband gets so annoyed by this! Keep up the great work. It’s always fun to see what Murphy’s up too as well! 🙂

  20. I do the San Jose Rock’n’Roll half marathon every year, so I’ll definitely be doing that one.
    Also, I’ve already registered for the Big Sur Marathon and planning on registering for the Nike Women’s Half (or maybe full if I’m feeling brave) marathon in October.

  21. Congrats on the Runner’s World mention! You deserve it, this blog is great (and so is Murphy!). I just tried my first cross fit session today, and I LOVED it! I can totally see how you and Mal would get hooked 🙂

  22. I am running Boston next April!! I am STOKED! But first I need to get my bum glute healed. :/

    I always leave the cupboard doors open when cooking and baking too.

Haha, I am a planner too so I don’t think you could ever plan anything too far in advance 😛 I ran in a Zooma race last winter at the National Harbor and was sadly disappointed but would love to have the opportunity to try another one! I’d love to run my first half-marathon injury free and healthy 🙂

  24. I definitely have thought about my runs for next year but I am too hesitant to sign up so early as I was injured this year and had to forfeit two race registrations. I am hoping for healthy legs in 2013, but until I know for sure no signing up.

    Congrats on being mentioned! I know @thebeerrunner (fellow milwaukeean) and he is so awesome (as are you!)

  25. Haha I leave the cabinets open too! How funny.

    And what an exciting race schedule already! I am really bummed. I hurt my ankle way back in March doing Insanity and am now in a boot for 3 weeks (I decided to run my first marathon on it anyway!). Then I am allowed to slowly build back up to running again. If it continues to hurt, I’ll have to consider surgery. Let’s hope not! Because I want to do the Philly Rock’n’Roll half again next year in September!

    Funny that you post about this topic because I was just thinking about my 2013 race calendar too!

    I really want to run the Boston Marathon…or a marathon in general…I’m from Boston, so I figure why not? I am thinking about Team in Training or another charity….The only thing holding me back is that I’d be selling away my Saturday mornings for a good 5 months…I’d have to train all throughout the winter (the horror!)…I’d have to drive an hour to train with the team…and I’m not sure I am fit enough to be successful?

    So many things to think about! I know if I don’t I am going to regret it on race day, but at the same time does the negative outweigh the positive? I DON’T KNOW!!!

  28. So excited you’re doing RNR New Orleans! I live in NOLA and have done both the half and the full. It’s a great scenic, flat course with plenty of spectators! I qualified for Boston 2013 running this full last year! I’ll be doing the 1/2 again this year in preparation for Boston 🙂

    I would suggest staying in the Downtown-Warehouse Arts District (Omni Royal Crescent & Intercontinental are both good hotels) rather than the actual French Quarter if you want a good night’s sleep the night before the race – or you could bring earplugs of course haha. I would also book asap bc hotels fill up super quick for this weekend.

    If you want restaurant or things to do recommendations let me know!

  29. I’m already planning my races for this summer, when track/xc is over. I’ve always wanted to do a race in Annapolis- It’s so beautiful there! The rock and roll series is so much fun. I did the one in providence and I will do it every year from now on. They’re so well run and there’s just so much going on!

  31. Yes! I am currently signed up for 5 half marathons and 1 full marathon in 2013. I’ve gone a bit crazy. The one I’m most excited for is the Goofy Challenge at Disney World in honor of my 30th birthday! One mile for each year of my life and 9.3 because I’m a little goofy. 🙂

  32. I would like for my first race ever to be the Commitment Day 5K! I know it’s not a race for time but that is why I like it for the first one.
