1:45 On The Treadmill + The Sandwich I Devoured After

Mastermind Weekend 1/16

Hey there!

I'm Tina

Gooooooood morning and happppppppy Friday! What a week. It was kind of a weird one with the blizzard and having Mal home for two days in a row. It seemed like a weekend, but now the weekend is here again. Whoa. Obviously, I’m not complaining. I love spending time with my boys””all three of them!

Yesterday morning, I hit the treadmill for my long run this week. I thought about running outside, but after I consulted my running coach and Monica, I decided it wasn’t a very good idea. There’s SO MUCH SNOW here. Hardly any of the sidewalks are clear and some of the snowbanks are as tall as me, so there’s just no where to (safely) run. Long story short: I ran for an hour and forty-five minutes on the treadmill, and I survived.

[Rewind to the morning]

Pre-run eats: Crazy Easy Steel Cut Oats mixed with sweet potato-banana puree (leftover from Quinn’s breakfast) with Greek yogurt peanut butter delight, a fried egg, and a glass of iced coffee with SO Delicious coconut milk creamer.

After breakfast, I dropped Quinn off at daycare and then headed straight to KFIT to do my long run.

Doing a long run on a treadmill has the potential for not being very fun, so I came prepared. I had planned to watch a movie on my iPad or iPhone, but things didn’t work out. I didn’t know our Netflix password and then there wasn’t enough space on my iPad to rent a movie”¦ blah, blah, blah”¦ so I ended up listening to a couple of podcasts to help pass the time. (Here are some of my favorite podcasts.) I finished up an episode of Balanced Bites and then listen to one on autoimmunity on the Dr. Lo Radio Show. Both podcasts kept me entertained and, surprisingly, the first hour flew by. I know, who says that?! Haha! But, seriously, the time passed much faster than I expected and, before I knew it, I only had 20 minutes to go. (Here are some more tips and tricks for how to not die of boredom on the treadmill. I promise it’s possible!)

After my run, I stopped by Marylou’s for an iced coffee and then mixed it with SFH vanilla Recovery as soon as I got home.

After chugging my protein shake, I stretched, showered, and then made lunch, which was a delicious sandwich. Listen to this! In the mix: Creamy Swiss Garlic & Herb from The Laughing Cow with 1 egg, 2 egg whites, and half of a baked sweet potato (chopped into chunks) inside a spinach wrap. OMG, it was so good!

After that, I worked, worked, worked. My afternoon snacks included: A couple of Oatmeal Cranberry Almond Bars, Stonyfield Greek yogurt with gluten-free granola, and Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride tea. I also packed a Perfect Food Bar to take with me on my drive to the hospital to pick up my Holter Monitor, which I’ll wear for the next 24 hours. I hope it tells us something this time!

Question of the Day

What’s the longest you’ve ever run on a treadmill?

P.S. IBD peeps: A reader told me about this great support group on Facebook. Just wanted to share the page: Givin’ It All For Guts Foundation!

  1. On the treadmill, do you ever feel the pressure to go faster? I think that’s the reason I can’t just listen to a podcast–I feel like I gotta focus on speed. I suppose it’s good to change it up and go slower and listen to podcasts sometimes.

  2. Wow! Props for that treadmill run. I honestly can’t run more than 3 miles without wanting to gauge my eyes out haha. I can’t wait for the recipe for those cranberry pay bars- they look amazing! And that wrap too- looks so good! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  3. Two years ago I was training for a half and had to have minor surgery during my training. My surgery was scheduled for Friday and I couldn’t workout for 5 days after it. Since I typically did my long runs on Saturday, the only option I had was to do my long run on Thursday. Thursday it ended up pouring down rain. Normally I dont mind running in the rain, but it was coming down way too hard for me to run in. I decided I really did not want to miss that run because I also decided to do it after a one hour session with my killer personal trainer! I was scheduled to run 11 miles and the longest I had run on the mill was 8. I told myself I could quit when I got to 8 if I really wanted to, but when I got there I only had 3 more miles left so I couldn’t quit! I watched dr oz and ellen to pass the time, brought my gu, took bathroom breaks, and walk breaks when I needed to. I survived and it wasn’t too awful, but running outside is so much better. 🙂

  4. Great job! Did you feel slower on the treadmill than outside? I’m finding that these days I can keep a far faster pace outside than treadmill unless i’m doing speed intervals.

    1. Yes, I definitely feel slower on the treadmill during my long runs. But, tempo runs, I can usually pick up the speed. Maybe I’m weird? Haha! I was definitely dragging at times yesterday though!

  5. Major props on the long treadmill run! I’m not a big runner, but running on the treadmill is always challenging for me! The cranberry bars sound delicious! Can’t wait for the recipe!

  6. I can’t run outside either right now because of the massive snow mounds! It’s not safe – I can’t see the cars coming at corners and they certainly can’t see me. Not to mention my usual path is laced with too much ice for comfort. Not worth it. I don’t love treadmill for long runs but I have been making it work. I break them up in the head, play around with my speed and hope for time to fly.

  7. Once I managed 16 on the treadmill. That winter we had a ton of snow so I did most of my long runs on it, but managed a huge PR (for me) so it worked out. I read the Dragon Tattoo trilogy on my iPad with the text blown up huge!

  8. Two hours is the longest I’ve ever done on a treadmill and you really have to be mentally strong enough to focus and distract your mind from boredom. Good work lady! I can’t wait for the oatmeal bar recipe and holly wow that’s a ton of snow. Happy weekending!

  9. Wow…that’s a long time on the treadmill! I think the most I usually make it is 45 min. Granted, I’ve never trained for anything much longer than a 10k.
I think not going outside was smart. Driving to work around here, even people walking in the road is dangerous. As a driver, I get frustrated, and as a runner, I know I wouldn’t do that to a driver just so I could get in a run. It’s dangerous for everyone. (::Gets off her soapbox::)
My husband is a teacher and also had two days off. I stayed home one day as work was closed, so I agree, it was a weird week. Hopefully we don’t get too much more snow this weekend!

  10. P.S. Just out of curiosity (no judgement, I promise), why all the egg whites without adding the yolk as well? Trying to get in a bunch of filling protein without feeling too full? I love the yolk because it adds not only great flavor, but great vitamins, minerals, omega-3’s, etc! But I can see where you might just want to down a lot of protein without overdoing it while training.

  11. I couldn’t run that long on the TM (well, I say that, but who knows!). I think that the longest I have run on a TM was around 9-10 miles, so about 1:25, so I’m sure I could. But mentally I usually have to tap out after 8. And now my hamstrings probably just wouldn’t have it! But Great run!

  12. I can’t believe you ran that long on the treadmill! The most I can do with my sanity in-tacked is about 3-4 miles. Occasionally, I can muster up enough motivation to fo 5, but that is VERY rarely! Awesome job! Hope you guys are doing ok with all the snow up there!

  13. Great job, Tina! 🙂 I just ran 12 miles on the treadmill on Monday… surprisingly time past fairly quickly. I always try to do little intervals by switching up the speed. I also must have some good music and/or the news on TV. The more things to distract myself, the faster the time goes by! Is there an app. that you use to listen to the podcasts or just iTunes? I’ve always wanted to try listening to these while running, but I haven’t looked into it on my iPhone yet.

  14. I’ve never run more than 8 miles on the treadmill and even that seriously tested my sanity, so good for you for surviving that run! The winters get so tough to stay outdoors once the snow piles up. I don’t have a treadmill so I have to drive to a gym to use one which makes my tolerance for outdoor running a bit higher, but still with frigid temps coming up I know I’ll be opting for indoors.

  15. You’re a mental champ! I had the exact OPPOSITE weather problem and was in the blazing heat of south FL a few weeks ago and so I did my 14 miler on the treadmill. People watching = the best distraction :).

    Have an awesome day!!

  16. I did my long run (8 miles) on the treadmill yesterday. Two more to go before my 1/2. It is mentally hard to do a treadmill run, but I watch a movie and the that helps. That, and the thought of being out in the cold!

  17. I think the most I’ve ever run on a treadmill is 5 miles. I have asthma so it takes me a long time to work up to run that far (even though that doesn’t sound far!). Listening to sermons or podcasts while running helps the time go by so fast for me, even more so than music. Happy Friday!

  18. WOW! Nice. The longest I ever ran on a treadmill was 13 miles, but it was my most unfocused run ever. I watched a movie, but I got off every 3 miles to get a drink of water or go to the bathroom. 😀

Outside is definitely my method of choice, but sometimes it’s just too brutal out there or too dark.

  19. I’m so impressed with your lasting that long on the treadmill! Next time I have to do a long run indoors, I’ll probably try watching a movie!

  20. Hi Tina – I know you love egg sandwiches so I wanted to share one I recently came up with that turned out amazing! I toasted a french baguette (you could also use an english muffin) in the oven with basil pesto on it. In my skillet I mixed eggs with spinach. I then topped my eggs with sharp white cheddar cheese and let it melt for a minute. Once my bread was done toasting I put it all together. In your words, ‘holy yum!’ =)

  21. I ran 24 miles on a treadmill once. I was at my gym and had to switch treadmills about 15 miles into it because the one I was on started to smell like it was smoking. Never a good sign! I pretty regularly will do my 20 mile runs on the treadmill, but if I can go outside, I will!

  22. Hi Tina, I am looking for a good/natural protein powder and want to give SFH a try. I have been using warrior blend – vanilla and I absolutely love it but just want to try something else and mix it up..I get bored easily.
May I ask why did you choose SFH ? how long have you been using it and do you recommend any other brands ?

    1. It’s the best protein powder on the market. It’s made with high-quality ingredients (no weird stuff) and tastes delicious. Definitely check out their website– lots of helpful info there! 😄

  23. Congrats on the long run! I am training for my first half marathon right now and a lot of the time it is too ice to run outside. I have never listened to podcasts but I should start – i think it would definitely help pass the time!

  24. How do you look so pretty and clean after a run?

Even after 10 minutes my face starts getting beat red and my hair looks like beetlejuice no matter how I tied it back.

  25. Great job on your treadmill run!

The longest I ever ran on a treadmill was about 1 hour and 55 minutes! Back in my first semester grad school I ran 13.1 miles on the treadmill to cope with the stress of mid-term exams. I just set it to an easy pace and studied my notes while running!

  26. Ugh! That is a long time on the treadmill. Unfortunately, I think I will be doing a similar thing this weekend. The weather around here does seem to be letting up and I have a long run I need to fit in. I am hoping to put on a movie and run, run, run. I will try to remember my Netflix pw before heading to the gym!

  27. Nice work. You have my sympathy. I ran 3 Boston marathons and trained through some miserable winter weather. Snowbanks, ice and weather so cold that the water in my fuel belt froze. One morning on a scheduled long-run, there was 8 inches of snow on the ground and it was still coming down. I supposed to do 17 miles that week but ended out doing 14 miles on the treadmill. It sucked-out-loud. Really hoping the weather cooperates for you hereonin.

  28. I tried looking for Perfect Bars at my Whole Foods, but I couldn’t find them. They seem to be fairly high calorie – do you eat them as meal replacements or just eat half? Do you order them online or, if you find them at the store, where are they generally located?
I have never enjoyed running on the treadmill & have probably never gone more than a half hour. I’m impressed you were able to make the time fly by!

    1. They almond butter ones, which are my favorite are only 300 calories, so I usually eat the whole thing. I buy them at Whole Foods, but I might start buying them online. They’re in the refrigerated section. I’ve seem them with the bottles beverages and prepared/to-go foods. Hope this helps! 😄

  29. Nice job making it through the run! At my old gym I was able to use their cardio cinema and watch a movie on a giant screen while running in the dark, but alas those days are gone. I have to work on mixing up my workouts on the treadmill now so I dont get too bored.

I love Perfect Bars and always buy all of them from the local Whole Foods. Whoops.

  30. I’ve done up to 16 miles on the treadmill! What can I say I HATE bad weather and if it is too windy/cold/rainy I have no problem hopping on the treadmill 🙂
I just make sure my kindle is loaded up with tv shows or movies in case I don’t have a good wifi connection.

  31. Wow! I can’t believe you managed almost 2 hours on a treadmill. I did 11 miles once and it was so tough mentally! I did 7 on the treadmill this morning and really have to try to just zone out or focus on the show I’m watching. Otherwise I have such a tough time staying motivated!

  32. I have only ran 4 miles on the treadmill before Iosing my mind! An hour and 45 minutes is such a long time! Props to you girl for doing that. I will admit though lately watching Netflix has helped. Music doesn’t do it for me anymore on the treadmill.

  33. Tina, love your blog! For your wrap, was the sweet potato raw? Or did you roast it earlier and then used the leftovers? I’m always trying to find ways to incorporate them in my lunches!

  34. Way to go on your run!! I definitely feel like the treadmill has the potential to make long runs seem even longer, but I can honestly say that I personally have had pretty good experience. The longest I have ever run on the treadmills was just over 10 miles while training for my half marathon and it really wasn’t too bad. I just listened to music, watched a movie, and had some good thinking time to myself 🙂

  35. Longest run on a treadmill was 12 miles. At the 6 mile mark the treadmill stopped (only allows users 60 minutes) So I had to restart the treadmill to do the other 6. I honestly love running on the treadmill…it keeps me in pace. Congrats on your long run! I’m just starting back up into running post pregnancy, I missed it so much! I just bought a jogging stroller and I cannot wait to do some runs with my little guy once spring arrives here in New England!
