The other day, Mal and I were both in bad moods (oh, Gemini mood swings), which, of course, is never a good time. Usually, when one of us is in a crappy mood, the other person helps them snap out of it, but Mal and I kept annoying each other and making little snide comments. We both knew we were being crankypants for no reason, but we just couldn’t get ourselves out of it.

Eventually, I had enough of our bickering and craptastic moods, so I started suggesting little, goofy things we could do to get us out of our funk. I forget what ultimately snapped us out of it, but the situation inspired this blog post.

We all have bad days and experience not-so-great moods (sometimes for no reason!), so I thought this post might help you when you’re having one of those blah days. With that said, here are 10 ways to boost your mood!

1. Swing by Starbucks (or your favorite café) and buy a delicious beverage. My newest obsession is two shots of espresso over ice with coconut milk. (I bring Silk vanilla coconut milk from home in a travel mug.) Another suggestion: Ordering your drink with whipped cream instead of skipping it this time. Mmm, whipped cream… love it.

2. Put some new photos on your fridge or in your office/cube at work. Think about how many times you look at your fridge or walls of your office/cube throughout the day… a lot, right? Put something there that will make you smile! For me, seeing photos of Mal and Murphy always make me happy. (I bought the magnetic frames from CVS for $2 each!)

3. Start a countdown on your calendar to a fun event coming up in your life. Having something to look forward to always cheers me up!

4. Watch this video where a guy surprises his girlfriend with a pug puppy. It’s the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen. It literally brought tears to my eyes. Pug puppies are the cutest.

5. Add some sliced cucumber or fresh (or frozen) berries to your water. It’s such a simple thing to do, but it always makes me a little happier. Plus, it will encourage you to drink more water, which, of course, is a healthy habit!

6. Take a few minutes at Target, CVS, Walgreens, etc. and read some funny greeting cards. Once you’ve had a good laugh, buy one for your best friend and mail it to her/him.

7. Turn on Songza and pick an upbeat and happy playlist, such as Surfing in SoCal, Driving on the Open Road, or Touring a European City. Music is an instant mood-booster! Songza’s playlists are so great. I’m totally obsessed.

8. Make this smoothie or mix up this “cookie dough” for dessert tonight. Both are guaranteed to make your taste buds happy!

9. Skip your usual workout and go for a long walk while listening to a podcast or audiobook. I love listening to the Balanced Bites podcast on long walks with Murphy. It’s such a nice way to get moving and stimulate my brain at the same time. After some light activity and time to unwind, I always return home in a great mood.

10. Start a “happy” board on Pinterest. Some suggestions: baby animals, cute end-of-summer outfits, tropical vacations, inspirational quotes, Ryan Gosling, peanut butter and chocolate desserts”¦ whatever makes you smile! I bet you can guess the theme of my “happy” board!

  1. Perfect tips! I actually had a post planned like this, funny.
I so agree on these little things to help put a little pep into your step. I’m all for the, especially when they include things like doing something for another person. Like buying their coffee, or volunteering. It always makes me feel so much better about myself.

  2. These are such great ideas! I love to bake when I am in a funky mood… working hard is a distraction from my mood and the smell of the kitchen instantly makes me feel better and of course eating something delish is always helpful 🙂

  3. Awwa!! That pug video is adorable. I would add “call my mom” and “bake cookies”!!!!!!! Get my nails done!! Take a nap!!!!! Go to CrossFit, of course 🙂

  4. I definitely try to pamper myself a bit when I’m in a bad mood. I’ll buy a sparkling water, do my nails, and read a magazine or watch trashy tv. Going for a walk with my dog and giving someone a call is helpful, too!

  5. “ryan gosling” on your happy board… haha I love it, brilliant. Although I have Robert Downey Jr. and Bradley Cooper on mine 😉

  6. I love this! I was just thinking about taking my pup on a walk today and moving my run until tomorrow 🙂 And Starbucks sounds pretty fantastic too. Maybe a Friday treat!

  7. I love walking to cheer myself up! If I go to the gym, there’s no guarantee I won’t get past sulking. But when I’m out on a walk in the sunshine with fresh air… I love it. I have to smile! 🙂

  8. Oh! Love that video! Made me cry! I recently made a discovery – jumping rope. Jumping rope instantly picks up bad moods – try jump rope when you’re in a bad mood. I dare you! Also listening to MC Hammer Can’t Touch This. Try being in a bad mood by the end. And sex – just saying. 🙂

  9. Oh! And going to the library! For real – books and dvd’s for free no joke! libraries ALWAYS make me happy. Especially when I see ads for storytime in pajamas – so brings me back to my childhood (I was a big book dork and LOVED the library). The last time I was there the librarian was giving a little boy his first library card..he was so proud! And protective.

  10. My girllfriend wrote a hysterical “kiss off” letter to her boyfriend a million years ago and never sent it. When one of us is in a bad mood we say ” Should we pull out the letter?” and we immediately know what the other means. It never fails to make us laugh just to mention the letter, never mind even reading it!

  11. Love this post! I just moved in with my bf and am totally realizing that when both of us are in a bad mood, it is bad news bears. haha! I think I need to bookmark this post to review in the future 🙂

For me, sometimes I find that I just need to take a nap when I’m in a grumpy mood… I normally wake up happier! Also, reading a good book normally snaps me out of a funk.

  12. I totally have a “happy” Pinterest board — I also keep one filled with inspirational quotes for when I feel really grouchy. Pinterest can be great therapy! 🙂

The CVS card selection is fodder for laughter, too: I like to take the *really* schmaltzy ones and do a little somethin’ I refer to as Dramatic Readings of Bad Hallmark Cards. It embrrasses the shit out of Brandon, though, so I keep it to a minimum — but good Lord is it fun to read one horrific “troubled relationship” card in a Valley girl voice and another in a faux Barry White voice.

  13. Going shopping always puts me in a good mood – or opening all the dresser drawers in my girls’ room and looking at their itty bitty clothing and visualizing what it’ll be like when they get here. That ALWAYS puts me in a good mood.

  14. When you mentioned coconut milk, I was about to flip. “Starbucks has coconut milk?!?!” I’m a little bummed that it doesn’t actually. 🙂 I definitely second Starbucks–or any place that makes you happy, whether it be Starbucks, froyo, ice cream, a local bakery…a little food never hurt anyone, especially if it’s for your mental health!

I also second the Pinterest idea–pictures of cute animals and funny pictures never fail to at least bring a smile to my face, which is half the battle.

  15. My top faves are:

    1) Going for a run 2) Rolling out my yoga mat 3) Reading a great book in my hammock 4) Doing a craft 5) Cleaning out a drawer, closet, room (bonus happy points if I can pack up a box to give to Goodwill) and 6) Playing my Uke 7) Watching a funny movie with my hubby

  16. Had never heard of Songza. OMG! It’s great! Thanks for the boost!
Training for a 1/2 marathon and can’t wait to use it for long runs!

  17. I know that when I’m getting super irritable I need a workout. Long walks with the Ipod are always helpful too. Its hard to come back from a long walk or run still in a bad mood.

That video brought tears to my eyes too, which is a little awkward, since I’m sitting in Starbucks….

  18. AWW I love the video!! 🙂 🙂 SO sweet!

I also love having a calendar with fun things (past and future things) written down! 🙂

  19. Tina i love the idea of bringing coconut milk for your starbucks! How much do you add to the 2 shots of espresso??
