I love girl dates. I need more of them in my life.

Last night, I joined Melissa, Di, and Stephanie for dinner at Fuji 1546, which is one of my favorite sushi restaurants in the area. It’s fresh, (usually) delicious, and so affordable. Usually, sushi is really expensive, but Fuji has rolls on their menu for just $3, and most are in the $5-8 range.

Mal and I used to live right down the street from Fuji, so we’d dine there and order take-out quite a lot. You can check out all of my reviews/blog posts here. There are some old, but really fun posts in the mix!

Dinner started with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc for me. I always complain about Fuji’s wine list, so I don’t know why I always order it. Fuji knows sushi, not wine.

Before we even looked at the menu, our sever brought by a complimentary appetizer. I’m not exactly sure what it included besides fish, peppers, and tempura. I tried a piece, but, sadly, it was somewhat flavorless. The fish was nice and fresh—I actually helped myself to a second piece—but, overall, the appetizer was pretty blah. I think the other ladies agreed.

I ordered two rolls for dinner: Spicy Tuna Maki and Negihama Maki.

As always, the Spicy Tuna Maki was fantastic. I always order it when I’m at Fuji. It’s my favorite. The Spicy Tuna Make is made with tuna, cucumber, and a spicy sauce. So good! I ate it right up!

The Negihama Maki was tasty, but just not my thing. I wanted to try something new, so I ordered this roll because it was made with yellowtail. I guess I don’t like yellowtail. Oops. I probably should have just ordered two Spicy Tuna rolls. Next time!

Girl date!

During dinner, the four of us talked about our favorite blogs. (Of course, right? Don’t bloggers always seem to talk about blogs when they get together?) We had a lot of the same favorites that we read everyday and keep in our readers, which brings me to the Question of the Day.

Meet my new internet girlfriends: Julie, Melissa, and Di!

It was so nice to finally meet these ladies in person after getting to know each of them online. It sort of felt like internet dating!

Tonight, the four of us met for dinner and drinks at Kiku Yama.

For dinner, I ordered two rolls: Vegetable Tempura.

And Spicy Tuna Maki.

I enjoyed both of the rolls– fresh, tasty, delicious. The Vegetable Tempura rolls were massive, so I ended up dissecting the last few and eating them in pieces. I almost choked trying to eat the first two!

I also drank a glass of Chardonnay with dinner. The waitress put it down in front of me, and I may or may not have exclaimed: “YESSSSS!” Apparently, I was in the mood for a glass of wine tonight!

I had a wonderful time this evening. The four of us talked nonstop and shared a ton of laughs. I hope we do it again soon!

Lunch

Today’s lunch was a random mix of leftovers: barley, green beans, Soy-Glazed Fish, and Swiss chard sautéed with olive oil, Garlic Gold, and red pepper flakes, which was so, so, so delicious. I had no idea that I liked Swiss chard so much. On the side, I had some Doritos.

After lunch, I ate two halves of an English muffin with peanut butter and butterscotch chips on top. This treat never gets old.

Undocumented snacks: Blueberry Larabar + Granny Smith apple.

Time for BED! Good night!

Plans for dinner changed a few times tonight. According to my meal plan, chicken was on the menu. I bought a whole chicken with leftovers in mind, but I just wasn’t in the mood to cook it or eat it.

I haven’t cooked a whole chicken since Mal and I first moved in together back in 2006. I made Engagement Chicken after reading about it in Glamour magazine. I know, I’m totally one of those girls, but I figured it couldn’t hurt and the recipe sounded pretty tasty! In fact, the meal turned out so well, I forgot to turn off the oven… for 12 hours! Somehow, I didn’t blow up the house and I was engaged 4 months later. True story!!

Anyway…

Once I nixed chicken for dinner, I suggested Quiznos since I had a bunch of coupons and it’s right down the street.

Or so I thought!?!

Apparently, “Unchained Pizza” moved into Quiznos’ old home. Wicked bummer. So, Mal suggested sushi and we drove off to our favorite take-out place.

While Mal went to order sushi, Murphy and I waited in the car and had a little fun snapping photos. Well, I had fun. He was much more interested in the people walking by on the street.

A little while later, Mal returned to the car with sushi and wine. He read my mind!

I love the wine that Mal picked out. It has all of the things that I like about white wine– and it only cost $11.99 for the bottle!

Dürnberf Grüner Veltliner: Herbal notes typical of the variety, along with distinct minerality and fine white pepper. The palate is juicy and crisp. The characteristic freshness and fruit of the Falkensteiner terroir is impressive – as is the  animated elegance.

I’ve been obsessed with dry, mineral-y white wines lately.

For dinner, Mal picked three maki rolls for us to share.

After dinner, I satisfied my sweet tooth with a Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Scone. It was yummy, but I’m sort of getting sick of them. There’s still one more left in the batch. Maybe I can incorporate it into my oatmeal tomorrow morning? Suggestions welcomed!

Mal and I went out to dinner with our friends Jon and Rose last night. It was fun catching up with them and enjoying a delicious sushi meal!

For dinner, we went to Fuji 1564, which is one of my favorite sushi places in all of Boston… well, just south of Boston. Here’s my first review of Fuji 1564. 

Decor

Fuji’s decor is modern and funky with bright, lively colors and stylish, yet simple furniture. A long bar extends the length of the restaurant, and opens up into a dining area and sushi bar at the back. 

Dinner and Drinks 

We started dinner with a round of cocktails. I ordered a dirty martini with olives, which honestly wasn’t that great. I didn’t finish it. 

As an appetizer, the table split an order of Tempura-Style White Fish, lightly battered stripped bass served with a citrus sauce.

I love tempura, especially on veggies, but I wasn’t sure how tempura would taste on white fish. It ended up being excellent– flavorful, moist, and only lightly battered in tempura. Sometimes there can be too much tempura, which is sort of gross, but the fish was perfectly battered! 

Last night, Fuji had a special on “Party Platters,” which were 26 of pieces of maki and sashimi from a pre-set menu. Roll substitutions were allowed as long as they were the same price, so the “party platter” option narrowed-down the choices for us, but at the same time, allowed us to try some new kinds of sushi that we may have not selected otherwise.  

My favorite rolls of the evening: spicy tuna and caterpillar (eel roll covered with avocado and drizzled with unagi sauce).
