Mal and I went out to dinner with our friends Jon and Rose last night. It was fun catching up with them and enjoying a delicious sushi meal!
For dinner, we went to Fuji 1564, which is one of my favorite sushi places in all of Boston… well, just south of Boston. Here’s my first review of Fuji 1564.

Decor
Fuji’s decor is modern and funky with bright, lively colors and stylish, yet simple furniture. A long bar extends the length of the restaurant, and opens up into a dining area and sushi bar at the back.

Dinner and Drinks
We started dinner with a round of cocktails. I ordered a dirty martini with olives, which honestly wasn’t that great. I didn’t finish it.

As an appetizer, the table split an order of Tempura-Style White Fish, lightly battered stripped bass served with a citrus sauce.
I love tempura, especially on veggies, but I wasn’t sure how tempura would taste on white fish. It ended up being excellent– flavorful, moist, and only lightly battered in tempura. Sometimes there can be too much tempura, which is sort of gross, but the fish was perfectly battered!

Last night, Fuji had a special on “Party Platters,” which were 26 of pieces of maki and sashimi from a pre-set menu. Roll substitutions were allowed as long as they were the same price, so the “party platter” option narrowed-down the choices for us, but at the same time, allowed us to try some new kinds of sushi that we may have not selected otherwise.
My favorite rolls of the evening: spicy tuna and caterpillar (eel roll covered with avocado and drizzled with unagi sauce).

Thanks to a wonderful restaurant recommendation from our friend, Matt, Mal and I ended up eating one of the most amazing sushi dinners of our lives! Almost everything about Blue Ribbon Sushi was outstanding! (We’re still talking about it days later!
) Thanks, Matthew!

The only “negative” part about our dining experience was our wait for a table. We were told beforehand (by our hotel concierge) that Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill did not take reservations, so Mal and I were prepared to wait. Our plan was to have a drink at the bar and just relax. When we arrived, we were told that the wait for a table was about 15-20 minutes. Unfortunately, this time estimate turned into more than an hour! Mal and I were super hungry, but because of our vacation state of mind, we really didn’t mind waiting that long.
While chilling at the bar, Mal and I each ordered a glass of Sauvignon Blanc.

The host at Blue Ribbon felt terrible about our long wait, so he immediately sent a complimentary appetizer to our table. In my opinion, free food makes just about any dining out experience better!
Bonsai Tree
Crabstick, Avocado, Masago & Kaiware Wrapped in Cucumber
The Bonsai Tree appetizer was so unique! The cucumber surrounding the crabstick, avocado, masago, and kaiware was incredibly cool and refreshing– sort of like summer sushi!

I wish I had taken more photos of the decor inside of the restaurant, but it was really crowded, and I always feel like people think I am photographing them!
The Blue Ribbon’s decor was stunning! Dark, solid wood dominated the ceiling, walls, and furniture, and the lighting was mysterious, but also kind of romantic. Mal and I had the option to sit at the large, glowing sushi bar, where we could watch all of the sushi-making action happen, but we opted for a booth in the dining area instead.

For dinner, Mal and I ordered 3 maki rolls to share.
Yasai Maki
Mixed Vegetables

Spicy Tuna
with Tempura Flakes and Cucumber
I never snapped a shot of our 3rd roll by itself, but it was a California roll with Blue Crab (upper right roll on the sushi board).

The sushi was easily out-of-this-world, but the dessert that followed was the food highlight of my weekend! I’m so glad that I let Mal finish off the last few pieces of sushi because I needed plenty of room in my stomach for this divine piece of heaven!

Warm Gingerbread Bread Pudding
with French Vanilla Ice Cream and Caramel Drizzle

This was the BEST dessert that I’ve eaten in a long time! The gingerbread was thick, warm, sweet, and slightly spicy, and the melty ice cream and caramel drizzle were the perfect compliment. Oh my gosh, it was incredibly delectable!

Ahhhhh… tonight was just what I needed: a night home on the couch with my favorite person and good eats. Mal offered to pick-up the sushi on his way home from work, so he chose the rolls and placed the order. From Fuji 1546, he ordered 3 rolls: spicy tuna maki, tempura maki, and negihama maki (yellow fish + scallions). The spicy tuna and tempura maki were both fab. However, I didn’t really care for the negihama maki– it was too “fishy” for me.

One of my favorite things about eating sushi: wasabi!!! I’m a crazy women with it!

Tonight’s ”dessert” was the perfect ending to a perfect sushi take-out dinner! I finally bucked-up and ordered a couple of jars of Barney Butter. I agree with most of you that it’s expensive, and honestly, I wasn’t going to spend the money to order it online, buuuuut, Barney Butter is so frickin’ delicious!!! It’s like no other nut butter I have ever tasted. I just needed to have more!
As soon as I arrived home this evening, I immediately opened one of the jars, and dug a spoon right in. Delish!
After eating dinner, I made myself a wonderful piece of Arnold Double Fiber bread with 2 heaping tablespoons of Barney Butter smeared on top. I’m in love again!
I’m hitting the sack early tonight. Good night, all!
