Q says “thumbs up” to our first stroller bootcamp class! We had a blast!

My friend Kerrie runs an all-women’s bootcamp (FYI: it’s very CrossFit-esque) in Weymouth and she recently added an outdoor stroller bootcamp to her class offerings. I’ve wanted to try it out with Q for weeks now, but I needed to make sure it was okay with his pediatrician first. So when we went to Q’s 2-month check-up last week, I asked our doctor about running with him in the stroller and she was totally cool with it. She even said the stroller bootcamp sounded like a lot fun! And it was! Let me tell you about it”¦

Right now, Kerrie offers two stroller bootcamp classes””one on Wednesday nights at 6:30 PM and one on Saturday mornings at 9:00 AM. The group meets at Pond Meadow Park in Weymouth and the class lasts an hour. You need your own stroller (and baby/toddler/young child), but the instructor provides all of the equipment you might need. On Saturday morning, we used dumbbells for a number of the exercises, so Kerrie gave them to us at the start of class to carry in our strollers. She’ll also use kettlebells, resistance bands, and other fun stuff in her workouts to mix it up for her clients.

Saturday’s workout started with a warm-up of 60-second intervals of walking and jogging with the stroller, which brought us to our first station of the class (there were 3 stations total), where we did various ab exercises on benches.

After that, we were off jogging and sprinting for 60-second intervals on the paved paths of Pond Meadow Park. The paths are mostly flat with a few hills mixed in””and let me tell you, running hills with a stroller (+ 16 pounds of dumbbells) is really tough! What a workout!

At the second station, we did 21-15-9 of Dumbbell Squats and Dumbbell Thrusters followed by 2 hill sprints (without the stroller) between each round. So the rep scheme was 21 Dumbbell Squats, 21 Dumbbell Thrusters, 2 hill sprints, 15 Dumbbell Squats, 15 Dumbbell Thrusters, 2 hill sprints, 9 Dumbbell Squats, 9 Dumbbell Thrusters, 2 hill sprints.

After the second station, we did more intervals of jogging and sprinting with the strollers along the paths and then stopped at the final station where we did 21-15-9 of Jump Squats and Dumbbell Flys followed by a hill sprint with the stroller.

Overall, the class was a challenging workout, but Kerrie offered modifications, including shorter and less steep hills, to the ladies who were newer to fitness.

All in all, it was a fabulous workout! Q and I can’t wait to go to our next stroller bootcamp class!
