• Thanksgiving 2013 & Cyber Monday Deals

    December 2, 2013

    Hi, guys! Happy Cyber Monday!

How was your Thanksgiving? Mine was really great. I loved being home with family and spending time with friends this past weekend. I also barely thought about work, so it was really nice to unplug and not sit in front of my computer. Of course, it’s back to work today, but I’m feeling rested, refreshed, and ready to blog. That said, here’s my recap of Thanksgiving!

This year’s Thanksgiving was so nice and relaxing. We spent the majority of the holiday with Mal’s family (we alternate which family we eat Thanksgiving dinner with each year), but we also stopped by my grandmother’s house for a little while, so we could see my side of the family too.

There was a bigger-than-usual group for Thanksgiving dinner at that Haupert’s this year, which was a lot fun.

    Pumpkin martinis? Hello!

Since we had a big group, everyone chipped in and brought a dish or two to contribute, and we served ourselves buffet-style.

Check out the spread! We had so much amazing food!

I loaded up my plate with so many delicious sides dishes, I barely had room for turkey—but aren’t the side dishes the best part of Thanksgiving? Mal would disagree with me (he’s a turkey lover), but all of the different sides are my favorite part of the meal.

Once everyone served themselves and sat down to eat (Mal and I were at the “kid’s table”), my in-laws said a few words and noted some of the family’s recent accomplishments and things that we are all especially thankful for this year. It was really nice.

I am especially thankful for Mal. He’s the best and makes me laugh everyday… when he’s not making himself laugh (although I laugh at with him then too).

And, of course, I saved room for dessert!

I made Oreo Bars, which came out really well. Julie actually gave me the idea, and I thought they sounded so delicious, so I just winged it with the recipe. You make them just like you would Rice Krispies Treats with melted marshmallows and butter, but instead of Rice Krispies you use crushed up Oreo cookies. Yum! They were definitely a hit with everyone!

After dinner, all of our friends from home came over (a yearly tradition) and we played an epic game of Cards Against Humanity and, of course, laughed a whole lot.

One of our friends found his hat, which had been missing for years, in the hall closet at the Haupert’s house. It was a Thanksgiving miracle we’ll never forget!

Yum, everything looks great, especially the dessert Oreo treats you made and those pumpkin martinis!

    Ashley @ Power, Love, and Self-Discipline December 2, 2013 at 8:11 am

what a great idea with those oreo treats – the possibilities are endless! I made a paleo pumpkin pie that very surprisingly came out fantastic.

Karien @ Running the Race December 2, 2013 at 8:12 am

I agree – those Oreo bars look amazing!

Caitlyn @ City and the Cubicle December 2, 2013 at 8:18 am

I am all about Cyber Monday. Nooo thank you to the crowds and that frenzied, frantic pace.

    Courtney @ Don't Blink. Just Run. December 2, 2013 at 8:30 am

Sounds like an awesome time! I was actually in your neck of the woods for T-day. We were up at my aunt’s in Weymouth for dinner and then over to Holbrook for dessert. That’s always the best part – seeing my family and friends. And you’re absolutely right about the side dishes. I’d rather have a plateful of those over the turkey most of the time!

We did most of our shopping on Amazon on Saturday. Got some great deals and didn’t need to leave the house!

    Ashlee December 2, 2013 at 8:35 am

Now that there’s a grandchild in the mix, there’s a new Thanksgiving tradition so it was a full brunch at my mom’s house, then dinner at the other half’s house. It was really nice though.

Nikki @ grab your kicks December 2, 2013 at 8:55 am

Definitely would rather take advantage of the Cyber Monday deals. No crowds or traffic to deal with! I love online shopping for Christmas presents. It makes shopping less stressful!

Jana @ Happy Wife Healthy Life December 2, 2013 at 8:56 am

My favorite part of dinner are definitely the sides as well! Roasted Brussels sprouts, stuffing, and sweet potatoes are my favs! :)

Those Oreo bars look awesome! My husband would love those!

Alex @ Kenzie Life December 2, 2013 at 8:58 am

Those Oreo bars look so good! Cards Against Humanity is my favorite game too…I think it’s one of the best party games out there! Thanks for the cyber monday codes!

    Katie @ Peace Love & Oats December 2, 2013 at 9:02 am

Your Thanksgiving spread looks delicious! Haha I can’t wait for Thanksgiving next year now, it’s my favorite holiday because I love the part of my family I get to see on Thanksgiving!

On Quest Nutrition they have 25% off their whole site – I definitely just bout some bars! I’m addicted…

    Jackie December 2, 2013 at 9:08 am

I’m keeping an eye out for cyber Monday deals too!

Megan @ Meg Go Run December 2, 2013 at 9:15 am

We played CAH this weekend as well! I see that game is certainly gaining popularity, which makes me feel better and that maybe I’m not the only horrible person in the world hehe!

    Jenny December 2, 2013 at 9:21 am

    Definitely prefer Cyber Monday!!!

And I agree the sides are the best part of Thanksgiving. :)

    Dana December 2, 2013 at 9:26 am

That spread of food looks amazing!!! We love that card game and only played it once earlier in the year. And thank you for reminding me about this game…I need to buy this for us for xmas! ;)

    Shel@PeachyPalate December 2, 2013 at 9:32 am

I’m all for shopping online! Hate the stress of shopping when there’s big sales on! Those oreo bars sound amazing!!!

Elizabeth @ Positive Change December 2, 2013 at 9:32 am

I am just like Mal I love the Turkey! Best part of the Thanksgiving was getting a call from my mom on the way home from my Aunts on Thanksgiving to stop at Target at 10pm to shop! We NEVER would have done this, but it was a blast! I like to shop in the stores because I like to shop local and at big box stores I like to see the actually thing I am looking at!

    Lisa December 2, 2013 at 9:48 am

Black Friday and me do not get along. And I live in Canada, where it isn’t even that busy…so that means Cyber Monday is quite the gem. Even though online shops kind of did the Black Friday thing too. Pretty sure I spent a bit too much money already/

    FitBritt@MyOwnBalance December 2, 2013 at 9:49 am

Looks like you had a great Thanksgiving! I would personally rather shop Cyber Monday because I hate crowds!

    zahra December 2, 2013 at 10:01 am

You’re Thanksgiving food looked delicious. What did you bring?

    Sara @ LovingOnTheRun December 2, 2013 at 10:06 am

The best part of my Thanksgiving was so quality time with the husband and getting to relax. We have a crazy couple of weeks coming up so I am ready to at least a little bit of relaxation before it begins!

    Abi@AbsofSteel December 2, 2013 at 10:13 am

I agree, the sides are always better than the actual turkey. I could probably live off of stuffing and mashed potatoes

Annie Atherton December 2, 2013 at 10:14 am

Forgot to post the cyber monday code for Reebok… I think it is CYBER30

    Tina December 2, 2013 at 10:24 am

Miranda @ Lovely Wife Lovely Life December 2, 2013 at 10:20 am

Um HELLO Oreo bars!??!????! Best part of my Thanksgiving was cooking the stuffing & pie all by myself. I’m at my first year of college this year so I didn’t have mom helping- and it turned out perfect! My fiance loved it :D

Sanaz @Run for Cake December 2, 2013 at 10:26 am

Looks like you had a great Thanksgiving! I wish it was Thanksgiving every week! I hope I can get back to the grind today and not shop until I drop online! Thanks for the codes. :)

    Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat December 2, 2013 at 10:55 am

All that food…yum! My Thanksgiving was wonderful! I ran the turkey trot in the a.m., then went over to my parents’ for dinner. There was 13 of us total. It was so great to spend time with the family and eat some delicious food!

Sim @ The Micro Harvest December 2, 2013 at 10:57 am

Sounds like a wonderful Thanksgiving! We hosted our first Thanksgiving this year and had Tim’s fam and my fam all together in our home. My favorite part was feeling like one big family – a lot of people who I am thankful for under one roof!

Ashley @ Snow Cream and Syrup December 2, 2013 at 11:04 am

    Pumpkin Martinis!! That sounds good.

Right now I’m shopped out. Plus, there aren’t a lot of super enticing holiday discounts, it seems. Maybe I’m looking in the wrong places… but nothing above and beyond what most people offer the rest of the year. I’m happy just to chill at home either way. :)

    Bethany December 2, 2013 at 11:28 am

My best part of Thanksgiving was the stuffing and gravy. I also took my pup for a long walk and got caught up on the DVR. I shopped on Friday and Saturday. And it was not too bad.

    Ashley December 2, 2013 at 11:31 am

The best part of my Thanksgiving was definitely the relaxing (AND RUNNING) with family :)

Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries December 2, 2013 at 12:13 pm

Glad you all had a nice Thanksgiving! I definitely need to try out those Oreo bars you made. Those sound right up my alley! And I’m with ya – I’m all about the side dishes!

I’d much rather shop Cyber Monday from the comfort of my couch rather than fighting the traffic and crowds. :) Thanks for sharing the Cyber Monday deals!

    Jamie@FabulouslyFit December 2, 2013 at 12:25 pm

The Oreo bars look delicious! Cyber Monday is my favorite way to save- no crowds AND you get to beat the cold weather by staying indoors!

    Ashley @ BrocBlog December 2, 2013 at 12:42 pm

Ive been doing way, way too much shopping this year so I decided to take a step back from thanksgiving deals.

joelle (on a pink typewriter) December 2, 2013 at 12:56 pm

LOVE Cards Against Humanity.. not for the faint of heart, and excellent after a couple holiday cocktails. ;)

    Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl December 2, 2013 at 1:02 pm

Those Oreo bars are genius! I bet they were SO fab!

Sammy @ Peace Love and Ice Cream December 2, 2013 at 1:25 pm

What a happy Thanksgiving!! :) We played CAH with our friends last month and we were all dying laughing!! It was good fun!
Those Oreo bars are making me seriously drool! So yum!
And I’ve seen that list of the secret Starbucks drinks and I want to print it and carry it with me!! LOL

    Tina December 2, 2013 at 1:38 pm

    That’s a great idea!!

Sally @ sweat out the small stuff December 2, 2013 at 1:30 pm

The best part of Thanksgiving for me was the fresh whipped cream my sister in law made. Well it was a tie actually. My cousin adopted a little toy poodle who was a puppy mill rescue. This little guy was so sweet. He finally gets to live the life all dogs should have. It was so heartwarming to see my cousin’s two girls play and bond with their new furry family member.
I am not into the whole Black Friday frenzy. But I don’t mind Cyber Monday. I never look for deals for gifts. But I do look for deals for things I want for myself. =)
My friend makes cake pops with crushed Oreos and cream cheese…..They are delicious.

mary @ minutes per mile December 2, 2013 at 1:38 pm

i ran a turkey trot on thanksgiving, which was a great kickoff to the day :)

    christine December 2, 2013 at 1:56 pm

Target.com also has some FANTASTIC Cyber Monday deals! Clothing, electronics, home decor and more! #mykindofholiday

    Anna @ Fitness à la Anna December 2, 2013 at 1:56 pm

Those Oreo bars are brilliant! I am totally trying those out soon!! I’ve been wanting to bake something yummy for my roomies ;)

    Chelsea@BigBitesLittleBudget December 2, 2013 at 2:39 pm

Those oreo bars look delicious! I am collecting holiday treat recipes that are simple to make as gifts. I am making my usual english toffee and something else this year. I may have to try those bars!!

    kate d. December 2, 2013 at 3:20 pm

You are glowing in that picture with Mal and Murphy! Congrats!

    Nicola December 4, 2013 at 9:17 am

@kate d.: Tina are you pregnant? It seems so!

Suzanne @ Mix it Mom December 2, 2013 at 3:31 pm

I wish I could say the Cyber Monday deals are awesome but honestly, those are the same % off that I got in emails last week…and the week before that…and before that. I am convinced it is just a big marketing ploy!!!

Lauren @ Focused To Be Fit December 2, 2013 at 3:48 pm

I shopped a little today – Perfumania has 35% off with free shipping – but most of my shopping was and is always done on Black Friday!

    Caitlin December 2, 2013 at 4:12 pm

Cards Against Humanity is pretty fun especially after a few drinks! I totally agree that side dishes are the best part of Thanksgiving, and the Oreo brownies look great too. I must know what is that green mold on your dinner table spread, is that JellO?!

    Tina December 2, 2013 at 4:13 pm

    Haha! It is! 😄

    Emily @SinfulNutrition December 2, 2013 at 6:20 pm

@Caitlin: I was thinking the same thing! That makes me want to have a tupperware party ASAP.

    honeywhatscooking December 2, 2013 at 5:41 pm

OMG, I’m officially stalking you today. LOL! I love reading your blog. Your Thanksgiving sounds so nice, I gotta check out that game you played. I loved the pics by the fireplace and those PUmpkin Martinis are to die for. You should do a post on that, if you don’t mind. I’d love to know. :-)
Also, I know you love CrossFit, but I really love that you are blogging more about other stuff in your life.. it’s just a fun read that brings a smile to my face.

    Eating 4 Balance December 2, 2013 at 7:18 pm

Um… I’m pretty sure you need to share the measurements for those brownie bars. I think those would be a big hit with my friends and family! :)

Great picture of you, Murphy and Mal!

    kyla December 2, 2013 at 8:10 pm

    What helps Obama unwind?
    Michelle Obama’s arms

    kyla December 2, 2013 at 8:11 pm

That was played once during an epic CAH game and naturally won that round.

    Katie December 2, 2013 at 8:20 pm

My mom’s cranberry relish is always my favorite part of Thanksgiving (and Christmas dinner!) My parents have that exact same china – too funny!

    Livi December 2, 2013 at 9:32 pm

I love Cards against Humanity— the best!!!!!!!

    Julie December 3, 2013 at 1:28 am
