• Spirit Dogs

    November 27, 2013

Good morning! Anyone else working a half day today?

CNC is closing early today and its two employees (Murphy and me) are spending the rest of the afternoon cooking, cleaning, and packing in preparation for our journey home to spend time with our families over the next few days. (Oh, Mal is coming too.)

Let’s do a quick recap of yesterday’s eats, so we can talk about “spirit dogs.” (I know. You’re super excited.)

Quick and easy breakfast: two waffles with almond butter and a little bit of maple syrup + a sliced pear on the side. Easy, delicious, nutritious.

    IMG_8826 (600x450)

And I enjoyed a homemade almond milk latte!

    IMG_8830 (600x600)

Mid-morning, I made some Stuffed Cinnamon Cream Cheese French Toast with maple syrup for an upcoming post that I am writing. Of course, I needed to sample the recipe.

    IMG_8833 (600x450)

After that, I headed to the gym to do my favorite treadmill workout ever. I planned do the running workout, but at the last minute, I decided to do the walking one because I remembered how hard it was. If you don’t hold onto the siderails, it’s really challenging!

    IMG_8836 (450x600)

Have I mentioned how much I love these Cord Tacos? Because I do.

    IMG_8837 (600x450)

When I got home from the gym, I made a salad with goodies from the Whole Foods salad bar, romaine lettuce, and balsamic vinaigrette.

    IMG_8839 (600x450)

After lunch, I ate a ridiculous amount of trail mix. I seriously ate half the bag. Why is trail mix so good?!?

    IMG_8844 (600x600)

Mal and I went out for dinner last night—nothing fancy just grabbed a meal at a local bar/restaurant. (Neither of us felt like cooking.)

We started with fried pickles, which were served with a delicious spicy thousand island sauce.

    IMG_8873 (600x450)

And then I had the French onion soup for dinner, which was also really good.

    IMG_8875 (600x450)

Mal and I ended up bumping into some of our CrossFit friends at the restaurant, so we hung out for a couple of hours and chatted with them at the bar.

When we got home, I finished off the evening with some Moose Munch. (I can’t have this stuff in the house. It’s like I’m on a mission to EAT IT ALL.)

    IMG_8831 (600x450)

    Ok, so sprit dogs…

Anyone else watch last week’s episode of Parks & Recreation? If not, April tried to match each Parks & Rec employee with the dog that was most like them (aka “spirit dog”). Donna actually ended up being a cat because not everyone has a spirit dog.

A couple of examples of spirit dogs…

When the episode was over, Mal and I started talking about our spirit dogs. I immediately said he was a Boston terrier because they’re active, high-energy, and love people.

Mal said my spirit dog is a pug because I love food so much. Haha! He’s right, and I’m also semi-neurotic, obsessive, and goofy just like pugs. There are a few pug characteristics, however, like being super lazy (I can’t sit still) that don’t totally fit me, but I think a pug could be my spirit dog. And, of course, I love them so much.

Yum! That french toast looks so good, I’ve been wanting to recreate some myself, and now I’m inspired!

    RFC November 27, 2013 at 7:49 am

A gazelle. Long legs, loves to run, looks pretty awkward when doing so. 😉

    Happy Thanksgiving !!

    RFC November 27, 2013 at 7:50 am

@RFC: p.s., totally not a dog or a cat. I don’t read directions well before the caffeine has kicked in…

    Tina November 27, 2013 at 8:06 am

Haha! A gazelle works! Happy Thanksgiving! :)

    Nikki November 27, 2013 at 8:50 am

I have absolutely no answer on the “spirit dog” question – this comment just made me laugh really hard. Pre-caffeinated thinking is not advisable. :)

Sanaz @Run for Cake November 27, 2013 at 7:56 am

I love the laminated workout card. I always take an index card or just use my phone but this is genius! The headphone taco is genius. Its one of those things that makes me think, why didn’t I create that? :)
So happy you get a 1/2 day. There is so much to do to prepare for Thanksgiving we all should only have to work until noon! I hope you have a great (productive) day.

Katie @ Peace Love and Oats November 27, 2013 at 7:56 am

Hmm that’s hard! I’d want to say golden retriever but I don’t think I’m quite that happy and energetic ALL the time. I’m not sure I’ve met my spirit dog yet!

    Jenn November 27, 2013 at 7:59 am

Thank you for sharing the promo codes. I hope you and your family have a Happy Thanksgiving!

    Christine November 27, 2013 at 8:02 am

That’s one of my favorite walking treadmill workouts! I ripped it out of a Fitness magazine years ago and it’s my go to when I want to be active but I’m not up to doing a running workout.

Katie @ Talk Less, Say More November 27, 2013 at 8:07 am

No half day for me and I’ll probably do some work Friday too. That’s the one thing about working from home, I don’t feel like I can ever NOT be working, especially if it’s a week day…

    Tina November 27, 2013 at 8:15 am

Same here. I always feel like I should be working.

Kim @ Hungry Healthy Girl November 27, 2013 at 8:13 am

Your cinnamon French toast recipe looks like it’s going to be a good one! Love, love, love fried pickles. It’s been so long since I’ve had some. I had a half day yesterday and I’m off today. Wahoo!!! Enjoy your day and have a VERY happy Thanksgiving!

    Tina November 27, 2013 at 8:15 am

    Thank you! You too! :)

mary @ minutes per mile November 27, 2013 at 8:15 am

omg, the headphone tacos are perfect! just bought one for my husband’s christmas gift. we have headphone cords everywhere and ours always get tangled together, so this is wonderful. Thanks!!!

    Diana November 27, 2013 at 8:31 am

I am not so sure what my spirit dog would be. My husband would be a St. Bernard though. I may be a spirit cat. Ha!

    Jackie November 27, 2013 at 8:41 am

    Happy thanksgiving eve!

    Tina November 27, 2013 at 8:53 am

    Thanks! You too!

    Maureen November 27, 2013 at 8:43 am

That pug shaming link was hilarious! I kept thinking “they can’t get any better/worse,” but that LAST one! Oh man!

    Linda @ running4two November 27, 2013 at 8:48 am

I loooove stuffed french toast! I make mine in my panini maker and it works great. :-) Yours looks amazing!

    Shel@PeachyPalate November 27, 2013 at 8:49 am

Awesome treadmill workout!!! I assume when you say 1% incline it’s number one on the incline on the treadmill etc??? Not sure if it’s different on the ones here but your screen looks similar!

    Ashlee November 27, 2013 at 8:56 am

I’m really not sure what my spririt dog would be, something low maintenance though.

Also, next time you make hot chocolate, use almond coconut milk… holy pants it’s awesome!

    FitBritt@MyOwnBalance November 27, 2013 at 9:06 am

Oh I loved this episode! It was hilarious. I’m not sure what my spirit dog would be but it’s a fun game!

    Katie @ running4cupcakes November 27, 2013 at 9:09 am

oh goodness – that french toast looks amazing!! Can’t wait for the recipe. :) I love Parks and Rec – such a great show! I have to work today, but then I have Thursday and Friday off – woo hoo!!

Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries November 27, 2013 at 9:25 am

Oh my, that stuffed French toast looks soooo good! Looking forward to the recipe! And I feel ya on the trail mix! That stuff is so addicting. Love the sweet + salty combo!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Tina! :)

    Maeve November 27, 2013 at 9:52 am

The stuffed french toast looks awesome…can’t wait for the recipe.

What brand are the waffles? I like frozen waffles sometimes for breakfast and would prefer to buy a brand that is a little healther the Eggo.

    Happy Thanksgiving!
    Safe Travels

    Tina November 27, 2013 at 10:13 am

    I buy Vans waffles.

    Abi@AbsofSteel November 27, 2013 at 9:53 am

haha, I love parks and rec. That episode was particularly great, not sure what my spirit dog would be though

    Jennifer November 27, 2013 at 10:05 am

Ha! I had a homemade almond milk latte for breakfast as well- using my new Nespresso machine that arrived last night! What a beautiful little machine- thank you again for the great giveaway!

    Sara @ LovingOnTheRun November 27, 2013 at 10:06 am

That french toast looks amazing! I can’t wait to read the recipe!!

    Sara @ fitcupcaker November 27, 2013 at 10:06 am

How did you make your homemade latte? Also That french toast looks ridic!! I think you have some laughing cow cinnamon cream cheese in there!

    Jenny November 27, 2013 at 10:19 am

    LOVE the pug shaming!! lol

    Caitlin November 27, 2013 at 10:39 am

I’m not sure what my spirit dog would be! I love pugs so I would first instinct go with that but I don’t know if I’m wide eyed or lazy enough to be a pug 😛 I’ll have to think on this.
I’m so excited to see that stuffed french toast recipe. I’m guessing you’re going to use Laughing Cow Cinnamon Cream Cheese? That stuff is SO good spread on an apple. I imagine it’d be amazing on a pear too, and that pear you had for breakfast has given me a craving. It’s been eons since I had a nice, crisp pear!
Yummm fried pickles. I love sharing an app and then having something small like soup for dinner! Enjoy your 1/2 day, Tina/Mal/Murph!

Ashley @ Snow Cream and Syrup November 27, 2013 at 10:46 am

Fried pickles!!!! Those look amazing. I need to figure out how to make those gluten free.

Happy Thanksgiving – enjoy the day off :)

    Kaylynne November 27, 2013 at 10:54 am

I totally googled online quizzes to determine my spirit dog after I read this…it also made me wish I was at home with my dogs instead of at work. We have a Boston Terrier that looks just like the one you pictured! According to a quiz I’m a Golden Retreiver…

    Livi November 27, 2013 at 11:02 am

everyone has been telling me i NEED to try some fried pickles!! those look delicious!

    Ganeeban November 27, 2013 at 11:32 am

Seriously, Trail Mix is the BEST. I could do without the raisins though 😉 Happy Thanksgiving Eve!

Jenn @ Fairest Run of All November 27, 2013 at 11:33 am

My spirit dog is a greyhound. They tend to be lazy until something catches their interest and then BAM! They’re off and running!

(I am also part cat, because I hate change and I’m not always too sure about strangers.)

Alex @ Kenzie Life November 27, 2013 at 12:12 pm

That french toast looks like everything I’ve ever wanted :) I can’t wait for the recipe! I love Parks and Rec but haven’t watched any episodes this season. I’m excited to see the spirit dog one! Have a great Thanksgiving!

michelle kim November 27, 2013 at 12:16 pm

I might be a beagle because I have lots of energy, love people, and like to eat.

    Elisabeth November 27, 2013 at 12:58 pm

    I think I’m probably a golden retriever 😉

joelle (on a pink typewriter) November 27, 2013 at 1:09 pm

Ha! I’m not sure what my spirit dog is…. maybe a beagle? I’ve always had a soft spot for Snoopy. 😉

    Ashley November 27, 2013 at 1:23 pm

I have a lab and I think Hal and I are very similar, if that’s not weird to say that I think Im the same as my dog. But we are both high energy and love running but sometimes enjoy just chillin or stealing food from people.

Christine (The Raw Project) November 27, 2013 at 1:26 pm

The French toast looks divine, now I wanna make a vegan version of that.

    Erika November 27, 2013 at 2:13 pm

Ahhhh I love the pug shaming!

I’m a trail mix lover but I hate raisins. I always have a bag nearby so I can throw away the raisins.

Going to try that treadmill workout this weekend!

    Annie @ herightfit.com November 27, 2013 at 3:28 pm
Alison @ Daily Moves and Grooves November 27, 2013 at 3:28 pm

I might just try that walking workout sometime very soon! That trail mix looks dangerously addictive too. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Miranda @ Lovely Wife Lovely Life November 27, 2013 at 4:43 pm

Love all your food! That french toast looks to die for 😀 I love walking treadmill workouts! Sometimes they’re harder than actually running!

    Emily C. November 27, 2013 at 5:26 pm

It’s so funny that you posted about this today! My boyfriend has been making multiple comments about how me and my St. Bernard act so similar sometimes, particularly today. Apparently we both wake up too early, like the snow, demand attention, act silly, and like to use him as a pillow lol

    Liz November 27, 2013 at 6:43 pm

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Can’t wait for the French Toast recipe — looks delicious!

    Jan @ Sprouts n Squats November 27, 2013 at 9:04 pm

I definitely think of myself as more of a cat but with some dog traits too :)

I hope you Mal and Murph enjoy your time off!

kathy gomez November 28, 2013 at 1:23 am

Great info. Lucky me that I discovered your blog by chance. I have saved as a favorite for later! Keep sharing 

    Jodea @ chillichocolatelove.com November 28, 2013 at 1:48 am

Ha! I think I’m a Chihuahua. Small and feisty and a bit fussy. But also ver affectionate and loyal.

    Chrissy November 28, 2013 at 9:35 am

I have to say my cat Digit is my spirit cat. We are so much alike, my boyfriend says all the time he’s just like his mommy. We both eat our food way too fast, are super jumpy, and flip out if our bathroom privacy is invaded on.

Lindsay @ Shiny Love Affair November 28, 2013 at 3:16 pm

I need me some cord tacos! They always become a jumbled mess in my purse. Also, that almond milk latte looks incredible. One of my favourite drinks to make at home. If only Starbucks would start giving almond milk as an option!

    Christine@munchkinmumbles November 28, 2013 at 3:57 pm

That French toast looks amazing! Can’t wait for the recipe! Spirit dog would have to be the Goldiepoo/Labradoodle. High energy, loyal, happy, and love to have fun!

    Colleen November 29, 2013 at 1:56 pm

This inspired much internal debate! Fun! I think I’m an Akita. I love ‘my’ people, but not so much people outside my circle. I’m stubborn as heck, and fairly athletic but not insanely high energy. Interestingly, I’m not a dog I’d ever choose to have!

Niki Mosier December 5, 2013 at 4:54 pm

Mmm! Waffles! That dog is just too darn cute!
