Our first morning in Cabo was pretty low-key, but by the afternoon, Mal and I were in the full swing of things with a hot, sweaty, and sandy WOD on the beach!

Breakfast

Mal and I both woke up hungry, so we immediately headed to Bar Esquina for breakfast. (FYI: The restaurant prepared a special Paleo menu for our group for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and all of the meals are included in the cost of the trip.)

Bar Esquina has an amazing little coffee shop attached to the main restaurant, which serves all sorts of espresso drinks, pastries, smoothies, and freshly pressed juice. They even have almond milk, which pretty much everyone on our trip was pumped about.

On our first morning in Cabo (and every morning since), I ordered the “Detox Green Juice.” It’s spinach, cucumber, green apple, parsley, and celery, and it’s, oh, so delicious.

I’ve also drank a couple of decaf iced almond milk lattes since I’ve been here. They’re heavenly.

After Mal and I ate breakfast and grabbed coffee, we headed out to explore the area. A couple of the people on the trip weren’t arriving until later that afternoon, so we had the morning free to do what we wished.

The beach is a quick 5-minute walk from the hotel, so we went to check it out.

Beautiful!

Mal and I also took a quick swim where I may or may not have got my ass kicked by the ocean. I got caught up in the undertow, fell down, and flailed around like a complete goober in about a foot of water. I got water up my nose and almost lost my bathing suit because it was so full of sand. As you might remember, I’m terrified of the ocean, so I sort of panicked when all of this was happening. I thought I was going to be swallowed up by the sea, but as soon as I saw Mal sitting on the beach laughing hysterically at me””like pissing his pants watching me roll around and fight my way through the waves””I realized I wasn’t in any danger. After that, I managed to get myself onto the beach and join Mal in his amusement. Haha! Ocean 1, Tina 0.

After the beach, Mal and I headed to the swim up bar at the hotel pool.

The bartender told us it was 2 for 1 mojitos, so we hopped on that deal and got our drink on. Hey, it was 5 o’clock somewhere!

Lunch

A little while later, we headed inside for lunch. I went with the chicken lettuce cups, which were served with lemon juice, cilantro, and all sorts of veggies. They were so good””flavorful and incredibly fresh. They’re definitely a big hit with everyone on the trip!

Mal and I also shared an order of beet chips with guacamole and salsa. The beet chips are incredible, especially with the guac, and I’ve housed them at every meal since.

Workout

A few hours later, we met the group for the trip: Ty (coach and owner of Destino Retreats), Josh (coach and owner of Courage Performance), and five women, who are all about my age and from various parts of the country. Including Mal and me, there are nine people total.

Our first workout of the trip was a beach WOD. It was meant to ease us into the activity of the week, but it was still pretty tough. It took us about 20 minutes to complete and started with sprints in the sand””basically, five suicides using nearby roped-poles to measure the distance.

IMG_3094 (800x600)

Then, there were 10 pistols on each leg while balancing on a pole.

Then, 4 suicide sprints in the sand.

Followed by 40 lateral jumps over the rope.

IMG_3102 (800x600)

Then, another 3 suicide sprints in the sand.

IMG_3096 (800x600)

Followed by 30 squat jumps over the rope.

IMG_3106 (800x600)

These were so tough because we needed to get LOW before jumping over the rope.

IMG_3108 (800x600)

Next was 30 facing-the-water Burpees.

IMG_3110 (800x600)

And, finally, 20 over-under passes of the roped buoys out in the ocean.

IMG_3112 (800x600)

The whole WOD:

  • 5 suicide sprints in the sand
  • 20 pistols on a pole (10 each leg)
  • 4 suicide sprints in the sand
  • 40 lateral jumps over a rope
  • 3 suicide sprints in the sand
  • 30 squat jumps over a rope
  • 20 facing-the-water Burpees
  • 20 over-unders of the roped buoy

It was definitely a fun one!

After the beach WOD, we headed back to the hotel and a few of us hit the outdoor pool for some cocktails.

Dinner

A short while later, we headed to dinner at Bar Esquina. Once again, we enjoyed a delicious Paleo menu. The menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner have stayed the same all week, but there are a ton of different options, so you can try a number of dishes and not get bored of the same old, same old.

IMG_3123 (600x800)

I ordered the Catch of the Day, which was red snapper, and it came with grilled veggies and papaya relish. It was awesome!

Cheers to a fabulous week ahead!
