• Summer is the Season to…

    June 21, 2013

Happy first day of summer, friends!!!

    happy summer pug

I love summer. A lot. I also love today because it’s the longest day of the year. I just really enjoy having those extra hours of sunlight each day. It’s kind of cool when you look outside at 8:30 at night and it’s still kind of light out, right? I feel like I never want to sleep at this time of year!

    Eats & Treats

So, I’m still feeling out how food is going to fit into CNC, but I snapped a few pics of some of the delicious things I’ve enjoyed over the past couple of days. Here are some highlights:

    Sweet potato puffs!

    pug sweet potato tots

These ones are actually from Alexia. As you might remember, I’m obsessed with the sweet potato tots from Trader Joe’s. I always stock up on them when I shop there, but I haven’t had a chance to get there lately, so I bought these Alexia ones at Stop & Shop the other day.

The Alexia sweet potato puffs are really tasty, but different from the ones from Trader Joe’s. The Alexia sweet potato puffs are a little smaller in size and crispier. They also seemed less greasy and more “puffier” than the ones from Trader Joe’s. I actually think I like the ones from TJ’s better, but these are definitely a delicious option. I will surely buy them again!

Also delicious… Passion Fruit iced tea from Starbucks!

I’m taking a break from iced coffee for a little bit (trying to heal my colon), so I’m giving iced tea a whirl. The Passion Fruit (with a half pump of sweetener) is really good. It might just be my new summer drink!

    starbucks passfruit iced tea

    Freshly pressed green juice!

I’ve been loading up my juice with lots of leafy greens (with apple and orange or lemon) with the hope of getting some iron into my system to prevent anemia. My insides have been bleeding (a lot) for almost 3 months straight now, so I’m doing everything I can to keep my levels up. Juice seems to be a great way to get a lot of vitamins at once without a lot of “roughage.”

    green juice

Peanut Butter Cup cupcake in a jar!

Oooh, yes! My friend Kerrie got me this for my birthday yesterday, and holy frickin’ yum! Decadent chocolate cake with peanut butter and chocolate buttercream, drizzled with peanut butter and topped with Reese’s peanut butter cups. Whoa. Happy birthday to me! I love that it’s a cupcake in a jar. Why is everything more adorable when it’s in a jar?

    Question of the Day

The folks at Rue La La recently asked me for a contribution to their piece called “Summer is the Season To…”. Check out what I had to say and, just for fun, feel free to play along in the comment section.

That cupcake in a jar looks insane!! Happy first day of summer.

    Cate June 21, 2013 at 8:09 am

Happy belated birthday! Looks like you had fun celebrating. Sweet potato tots are soooo good! I love the Starbucks iced tea with a splash of lemonade. Soooo good! Happy summer! Yay!

Beth @ Mangoes and Miles June 21, 2013 at 8:19 am

“It’s kind of cool when you look outside at 8:30 at night and it’s still kind of light out, right? I feel like I never want to sleep at this time of year!” –> ehh, I can’t pretend I’m a huge fan of the longer daylight hours. It interferes with my granny sleep schedule…and then I’m sleep deprived…and then I’m cranky. 😛

All of your food looks fantastic! I’ve only had sweet potato tots at Sonic, but I’d love to get my hands on some healthier versions. 🙂

    Amy June 21, 2013 at 8:21 am

    1) it’s Rue La La not Ru La La
    2) aren’t fried potato puffs that are inevitably loaded with salt, fat and calories the antithesis of healthy living?

    Tina June 21, 2013 at 8:32 am

    1) Oops! Thanks!
    2) Healthy living is about moderation and enjoying not-so-healthy foods on occasion! 🙂

    Shel@PeachyPalate June 21, 2013 at 8:26 am

Oh my god that cupcake looks crazy good!!! Have you dipped in to it yet??

    Ashlee June 21, 2013 at 8:33 am

Summer is the season to do things in or near cold water!

And you should try the Starbuck’s Hibiscus chiller (if you haven’t already). I really like that one, especially when it’s warm.

    Tina June 21, 2013 at 8:36 am

I heard that was really good! I will try it next time! Thank you for the suggestion! 🙂

Charlotte @ Commitness to Fitness June 21, 2013 at 8:42 am

yay for summer!! i’m so jealous of that juicer btw, and that cupcake jar is adorable!!

    SarahSom June 21, 2013 at 8:47 am

I too LOVE the passion tea. Try it with a pump of raspberry (if you haven’t already, that is)– it is SO good. When/if coconut comes back around it’s fabulous with a pump of coconut too!

    Tina June 21, 2013 at 8:59 am

    That sounds delicious!!

    Jackie June 21, 2013 at 9:05 am

Summer is the season to… GET A TAN 🙂 I need to!!

Sarah @ Blonde Bostonian June 21, 2013 at 9:10 am

LOVE tater tots! Just picked some up the other day at the grocery store and wasn’t a fan (grocery store brand). I didn’t know TJ’s makes them so I’ll have to pick some up!

Jen @ Jens Best Life June 21, 2013 at 9:26 am

Summer is the season to get outdoors! So many things that we do inside can be done outside and I think it’s so incredibly refreshing and recharging to eat, do work, or read a book outside 🙂

    Jess H. June 21, 2013 at 9:28 am

Thank you for participating in our feature, Tina! Happy Summer Solstice! (Personally, I love this time of year – I’m a night owl, and I love that while it’ll still be hot, it won’t be as hot for as long every day.)

    Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat June 21, 2013 at 9:34 am

Yay…I’m so happy summer is here too! It’s by far my favorite time of year!

I need to get some of those sweet potato puffs! And OMG…PB Cupcake in a jar! That sounds amazing!

Summer is the season to…grill every weekend!

Jeanie @Breakfast for Dinner June 21, 2013 at 9:38 am

Summer is the season to walk my dog after dinner, grill delicious meats and veggies and relax the day away on Cape Cod!

    Beth Sheridan @sugarcoatedsheridans June 21, 2013 at 9:39 am

Oh this is like my most favoritest day of the year…LOVE these long daylight hours!!

    Lisa June 21, 2013 at 9:40 am

It’s blowing my mind it’s already Summer. Craziness.
Summer is time for fresh berries and drinks outside with friends.
And that PB cupcake in a jar looks all kinds of amazing! Oh my.

Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries June 21, 2013 at 9:48 am

It makes me feel better that it’s technically only the first day of summer. Typically I think of the first day of summer on Memorial Day weekend, so to me, it has already seemed like summer is FLYING by which makes me sad! I love summer, so I’m glad to hear it’s only beginning. 🙂

Summer is the season to… Travel, drink lots of smoothies, eat ice cream, go swimming, stay up late, go hiking, barbecue, eat lots of fresh fruit.

    Tiff @ Love, Sweat, & Beers June 21, 2013 at 10:04 am

I’m not normally a huge cupcake person, but WOW… want that!

    Sophie @ life's philosophie June 21, 2013 at 10:09 am

summer is the season to grill, run, hike, camp, make s’mores, eat watermelon, drink watermelon and lie around and do nothing.

    Marie June 21, 2013 at 10:09 am

That cupcake thing is adorable. Do you know where I can find a recipe?
Also, Murphy really makes me want to adopt a pug. I used to work in a vet clinic, and one day a lady dropped her pug inside the door with a note saying that the dog was diabetic and she “couldn’t handle” taking care of her. It was my responsibility to give the dog her insulin shots during the day and I fell in love with her! She was SO spunky. I had a dog and couldn’t keep her, but the Pug Rescue group took her in. I’m sure they wouldn’t let her go to anything but a good home. Anyway, Murph seems pretty spunky too, so I’m wondering if it’s a pug thing!

    Tina June 21, 2013 at 10:19 am

My friend bought it for me from a local cupcake shop. I linked to it, so maybe you can contact the company?

Mary Slagel June 21, 2013 at 10:15 am

Try the mix of passion fruit lemonade next time you stop at Starbucks. I promise it won’t disappoint.

    Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl June 21, 2013 at 10:15 am

I REALLY need to try sweet potato tots. I plan on making my vegetarian tator tot casserole next week, and I am thinking that I should use sweet potato tots this time! It sounds SUPER delicious.

    Claire C June 21, 2013 at 10:24 am

Hey Tina! Happy Friday and Happy First Day of Summer! Just curious what you mean about “So, I’m still feeling out how food is going to fit into CNC”. I personally love seeing all of your good eats on CNC. It gives me ideas for keeping my own healthy eating interesting! Hope you keep it coming 🙂

    kyla June 21, 2013 at 10:58 am

Just as a heads up, a high fat diet may help with energy balance as long as you aren’t having excess fat in your stools.

    kyla June 21, 2013 at 10:59 am

And you are really smart to watch for anemia! Also be aware of folic acid.

    Tara@mainleyrunningmama June 21, 2013 at 10:58 am

Whhheee, I love summer. Too bad it is just a few short weeks for us here in the Northeast. 🙁 I love the sweet potato puffs too! Wish I could get my kids to make the switch from smiley fries. 🙂

    Cortney June 21, 2013 at 10:59 am

I love that Starbucks tea! I get it unsweetened (it is surprisingly good!) and my 2 year old asks for sips of it and loves it , too!

I LOVE summer so it is hard to list just one thing, so here are a few…

    Summer is the season to:
    *Catch lightening bugs
*Sit on the porch/patio and watch the sunset
    *Eat popcicles

    Alyssa June 21, 2013 at 11:03 am

Oh. My. God! That cupcake in a jar looks AMAZING, & I’m not even a fan of chocolate cake. Have you tried Alexia’s waffle fries? They’re super good. They’re seasoned & crispy & just delicious lol.

    Tina June 21, 2013 at 11:17 am

    I haven’t, but I bet I would love them!!

Claire @ Health Nut Claire June 21, 2013 at 11:11 am

Yay for summer! That cupcake in a jar looks deeelicious!

    sara @ Fitcupcaker June 21, 2013 at 11:32 am

I love summer and I love how its not pitch black when I get up at 5:30 am!

Emily @ More Than Just Dessert June 21, 2013 at 11:38 am

I LOOOOVE that hilarious doggie picture at the top. Happy Summer indeed!

    Sarah C. June 21, 2013 at 11:56 am

Hi – new reader here. I don’t know what exactly you mean by saying that your insides are bleeding, but I thought I’d share my trick for increased iron: cook everything in a cast iron pan. Seriously works. I tend toward anemia and started cooking in cast iron (everything – even oatmeal) and have had no low iron issues since – even while pregnant! Good luck with your health!

    Sarah C. June 21, 2013 at 1:03 pm

@Sarah C.: Also, even while vegan and pregnant.

Sarah @ Sweet Miles June 21, 2013 at 12:11 pm

Summer is the season to…try something new!!! You’ve got extra sunlight at night to play outside as long as you want and it’s wonderful!! Passion Tea from Starbucks is my favorite drink there…venti size please!

Megan (The Lyons' Share) June 21, 2013 at 12:20 pm

Summer is the season to enjoy tons of fresh berries – I love them!!

    Ashley June 21, 2013 at 12:27 pm

Summer is the season to barbeque and be near a sprinkler. Somehow playing in a sprinkler used to be the ultimate summer thing.

    Marge June 21, 2013 at 12:43 pm

I’m sorry to hear about your iron deficiency. I had it for over a year, went to a number of specialists to figure out where my colon was ruptured…they never figured it out. I was running a lot at the time and ate a flexitarian diet. I ate meat about three times a month and red meat maybe once a month. I was also a green juice freak!! I love it and it always makes me feel wonderful. However, for the long term, red meat is really what helps. Besides liver, nothing has a richer source of vitamin b12 which is what you really need to absorb the iron. I would definitely up your red meat meals, and see if it makes you feel energized?

Oh and the reason I got bloodwork was because my running times were suffering, I was extremely lathargic in the morning and mentally foggy. I didnt feel like myself and got slightly depressed. Once my iron stores were up, I had loads of energy, felt smarter(ha!) and my running times were even better than before.

Kim @ Hungry Healthy Girl June 21, 2013 at 12:56 pm

Love Starbucks Passion Fruit Tea!! It is definitely my go-to summer drink!

    Lilly June 21, 2013 at 1:00 pm

If you are looking for anothere coffee alternative… I get 1/2 passion iced tea and 1/2 very berry hibiscus refresher from SBUX. Seriously… it’s amazing! I pretty much don’t drink coffee during warm months b/c I love this so much. The hibuscus refresher is too sweet for me by itself, so the passion iced tea cuts the sweet (and some calories), plus just tastes fantastic!

    Tina June 21, 2013 at 1:06 pm

Mmm… I want to try that!!

Anele @ Success Along the Weigh June 21, 2013 at 1:06 pm

I just showed that cupcakey thing to the Mr and he said “I want that tomorrow.” I guess I know what I’ll be making! 🙂

    Sarah June 21, 2013 at 2:15 pm

Summer is the season to enjoy a good book on the beach while drinking Samuel Smiths organic apple cider over ice

    Linda @ running4two June 21, 2013 at 2:21 pm

Run outside, drink margaritas, go to the beach, watch baseball, have cookouts, take naps, eat ice cream (let’s face it, that’s an all season activity), eat lots of fresh fruit, spend time with friends, slow down and enjoy life

I really want that cupcake in a jar…my bday is July 20th BTW. 🙂

    Kait @ ChickadeeSays June 21, 2013 at 3:50 pm

Have such a fun summer! That picture of your pug is so cute!

    xx Kait

Christina @ The Beautiful Balance June 21, 2013 at 9:05 pm

TJ’s has sweet potato tots?!? NO WAY! How in the world have I missed these every single shopping trip. I’m off to the store right now 🙂

    amanda June 21, 2013 at 10:36 pm

I may have missed it somewhere, but have you ever done a post about what type of juicer you have or have used in the past? I’m interested in getting one, but am totally overwhelmed with the different types. I have Crohn’s (extremely mild) and am hoping to add some juicing into my diet to get some extra nutrients!

    Tina June 22, 2013 at 7:18 am

Yep! It’s called the Bella NutriPro! 🙂

    Kristi June 22, 2013 at 6:22 am

Summer is the time to take new adventures!

    Rebecca@RunningFoodBaby June 24, 2013 at 11:41 am

Try the iced Passion tea with lemonade – it is delicious!! I usually make the tea at home myself, and add freshly sliced lemons! Soooo good

I lived off the Passion Iced Tea at SB’s when I taught at a school that had a SB acros the street (so dangerous!!) and was pregnant, so coffee was kind of out of the picture.

    Heidi June 27, 2013 at 8:01 pm

    Hey, Tina!
You can actually make that tea at home. I worked at Starbucks all through college. 🙂
It doesn’t actually have passion fruit- it’s hibiscus FLOWERS! And orange peel, lemongrass, and a bunch of other delicious things. 🙂 it’s a Tazo tea, so just look for Passion, and you can keep some at home! 😀
