Hi, friends! I hope you had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend! The weather here wasn’t great (until yesterday), so mine was pretty low-key, but still enjoyable. Here’s a quick recap!

Saturday

Saturday morning started bright and early with a CrossFit workout. We did “Murph,” a hero workout in honor of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, 29, of Patchogue, NY, who was killed in Afghanistan on June 28th, 2005.

Murph WOD

The class started with our coach explaining the workout and scaling options, and then he said a few words about Lieutenant Murphy. This workout was one of Lieutenant Murphy’s favorites and he had named it “Body Armor,” but, in his remembrance, it’s now referred to as “Murph.”

Before the WOD started, there were all sorts of strategies going around the gym with how to tackle the 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, and 300 air squats. I was going to break up the reps into 10 sets of 10, 20, and 30, but then one of my friends suggested breaking up the reps into 20 sets of 5, 10, and 15. She said we’d probably waste a lot of time staring up at the bar during set of 10 pull-ups trying to catch our breath. Good point!

This strategy worked pretty well, but I ended up going to my knees for the push-ups about halfway through the workout. I was wasting a ton of time and my form was horrendous, so I finished the workout doing the push-ups on my knees. I did, however, do ALL 100 pull-ups, which I was pretty pumped about considering how much time I’ve taken off from CrossFit in the past 2 months.

I finished in 42:25. Mal finished in 30 minutes because he’s a freak. Body weight + running workouts are his jam. He also split up the reps into 5 pull-ups, 5 push-ups, 15 air squats, and 5 push-ups to give his body a little rest on the push-ups. Next time, I will do that. Mal is so smart.

For Saturday’s hero WOD, I wore a new top from Reebok: the PWR Short Sleeve Vneck in white/rivet grey (it comes in a bunch of great colors). The moisture-wicking PlayDry technology was especially important during “Murph” because it was such a long workout, and I was sweating like a beast. It kept me nice and dry. I also liked the long, slim fit of the shirt because it didn’t ride up and move around while I did 600 (!!!) reps and ran 2 miles.

On Saturday night, Mal and I broke out some champagne and Wisconsin Aged Cheddar and invited some friends (and dogs) over to watch the Bruins game.

We ordered pizza for dinner, which, of course, the dogs (and humans) were pumped about.

Sunday

Mal and I slept in on Sunday morning, made a delicious OMG Pancake breakfast, and then headed down to the Wrentham Outlets to do a little shopping.

Mal wanted some new pants, so we headed to J. Crew where we were surprised (and psyched!) to see a huge 50% off sale going on. Woohoo! Our lucky day! Mal bought a ton of new clothes, which he honestly needed. Some of his t-shirts that he regularly wears literally had holes in them. (What is it with guys and grubby t-shirts?) I work from home and hang out in gym clothes, so I only got a couple of new things.

After a day full of shopping and errands, Mal and I just wanted to chill on Sunday night. We made some cocktails, sat on the couch, and watched a movie. It was a nice, low-key evening.

Monday

Yesterday morning, I woke up, cleaned the house, and did some food prep while Mal was at CrossFit doing a one-on-one intro session. I met him there with Murphy and then the three of us headed to the dog park. The weather was beautiful yesterday!!

After the park, we headed home for a bit and then drove to our friends’ house for a BBQ.

I ate all sorts of delicious foods at the BBQ, including a Cheddar Bratwurst, which is basically a sausage with cheese in it. I never knew these things even existed until yesterday. Obviously, they’re not the healthiest, but, damn, are they delicious! I will definitely be seeking them out for my next BBQ.

The pug enjoyed some serious playtime (there were 3 other dogs at the BBQ) and some watermelon.

Watermelon is his favorite summer treat.

And the pug was pooped by the end of the day.
