After CrossFit last night, Mal and I came home, made ourselves protein shakes, and then exchanged presents since he picked “buy each other a small gift” for our 24 Days of Togetherness.
I ended up buying Mal a copy of Men’s Journal. He loves magazines, but rarely ever buys them for himself (unless we’re at the airport). This particular issue had a big “Gear of the Year” section as well as an article called “The Case for Primal Living,” which I thought he’d really enjoy—and he did! He got into bed a little early last night so he could read his new magazine, and he said “this is a really good issue” a few different times and even made me read an article he thought was especially interesting. Success!
Then, it was time for Mal to give me my gift. He had a little fun with it and made me close my eyes and hold out by hands…
And sniff!
I knew what it was immediately! Marylou’s Coffee!!!!
Mal apologized for going over-budget, but he thought a bag of decaf Milky Way would be a lot more exciting than a $5 gift card to Marylou’s. And he was totally right! I was psyched and immediately went to brew a pot for iced coffee for the morning. Yessssss!
Well, a few minutes later, our coffee marker shut off after brewing only about a 1/4 of a pot. Weird. There was still water inside, so I turned it on again to see if it would continue brewing. No luck. It shut off just a couple of minutes later.
At this point, Mal came over and took the whole thing apart and cleaned it out the best he could. When he tried to brew a pot of coffee, no liquid came out and then we started to smell something burning. Not good. And then the coffee maker shut off again… and again. Wah. We’re devastated. Just kidding. It’s almost 5 years old and we use quite a lot, so I guess it’s time for a new one.
R.I.P. coffee maker.
Dinner
Once we determined that our coffee maker officially bit the dust, I took a shower and then threw together a quick dinner with leftovers from the refrigerator. In the mix: spaghetti squash, ground Chorizo, roasted broccoli, potatoes, and pesto.
And, for dessert, I ate a sugar cookie and then finished drinking the rest of my protein shake.
Question of the Day
Which small kitchen appliance can you not live without?
P.S. You still have time to enter the giveaway to win a entry to the upcoming fitmixer Boot Camp. I’ll pick a winner this afternoon!

tina i have had 3 of those coffee makers and they all broke! the last time, it almost started a fire when my poor parents were babysitting. they were less than pleased. haha. i kept getting the same model because, when they work, i love them. but – they are so unreliable that i finally broke down and bought a different model.
coffee maker!!! I would be a grump if I didn’t start my day off with my usual cup of coffee!
I LOVE our panini maker. It’s the best!!!
@Annette@FitnessPerks: Agreed! I love ours too!
I love my BUNN coffee maker..however, I use my Keurig a lot more if it’s just my husband and myself. If we have any company, then I do a pot of coffee….
Yum! That blended coffee sounds yummy. Right now I’m drinking Dunkin’ Donut pumpkin spice. SO good!
Holy cow – Milky Way flavored coffee?! That sounds nothing short of amazing! Sorry to hear about your coffee maker but at least you get to shop for a new one! Haha. Nothing excites me more than shopping for kitchen appliances/tools. Oh, and to answer your question, I couldn’t live without my coffee maker! Can’t start the day without a cup o’ Joe!
I wanted to let you know that after finding your blog (and immediately falling in love with it!) I’ve decided to give CrossFit a shot! I’ve been interested in it for a long time now after hearing about it from Bob Harper all the time – apparently he fell in love with it, too, haha. Anyways, myself and a friend of mine are making plans to go to a box hear in town. Wish me luck!
Yay! Good luck!
Sorry to hear about the coffee maker! It’s the perfect opportunity to use the cold brew iced coffee concentrate method. I used it when my coffee maker broke and I have never looked back! To me the flavor is SO much richer and smooth. I use my french pressed to make it even easier and save a few steps!

@Cortney: Thanks for the link!
I use my coffee pot daily so that would suck if it broke (which has happened in the past, I’ve got a coffee pot graveyard in the basement, lol). I also use my immersion blender quite frequently and often thank whoever gave me that (can’t remember when I got it or who gave it to me).
I love my coffee maker, but I think I’d be even more lost without my tea kettle. I drink at least 2-3 cups of tea per day in the colder months!
Aw RIP coffee maker
but yay for buying a new one! New appliances are always fun. I can’t live without my toaster or coffee pot, I use them every day.
Tea Kettle and French press. – it’s our go to coffee maker
You should go with a FRENCH PRESS coffee maker… we used to only make drip coffee, but switched to french press about 6 months ago and I will NEVER brew drip again… french press just tastes amazing! I would highly recommend that! (you can usually find good ones at home goods or marshalls for a good price!)
I think I would be more upset about wasting all that precious coffee than losing the actual coffee pot!
@Sandy: I was! I was so sad to lose the Marylou’s Coffee.
I definitely couldn’t live without my Keurig!
My panini maker! I can not stand a non-toasted sandwich now.
Crap, I totally have that coffee maker and it’s almost 5 years old…
What is the time of the thing you use to make your protein shakes? I’d like to get one for my boyfriend for christmas
Thanks!
@kim: The shaker? It’s a Bender Bottle! They’re awesome for mixing up protein shakes! http://astore.amazon.com/canca0c-20/detail/B003SW2QI6
this is so sad! I can’t live without coffee either
I know someone who had the same coffee maker. It started on fire and he complained. They ended up sending a new one. But, I would go with a different brand.
I have a Gordon ramsey hand blender that seriously is just amazing! It has a small little processor you can attach to the bottom which is more powerful than our large food processor! Smoothies, pestos, raw bars/brownies, cake batter…it does it all! Also great for finely dicing onion or any herbs!
That sounds like an amazing coffee flavor, I need to find somewhere with that.
Sorry about your coffee pot, good thing Christmas is right around the corner!
Coffee maker, for sure! Also love my popcorn air-popper!
Microwave….sad to say but I steam everything in there!! Will you be putting up the recipes for that almond flour sugar cookie?? looks delish!
No, sorry, the recipe bombed.
What a waste of good coffee! That’s sad. I think I’d be saddest if I didn’t have a microwave. It just comes in handy so often.
Bummer about the coffee maker! As for absolutely necessary appliances, I can’t live without our blender–I use it at least 5-6 times per week!
RIP Coffee Maker
Good thing it wasn’t first thing in the morning!! (silver lining)
Not that you asked for another recommendation but we have a separate coffee maker and grinder (although I often grind at Costco because that’s where we buy coffee from).
I love our coffee maker because it’s simple(Mr Coffee 12-cup Programmable):
http://www.mrcoffee.com/Product.aspx?pid=121
And this grinder is probably similar to the one that was part of your coffee maker (love it– super strong):
http://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-DBM-8-Supreme-Grind-Automatic/dp/B00018RRRK/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1354670462&sr=8-6&keywords=coffee+grinder
We looked at that Mr. Coffee tonight!
I love using my french press for coffee so I have yet to experience a broken coffee maker. But mary lou’s milk way coffee sounds delicious! I’d love to try that flavor
It’s a tough choice but I have to go with my magic bullet blender – I have a smoothie for breakfast every day and it is both easy to portion the ingredients and clean up afterward
I’m the same way with magazines…I only buy them at airports! I have family across the country in California, and that 6-hour flight needs some variety, so I always throw in a magazine to keep me from being bored!
I could not live without the Magic Bullet. I make smoothies almost every morning.
As for coffee, it’s Keurig all the way for me. But probably not the best for you guys making full pots for iced coffee.
I would have to say my Vitamix. I use it every morning!
My family used to have that same coffeemaker but it went kaput last year, it’s definitely a trooper though, we had had it forever before then.
I definitely couldn’t live without my coffeemaker, I’ve got a cheap-o one for my college apartment and it is a champion besides the strange noises it makes while its brewing. Best $13 I ever spent, I don’t think I could make it through college with out it.
