Away From My Desk

September 28, 2012

I spent a lot of time away from my desk yesterday and it was awesome. Of course, I’m paying for it today (holy inbox explosion!), but it was totally worth it and a really good day.

Workout

Chrissy emailed me the other day to tell me about an amazing Groupon deal for Dancing Crow Yoga (10 classes for $49), so immediately hopped on it and bought one. Thanks, Chrissy!

YogaFlipFlops

I’ve been using YogaDownload to practice at home, but it’s just not the same as a class, so I was psyched about the 10 sessions coming to me and cashed one in yesterday. I also just really love Dancing Crow Yoga. They have the best instructors and classes.

DancingCrowYoga

My favorite class at Dancing Crow Yoga is Nikki’s Strengthen Your Asana. I planned to go yesterday morning, but, right before it started, I slipped into the Gentle Yoga class that was happening at the same time. Nikki’s class is sort of like a Power Yoga class with lots of strength and core work, but I felt like taking more of a low-key, flow-y, and stretchy class. The Gentle Yoga class was good, but a little too gentle for my liking. I liked that it focused on breath and breathing, but there were way too many resting breaks and not enough activity for me. Even still, it felt great to just “let go” and chill out for 75 minutes. It was exactly what I needed.

After yoga, I hit up Banana Republic and Kohl’s to look for a dress to wear to Mal’s sister’s wedding next weekend and something to wear to Jen’s rehearsal dinner the following week. Elizabeth’s wedding is also coming up, so I shopped for that too. It’s wedding season, baby!

Lunch

After shopping for wedding wear, I popped into Whole Foods to grab some groceries (since we can’t seem to go a whole week without a second shopping since we started eating more of a Paleo-esque diet). It was well past my usual lunchtime and I was hungry, so I succumbed to the Whole Foods salad and hot bars.

I also succumbed to the Kombucha. I have no idea if it actually works, but it’s sure delicious!

There was a package of Wholly Guacamole in the fridge that was on its last days, so I added some (with carrot and cucumber sticks) to lunch.

After lunch, I took Murphy to the park. It was a beautiful day, and I was still wearing my workout gear, so I figured why not? A nice walk outside in the sunshine would be good for the both of us.

I switched things up by taking Murphy to a different park.

Unfortunately, at this one, “all dogs must be leashed.” Wicked bummer for Murphy.

AllDogsMustBeLeashed

I kept him on leash, but let him “free” for a little while when we practiced poses for today’s pug photo shoot.

Work it, pug! Love your “Blue Steel”!

Clearly, “Le Tigre” is a totally different look.

Snack

After the park, I came home and snacked on some more guacamole and veggies. Awesome snack.

Be back soon with dinner!

So many people think yoga is just being in a room with a bunch of people stretching, but it’s so much more than that. It’s a great way to keep your body and mind healthy. I recommend it all the time. A flexible body has a much greater chance of being at ease and stress-free. Great post!

if you like dancing crow yoga so much, why don’t you like to them and not back to yourself?

I did link to them, but I link back to my old posts, so people can read about all of my experiences.

Murphy is so good at posing for pictures! I can’t get my brother’s dog to sit still let alone look at the camera!

Your pictures of the park and Murphy are amazing. I really enjoyed your post!

Have also been eating a Paleo-esqe diet after doing Whole30 last month – totally agree about needing additional groceries. Used to shop once for the week and now have found the need to shop twice to keep us in stock. Not really in the budget to do this…will have to find a happy medium.

Tina September 28, 2012 at 12:27 pm

I know! It’s expensive! We’re spending double our old grocery budget now-a-days. It’s definitely worth it though.

I live in Boulder where peeps are craaaaa-razy for their Kombucha. I remain unconvinced about any of the health claims, but the Gingerberry flavor is so good–you should try it next!

Murphy is too cute, can’t even stand it. Yoga, shopping, lunch, and going for a walk? Sounds like a perfect day! Shouldn’t feel bad about stepping away from the desk for a day like that :)

I got a similar Groupon deal from my local studio. I love deals like that!!!

I eat a paleo-ish diet, and I find that the key to skipping the second shopping trip is to buy a combination of whatever looks good and/or is on sale and longer lasting fruits and veggies. For instance I love eggplant (and it’s in season) but it needs to be used first. I buy it anyway, but I also buy cauliflower or broccoli. Hope that helps!

Having a day out of the office is totally worth the inbox explosion sometimes! Yoga, shopping, whole foods, and a dog walk sounds like just about my perfect day

Danielle@cleanfoodcreativefitness September 28, 2012 at 12:51 pm

I always end up at the grocery store twice during the week too and I really do think it’s Paleo! It forces me to only buy fresh foods and they just tend to go bad faster!

Beks September 28, 2012 at 12:58 pm

I tried Kombucha once (same brand as the one you showed, but Cranberry), and it was too vinegary. Is there a particular flavor that isn’t so pungent?

Reply

Heather September 28, 2012 at 2:46 pm

@Beks: I find the original flavor to be the most mild tasting. You could try that and mix it with a little bit of juice such as pomegranite or ginger, that will cut down the vinegar taste. I actually just started brewing my own kombucha at home and find that it’s much tastier than the store bought kind.

What a beautiful day outside!! I think it’s great to spend time away from the office… even if your email explodes. Happy Friday!

Hi Tina! I love your blog especially now that I have switched to a paleo approach for eating! I am going to make those delicious pumpkin spice bars you tweeted this morning. Do you think I could switch out some of the almond flour for hazelnut flour?

Reply

Tina September 28, 2012 at 1:05 pm

Yea, I think it would work. I’d also add some chopped apples to the batter! :)

Reply

Marie September 28, 2012 at 8:03 pm

@Tina: is that recipe on this blog anywhere? Am looking for some paleo-ish treats :)

Reply

Rachel September 29, 2012 at 10:00 am

@Marie: @Marie: Here it is Marie! http://pretzelcrisps.com/4016/ I am going to make today or tomorrow with hazelnut flour so I can let you know how it turns out. My current favorite paleo treat (even though I have only been paleo for 2ish weeks ha) is http://paleomg.com/pumpkin-granola/

Annette@FitnessPerks September 28, 2012 at 1:52 pm

That would drive me crazy to have to go to the store twice a week! hah. I always buy tons of fruits & veggies each week, and they last us perfectly :)

Love the practice photo shoot! Haha.

Did you find some good dresses?? :)

If you’re looking for a good yoga video to do at home, I really like the Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown…it’s tougher than a typical yoga video, but incorporates a lot of stretching!

Tina, I Googled Kombucha to see what it is (I have seen it in Whole Foods/on other blogs, but I wasn’t sure what it was) and I found this and thought I should send it to you. Not sure if you take this medication, but its worth a mention:

Some evidence from small case studies has shown kombucha to aggravate symptoms of ulcerative colitis in patients taking remicade, potentially causing life-threatening side effects, such as causing the appendix to burst.[

Tina September 28, 2012 at 3:38 pm

Yikes! It’s a good thing I’m not on Remicade. Good to know! Thanks.

Love the Wholly Guac…freezes well, I buy it at Costco. Murphy’s always a hit in my book and you did good on the wedding clothes, super cute. I may have to pick your brain about your P.T. certification (or just read your posts again). I am thinking of doing that too although I’d really like to do the nutrition one too or maybe even first.
