Hello, hello! I just got home from a fun weekend in upstate New York. It was quite a whirlwind trip!
Bright and early on Saturday morning, Mal, Murphy, and I hit the road to drive to my friend Matt’s parents’ house. His family runs the Boilermaker 15k every year and they kindly hosted us for the weekend at their house.
The first stop of our road trip was (obviously) at Marylou’s. Murphy even got himself a little treat there. Doesn’t the photo of him look like he’s ordering something from the drive-thru? “One Milk Bone, please!”
Mal and I haven’t taken a road trip in a long time, so we were pretty pumped for this one. We packed lots of snacks and rocked out to the David Guetta station on Pandora for most the drive.
Murphy chilled in the backseat and rocked his “Boots” eyes.
Do you see the resemblance to Puss In Boots? I think Murphy has mastered the eyes.
Lunch
Mal and I hit up a rest stop along the Mass Pike for lunch. Unfortunately, it didn’t have too many food options, so we made do with what was available and opted for McDonald’s.
I hadn’t eaten at McDonald’s in ages, so I ordered the Bacon Ranch salad and hoped for the best.
And, you know what, it was disgusting. I ate most of it because I was hungry, but, man, it was not good. The lettuce and tomatoes were fresh, but the chicken and bacon were pretty nasty. Blah. I should have known better.
After lunch, I snacked on some dry roasted almonds and some cherries that I packed from home.
A few hours later, we arrived at the expo for the Boilermaker.
It was held at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica.
The expo was organized really well with lots of signage, which made picking up our bibs and goody bags quick and painless. Instead of a t-shirt, we got pint glasses in our goody bags. Clearly, the Boilermaker is my type of race!
Mal and I were in and out of the expo in 10 minutes.
Mal and I planned to meet Matt at the expo, so we chilled outside with Murphy and ate a snack while we waited. I enjoyed a Ginger Beer (non-alcoholic) from Saranac while Mal ate a pineapple Chobani. Murphy drank some water and looked cute.
When Mal picked up his bib, the race volunteer said to him: “You must be fast with a number like that.” Apparently, the Boilermaker assigns bib numbers based on the times you submit online. Mal is a speed demon, so his number was really low.
We met Matt and his family at the expo and then headed to his parents’ house.
Dinner
While dinner was being cooked, we relaxed outside and munched on some appetizers, including a delicious sausage bread that Matt’s mom baked. (I’ll try to track down the recipe for you guys. I want it too!)
I also drank a couple of Blackberry Wheats.
How fun are these wine glasses that Matt’s mom made for the Boilermaker!?
Adorable, right?
Upstate New York is so beautiful!
We enjoyed a big ol’ pasta dinner the night before the race. Carb load, baby!
I loaded my plate with pasta, meatballs, and salad with homemade balsamic vinaigrette. The greens for the salad were fresh from the garden. So delish!
After dinner, Mal housed a bunch of cookies, which, surprisingly, ended up being key to his success on race day. I had a bite of one of his Moon Pie cookies.
Murphy was really jealous of Mo’s piece of rawhide. Sadly, Murphy is not allow to have it anymore, so if you look closely, you can see the biggest pug pout ever on his face. Haha!
After dinner, we hung out for awhile and hydrated. I ended up drinking a ton of water and peeing a zillion times throughout the night, which was kind of annoying, but definitely necessary after barely drinking any water on the drive to New York and then downing a couple of beers. We all headed to bed a little after 10:30 because we needed to wake up early for the Boilermaker.
Part II coming next!

I went to college at Syracuse (technically “central” NY). Beautiful country up there!

@Angela@The Chicken Scoop: @Angela@The Chicken Scoop: Me too. I love upstate + central NY. it’s gorgeous up there. How I miss the hill
Looks so fun!!! I used to love those moon pie cookies when I was little! Can’t wait for part two! I’m sure you did awesome!
My hubby and I have to eat a lot of fast food for our jobs, but we try to order more salads than burgers. I’ve never ordered the chicken bacon salad, but I really like the Southwest chicken salad. Hope the Boilermaker went well!
I’ve heard of this race before. I can’t wait to see how y’all did!
That sausage bread looks AMAZING! So does the beer. Looks like a super fun trip!
hurray for boilermaker! kind of sad i missed it this year!!
Bleh. The McDonald’s just looks gross. I read an article once that they are one of the top 5 healthiest fast food chains in the country now. I don’t believe it. I think they paid someone for that title.
How did I miss you were running the Boilermaker!? I live in Utica and read your blog faithfully, boo! wish I saw you ,Mal or Murphy!
Lots of family and friends ran, beautiful race day and awesome race isnt it? Can’t wait for recap.
Those black and white cookies look amazing! And Murphy definitely has the “Boots” eyes down … perfectly pathetic haha!
Yeah upstate! I went to Skidmore in Saratoga Springs, and my fam is from up near Lake George. Always happy to see people enjoying upstate.
Looking forward to the race recap!
My family is from outside of Utica and I ran my 7th Boilermaker this year. I looked up Mals and yours times and I saw that you both did great! I was looking for you before and after the race but had no luck with the 14,000+ runners there!
Love Upstate New York and the North in general this time of year! Hot-yes but beautiful AND it cools off some at night. I keep hearing things about Marylou’s-I’ll have to find one next time I’m up there!
I ran the boilermaker too! I actually saw you sitting across from me at the expo, while i was waiting for a friend. I didn’t want to bother you, but I did a double take and then got nervous! I hail from Southie myself, so it was fun to see that the race had so many people from different areas there!!
I’m from Utica too and ran yesterday too.. Awesome right?so fun
It infuriates me when I buy food and then it’s horrible. McDonalds would put me over the top.
McDonald’s has the worst chicken ever!! It has a weird slimy texture to it and it seriously makes me want to gag. When I have no other option but Mickey D’s I usually just go for a plain baby cheeseburger and a fruit n yogurt parfait to go with.
Yeah, that salad looks disgusting. I haven’t had McDonalds in probably 8 years now and I don’t think I ever will!!
Can’t wait until part II:)
That salad looks awful but that sausage bread looks amazing! Pepperoni bread is one of my favorites too.
Love Murphy’s little faces! Can’t wait for Part II!
Whew, a 15k? I’d die. Can’t wait to see the results!
I was there as well!! I saw someone who looked like Mal ( and probably was) as everyone was waiting to get to their respective places Sunday Morning!!! The race was AWESOME!!! I hope you guys had as much fun as I did. I woke up this morning craving to do it all over again =(
I think it’s always good to be reminded if how bad fast food really is.
Wow looks like fun! Utica isn’t too far from me, and I know one of my friends from school was in that race!
Haha Murph does have Puss N Boots eyes! And that dinner looks heavenly!
Oh man, you missed out. I live in Northampton and am on the MA Pike a lot. Some of the MA Pike rest stops have Fresh City – very fresh made to order wraps and burritos. I know the Charleton and Hopkinton stops have them and I think one other. Next time!
The wine glass are adorable, the blackberry wheat looks amazing, and I am salivating over the cookies as I type. Jealous!
I loooove upstate new york, especially during the summertime! I don’t know if I could do it in the winter, but summer is definitely pretty
Gah! That sausage bread looks too good to be true!
Murphy is so adorable. Who could say no to that face. When I go through the drive thru at Starbucks Sienna is on my lap like that and I tell them she wants the bacon frapuccino
It looks like you guys had a good vacation! I guess minus the McDonald’s salad – what a shame! Just a little reminder of why I need to stay away from that place: you can’t even try to be healthy because the food just sucks!
I love road trips/ day trips! I wish I did one like every week lol
Looks like you had a lot of fun, can’t wait for part two! And yea…fast food…EH!
I recently developed an allergy to mango and I swear I look exactly like Murphy every time I see someone else eating it! I feel his pain.
Looks like fun so far….and I’m with you, upstate new York is gorgeous!
I was born and raised in Upstate NY just outside of Utica. Boilermaker weekend was always such an amazing weekend and experience. I now live in CO and it is wonderful but your post makes me miss “home” a little bit! Looking forward to the next part of your recap!
I’ve heard the boilermaker is a great race, I hope you guys had a good time – looking forward to part two!
ps murphy is ADORABLE!
My husband admires your taste in beer–he always opts to try a new kind, defaulting to hefs! Murphy, you are adorable and my Cooper totally would hang. What a beautiful setting!
ugh, McDonald’s salads. I’ve suffered through a couple of those, and yea – the chicken is never, ever good. All dry and rubbery.
It’s sad that fast food restaurants can’t even get a salad right…I mean come on now! Blech…
Looks like fun! Pasta and salad = best pre race meal
Wow between the sausage bread and pasta, your MIL sounds like quite the chef
!
How long is the drive from Boston to NY? Murphy’s boots eyes are hilarious!
It depends on what part of the state you go to, but it took us 5 hours.
Ahh Marylou’s! I ordered coffee two weeks ago, and it still hasn’t come
Seeing it on your blog is a tease!
I hate it when I’m starving and the food options are limited, so I have to resort to something like McDonalds! That’s a bummer about the salad. But that sausage bread and pasta dinner look like they made up for your crappy lunch!
The Boilermaker expo was a blast! I also hit up Chobani for some samples
And I love those Boilermaker wine glasses–very cool!
That landscape does look beautiful. In my cross-country days I used to love running races through wide open grassy fields with occasional trees for shade. I’ll have to read parts II to see if thats where the actual race was held. But that “sausage bread” does look amazing! I never even thought of baking anything like that. And blackberry Wheat beer sounds quite yummy.
Reading this makes me so excited for my race coming up next weekend!!
Thanks so much for sharing this post. Can’t wait to read the second part! Between the appetizer, the meal & the cookies everything looks delicious!!!
I love the first picture of Murphy in the car looking at you guys like c’mon let’s go!!! I love visiting NY for the black and white cookies (we cna’t get them in Chicago) and i have never seen a chcolote one before. How exciting! I will have to find one the next time i visit!!!
I seriously drool every time I see you drinking coffee from Marylou’s…I want to try their coffee so badly, but it’s just a little bit too far away for me to go for coffee…lol! I’m thinking I might have to order online!!
You did get halfmoons!! That’s the half buttercream, half chocolate fudge frosting with chocolate cake bottom. My absolute favorite dessert of all time. You can get them from Gingerbread bakery, Hemstrought’s was the original bakery to make them.
Sausage bread is another yummy Utica specialty! I made a healthier version of the classic at Christmas last year:
