Taking Care of Business

January 16, 2012

Mal had the day off from school today, so we used it as an opportunity to take care of some business around the house.

After breakfast, Mal cleaned up the house while I painted 3 out of the 4 walls in my office. I’m planning to paint the fourth wall a darker shade of blue sometime tomorrow.

Progress:

Workout

I spent a few hours painting and then headed to the afternoon CrossFit class with Mal. We started with the strength part of the workout, which was 3 sets of 3 Power Snatches. I spent a lot of time working on my form with this one, so I didn’t worry about increasing my weight too much. It was a really technical lift, so my brain and body struggled to work together, and I only sort of got the hang of it. I just need to keep practicing it. Next time!

The Workout of the Day was a “Hero” WOD, which means it’s named after someone incredibly brave, who lost their life fighting for our freedom. Oakland SWAT Sergeant Daniel Sakai, age 35, was killed on March 21, 2009 in the line of duty, so this workout was named after him.

“Danny”

20 minute AMRAP:

30 24″ Box Jumps

20 115# Push Presses

30 Pull-ups

“Danny” was a tough one! It was a 20-minute AMRAP, so you wanted to do as many cycles of the exercises as possible in that amount of time. I finished 2 rounds + the Box Jumps, Push Presses, and 20 of the 30 Pull-ups on the third set. Let’s just say 20 minutes flew by today! I used 45 pounds on the Push Presses and a blue band for the Pull-ups. (I actually switched to a green band on the final set of Pull-ups because my arms were so exhausted!)

Lunch

After CrossFit, I threw together a quick lunch: reheated leftover turkey burger with ketchup and Creamy Spinach Dip with veggies.

IMG_0008 (800x600)

I finished off lunch with a spoonful of White Chocolate Wonderful Peanut Butter. Yummmmm!

IMG_0011 (600x800)IMG_0009 (800x600)

After lunch, Mal and I went shopping for a new TV stand as well as new furniture my office. We took Murphy along for the ride. He loves riding in the car!

IMG_0013 (800x600)

Mal came up with the brilliant idea of purchasing unfinished furniture to save us some money. We like doing home improvement projects, so sanding and staining new furniture isn’t a hassle at all for us. Plus, we’re all about saving money where we can!

IMG_0015 (800x600)

Our trip was a success because we bought a new TV stand (below), a desk, and a cabinet for my office for hundreds of dollars less than we planned to pay at one of those big furniture stores. And the quality of the pieces was excellent. All three were built well with beautiful (real) wood. Woohoo!

IMG_0014 (800x600)

We loaded the TV stand and desk (it came in a box and needs to be assembled) in the back of Mal’s car, so Murphy sat in the front seat with me on the drive home. When he was sitting on my lap, I noticed that he somehow got light blue paint on his face right near his eye. Remember the last time he got paint on himself? I have no idea how it happens!?

IMG_0018 (800x600)

Snack

When we got home, Mal and I rearranged the furniture in our house to fit the new TV stand. While we worked, I snacked on some more Creamy Spinach Dip and veggies. Great snack!

IMG_0024 (800x600)

Mal and I have been moving non-stop all day, but we accomplished a ton and really took care of business.

And now I’m going to faceplant into bed. Good night, friends!

Good idea on the furniture. I have done the same to save money and also bought floor samples as well for sometimes as much as 1/2 off.

Sounds like you had a busy and productive day!

I would love to finish my own furniture – stain it to the perfect color – and then be able to enjoy your hard work on a daily basis.

I can’t wait to see your finished office – Matt and I have been doing some serious cleaning and for once, I am sitting at my desk on my computer as opposed to the kitchen table. It is amazing!

Whenever I see others post Peanut Butter & Co. on their blogs I wish really badly that they sold it anywhere where I live in Canada! Not fair!

@Olivia: Ahhh I agree! I live in Canada too and have found it at Save-On foods, but they only carry the “dark chocolate wonderful” and the “cinnamon raisin” which is delicious!

WCW P.B. is definitely good stuff.

And the painting project looks nice…glad you were able to cross that item off your Honey Do list with the day off school. Love it when that happens.

We did a hero wod at my box too – “Jack”

Complete as many rounds as possible in 20 minutes of:
115/75 pound Push press, 10 reps
10 KB Swings, 55/35#
10 Box jumps, 24/20 inch box

After round 1, 75# got REALLY heavy!! Was hoping for 9 rounds but I got 8.

unfinished furniture seems to be made better. They can’t cover up errors with paint and stain. You also know its real wood unlike a lot of stuff thats made with partical board.

Murphy is too cute!!! My dog used to do that, get into stuff somehow without my noticing until later on. He always used to act like nothings nothin’ which made it ever cuter. I swear they must do some sort of covert opp though. You can have your eye on them the whole time and in that split second when you aren’t watchin’ they’re in there.

Buying unfinished furniture really is a money saver! When we were looking for a stand for our living room tv, about 5 years ago, we went thrift shopping! We found a SOLID wood dresser for $11.25, sanded, painted and stenciled it and it is now one of our favorite pieces in our home. It’s funny because we get a lot of compliments on this piece as it looks like an expensive piece of furniture from one of those fancy stores. Ha…and to think we only spent $11.25! :) Excited to see how you finish your projects.

That is really sweet how Crossfit names some of its WOD’s after heroes who lost their lives fighting. What a great way to honour them! :)

Mmmmm that White Chocolate Peanut Butter sounds fantastic! I need to look that up and see where I can find it here in Texas. I was looking up the Kodiak Pancake Mixes and did find stores here that sell it. I cannot wait to buy some and try them. I love how low in sugar they are! Oh and just an FYI I did the Aramco Houston 1/2 Marathon on Sunday and broke my old time by almost 2 minutes!!! Last years time: 1:57:32 and this year: 1:55:49!

AMRAP’s always kill me! I think I push myself harder than a workout with a set number of rounds timed. When doing Hero WOD’s, I always think that my struggles during the workout are nothing compared to what the namesake went through. It’s very humbling and motivating to work out in honor of someone who gave their life for this country.
