Super Weird Workouts

October 13, 2011

You guys have heard of trampoline, hula hoop, and x-rated workouts, like Cardio Striptease and pole dancing, right? Well, have you heard about these weird workouts?

Jukari Fit to Fly

A circus-inspired workout? Many gyms now offer classes that include a mix of tumbling, juggling and trapeze work. However, only one workout has been endorsed by Cirque du Soleil, and that’s Jukari Fit to Fly, which was developed in conjunction with Reebok and is offered at Equinox. Jukari Fit to Fly features circus equipment that’s been modified so that it’s easier and safer (for regular people) to use. Not only can you indulge your childhood fantasy of flying on the flying trapeze, you’ll tone your upper body and your core muscles.

Cycle Karaoke

Cycle Karaoke is a spinning class with karaoke. (Oh, boy. Can I take a shot of vodka before class?) Participants pick out their favorite tunes and sing them out during the ride. To ensure that participants focus on the workout and not singing their hearts out, some instructors only open certain songs up for audience participation. In the meantime, instructors may take a turn at the mike themselves. Cycle Karaoke is offered at Crunch, but similar classes exist all over the country.

Naked Yoga

I had no idea that people practiced yoga in the buff outside their own homes, but, apparently, Naked Yoga classes are quite popular. Unclothed yogis say it helps to deepen their yoga practice, encourages ultimate appreciation, acceptance, and love for their bodies, and also builds intimate bonds with the people in their yoga community. Some classes are co-ed, but most are male-only, and are common in gay communities. According to MSNBC.com, studios that offer naked yoga are found in cities such as Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Salt Lake City.

Breakfast

This morning’s breakfast was a big bowl of pumpkin oatmeal with chopped dates, ground flaxseed meal, and a scoop of peanut butter. On the side, I enjoyed a glass of iced coffee with soy milk and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

With all the pumpkin that I’m eating lately, I’m going to turn into one!

But, really, I hope I don’t turn orange.

Question of the Day

What do you think of these ‘weird’ workouts? Have your tried any of them? If you had the chance, would you?

My answers:

  • Jukari Fit to Fly: Yes! Even though I’m terrified of heights, I think it would be such a blast.
  • Cycle Karaoke: Yes! I love sing-alongs, and I can definitely see myself getting into it. Although, I’m not kidding about that vodka shot.
  • Naked Yoga: Probably not, but never say never!

P.S. Happy birthday, Meeghan!

I’d definitely do the trapeze one! We went to club med when I was in 6th grade and I got chosen for the trapeze show (out of like 75 kids!) at the end of the week. It was probably one of the most fun things I’ve ever done :)

A karaoke spin class would scare me, though I’m not a fan of karaoke in general. My gym just started iRide, a spin class with an accompanying video. Haven’t had a chance to try it out but it sounds like fun.

As for naked yoga, reminds me of the naked Seinfeld episode with the naked girlfriend-there is good naked, and bad naked.

I took a trapeze class once! It was at Trapeze School NY in NYC…and was probably one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had. I’ve been dying to go back for more lessons since–seriously, I highly recommend it!

Also, I would SOOOOOO be down for cycle karaoke. As I was reading the description, I could already tell that working out (any type) would be infinitely more fun if it was socially acceptable to just sing out loud on the top of your lungs! If only, if only..

oh my gosh my mom and I ALWAYS talk about starting a cycle karaoke class since we always sing anyway!

I can barely breathe during spin class, let alone sing! I feel like I wouldn’t get as good of a workout in karaoke spinning… it would be fun though! :D

I was thinking the same thing. I feel like I’d be laughing the whole time!

One of my friends is an instructor for aerial silks. She posts the coolest photos on facebook. It seems like a really great workout for strength and flexibility.

And there’s pole dancing classes. Seems a bit odd!

Ewwwww – naked yoga. That is nasty. I can’t imagine it. I go to hot yoga, and there is enough sweating and “showing” in that – absolutely can’t imagine it naked. As a side note, I’m a little late to the party, but I ordered your book through Amazon the other day and am waiting for its arrival. Thanks for the fun blog.

Wow! I would totally do Jukari!!! The spinning karaoke looks fun too but I just don’t think I could get my breath right, I’d rather fly through the air!

Cycle Karaoke?!?!?!?!! Best idea ever!! Sometimes I sing along quietly anyway and always secretly wish the entire class would just join in with me so I could sing at the top of my lungs. I should start a version down here in Phx for all my musical theatre friends!
