A Ride in the Car to the Park

October 31, 2011

Last night, I realized that I’m not going to see Murphy for almost an entire week once I leave for California on Wednesday morning, so I planned some quality time together into our day today.

Murphy and I took “a ride in the car to the park” this morning. (This dog pretty much loses his sh*t when he hears those three words in the same sentence. Typically, he runs around in circles and barks until he gets into the car.)

IMG_0002 (600x800)

Murphy might not look it in the above photo, but I swear he was psyched to go to the park. We visited his new favorite place to run around and explore: Bare Cove Park.

IMG_0003 (600x800)

I wasn’t sure how many dogs we’d see at the park during the week, but there were a ton of people running and walking with their dogs. Apparently, Bare Cove is always a happening place!

It was a really chilly morning, so I bundled up. Once I started walking, it wasn’t so bad.

IMG_0023 (600x800)

Murphy and I explored a new route and walked for a little over an hour. Usually, he gets distracted by other dogs at the park and forgets how to listen, but he was really well-behaved this morning.

Murphy is the best exercise buddy. His pug energy is contagious, and our walk put me in the best mood. Hooray for dogs!

Workout

I wore exercise clothes to the park, so when I got home I figured I’d put them to work with a quickie workout in my living room. All I needed for this workout was a resistance band and a stopwatch (and half of an episode of Jersey Shore to keep me entertained).

20-Minute Resistance Band Workout

I repeated the circuit 3 times and didn’t rest between exercises or sets.

Weekly Workouts

  • Sunday: Off
  • Monday: 60-minute walk with Murphy + 20 min. resistance band workout
  • Tuesday: 5-mile run
  • Wednesday: Off
  • Thursday: Fitness class
  • Friday: Yoga class
  • Saturday: Off
  • Sunday: MARATHON!!!!!

Lunch

Today’s lunch included a new product from Garlic Gold that they sent me to sample. Introducing Garlic Gold Southwest Blend! It pretty much tastes like garlicky taco seasoning. Yea, it’s pretty awesome.

IMG_0040 (600x800)

I added the Southwest Blend nuggets to scrambled eggs with roasted broccoli and sautéed mushrooms. On the side, I had an apple and an Adora chocolate disk.

P.S. I’m hosting a Halloween giveaway on Trading Up Downtown! It involves cute Halloween accessories!

My dog goes crazy when she hears the word “walk”. It’s the only time she gets excited to spend time with us actually. Looks like a gorgeous fall day!

I am leaving my pup for 10 days later this month and even now I am sad about that fact! We’ve had to revert to calling a walk a W-A-L-K or a “You know what” because my dog is such a spaz when we actually say the word! Too bad he is also starting to learn to spell this word and figure out our hidden meaning ;)

I haven’t run at Bar Cove Park yet I run a lot at Worlds End in Hingham – it’s beautiful there!

YAH for good workouts that are quick–and get some outside time. Good luck prepping for the marathon, soo cool :)

Fun times at the park it looks like. Doggie energy is contagious; you’re right about that. Glad Murphy helped get ya going :)

Our dogs used to go mental when they heard the word ‘walk’.. i swear, even when we spelled it out they still knew what it meant!

Awww I’m sure Murphy appreciated the quality time with his momma. :)

Well, I always love your posts, and your pets, and your photography, but on another note, I’m waiting for your apple smoothie recipe! When do we get to see it?

Haha. My dog “forgets to listen” too! The chilly (well chilly for southwest Louisiana) weather has made her crazy lately!

Reply

Amanda October 31, 2011 at 2:31 pm

My dog also “forgets to listen” whenever she sees something that interests her – other dogs, people, a stick…anything and everything. For this reason, she’s only allowed off leash when it’s completely fenced in. It’s a bummer, but she’s just not reliable enough off the leash.

Nice workout, resistance bands are awesome because you don’t need a ton of different weights to get in a tough workout. I did something similar in my own room today in fact.

Any chance we’ll see those Garlic Gold nuggets on Open Sky??!! Are you going to be at their Open house in the city?

Reply

Tina October 31, 2011 at 2:42 pm

@Hillary Gras: Yep, they’ll definitely be on OpenSky! I’m not getting to NYC until Saturday afternoon, so I’m going to miss it. Bummer!

Brittany @ GOtheXtraMile October 31, 2011 at 2:41 pm

My dog does the same exact thing. He does the little head twist first, then he runs around and goes crazy. Haha super cute! That a great workout that you got done in your living room! Totally borrowing it when I need to workout at home :)

Murphy is such a character. Going to the park, he looks like what any other dog would when going to the vet. Going to the vet, he looks like what any other dog would when going to the park. SO SILLY, that pic cracks me up.

I love dogs so much! He was probably so well-behaved because he knew he wouldn’t see you for awhile. I feel like my dog always acts extra cute when he senses I’ll be gone for awhile. It might all be in my head, but I like to believe it.

I love how you can say a long sentence but their ears will perk up at the one word they know like car, walk, food, biscuit… Such simple minds ;)

Catherine October 31, 2011 at 3:00 pm

I learned to spell things around my dogs too, so they wouldn’t get too crazy. It was good practice for having the twins!

Ashley @ Good Taste Healthy Me October 31, 2011 at 3:04 pm

lol I love it when my parents dog hears those words. She starts whimpering, hopping around and tries to rub against your legs. It’s the cutest thing ever!

Murphy is awesome. It makes me smile to think of how excited he must have been to go to the park with his mom. :-)

Hi Tina! I love the quick workouts that you do! Have you ever tried Gym Boss app for Iphone? It’s great for quick intervals and is way easier to use than the stopwatch. You should check it out!

Alouysius (our Pug) does the same thing when he’s excited except he runs the circles around and around ME. Crazy dog!

I love going to the park with my dog as well. I am kind of an accidental in love owner. The dog was for the kids, but before you know it we’re attached at the hip. That’s what happens when I am home all day, we can’t help but bond.

I couldn’t agree more – hooray for dogs! :) Our two labs give me so much energy and always put me in the best mood (except when they get into trouble). Going on walks and runs with them is one of my favorite ways to spend my time. Looked like a beautiful day!

The best thing my dog gets excited over is “ducks”, or when he smells the salt water in the car and knows we are by the ocean, ha. He whines and jumps up to the window, and in my arms immediately. We visit the ducks by a pond and he is so amazed by them.

We usually don’t take my dog out in the car that much, but when we do it’s most likely to bring him to the “doggy hotel” if we go on vacation. We don’t even need to say a single word–yet he always KNOWS when he’s going to be in for a car ride. I think he watches us running around the house cleaning & getting clothes together to pack, so he knows that he’s going away for a few days, too!

My dog loves walks and car rides! She can barely stay still long enough to get her leash on! I wish I got that excited over long walks. lol

Ann @ Turbo Teacher October 31, 2011 at 6:58 pm

I wish Lilly had tons of energy like Murphy ~ I need to walk her more often to get her into shape. She does not last long when we walk!!!

I’m so glad I’m not the only owner whose dog loses their mind when the word “walk” or “car” is mentioned. My Boston Terrier Oreo is beside herself when she knows she gets to go somewhere- all listening skills go out the window and she goes bananas. We have to hide our preparations until the last minute or she’s unbearable!

Aw, it’s going to be hard, but just think how happy you and Murphy will both be when you get back!
Tonight we brought our dog to my in-laws’ who have a pit bull. They get along really well, and the pit is SO sweet! His main goal in life is to lick whatever human happens to be nearby as thoroughly as possible. If he could get away with crawling into their laps, life would be perfect, lol!

You have to love fall hikes! It’s so beautiful! What you said about Murphy, when he hears the magic words, cracks me up, my dogs are the same way!!!

I’ll have to try resistance bands, I never used them, is it easy for uncoordinated people? Thanks for posting your workout schedule, it helps us who don’t have the motivation to workout!!
