I don’t know why I thought our entire house would be set up and settled in five days, but it’s definitely not. Perhaps it was some wishful thinking?
Right now, we’re waiting on new rug in two different rooms, which means we can’t completely unpack and put things away. Well, we can, but I’d rather not move everything before the rug arrives and then after. I guess I’m lazy like that!
Plus, I think things look more organized stored away in boxes than strewn all over the house.
In the rooms that don’t require new rug, things are slowly coming together. The living room is just about “done” (minus the books holding down the edges of the rug).

At IKEA the other day, we bought a new arm chair.

And a new area rug.

The rug only cost $19.99!

And it’s pug approved!

Now, we’re trying to flatten the previously-rolled up corners with big, heavy books.

It seems to be working!

The living room still has a ways to go, but we’re making progress!
Breakfast
So, I have a new food “obsession.” I’m currently in love with Pepperidge Farm Raisin Cinnamon Swirl Bread. (Side note: I’m also in love with gnocchi.) Raisin Cinnamon Swirl Bread always seems to bring me back to my childhood.

Growing up, my grandmother always had Raisin Cinnamon Swirl Bread at her house, and she’d always serve it the same way: toasted and slathered in butter. My goodness, the smell alone brings me back to my grandmother’s kitchen.

Question of the Day
What food(s) remind you of your childhood?

My husband and I moved into our first house this past July. I thought it would take a week to get all unpacked and set up, too….
We’re still working on it!
It’s a process for sure. And definitely helped when I realized I needed to let go of my time frames and just enjoy the house!
Mangoes remind me of childhood! I grew up in Jamaica climbing mango trees. I even considered naming my blog something like, “Alexia eats too many mangoes.”
Blueberry muffins (from the box) and coffee – that combination of smells always had me hopping out of bed at grandma and grandpa’s house!
Oddly, peas with melted butter! One of the only vegetables I liked back then; I must have had them with every dinner.
I would say the food the best reminds me of childhood is Blueberry Pancakes. I loved them!! Every time we would have a speical day Dad would always make them homemade, no box stuff, from scratch. They were amazing..
I have that same rug! I love it and an awesome price. xoxo Ikea!
What a great rug!!! And the price is right!!
My mom used to always have raisin bread in the house. My grandmother used to make me butter sandwiches. No joke….white bread with butter.
I see that someone else has already mentioned it, but flipping it upside down for the day helps too.
Oh Ikea, I love going in there, but it’s such a hole in the wallet sometimes.
My grandma would do the same thing! It was always such a treat. Somehow the butter melted perfectly for her and it always tasted so good with a glass of milk
Cinnamon sugar reminds me of when I was little. I had it everyday sprinkled on a piece of toast.
i love cinnamon raisin swirl bread! mmm i want to bake a loaf right now!
The things that I associate with family and childhood are beef stew and cinnamon rolls! I come from a Scandinavian family and we could throw down with both of these dishes!
Cinnamon toast and hot chocolate
Baked beans on toast reminds me a lot of being a kid. My brother was a very picky eater and that’s one of the few things my mum could convince him to eat. We ate it A LOT but I still enjoy it to this day
.
I love cinnamon swirl and it reminds me of my childhood also.
Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches remind me of my childhood!
Many many years before I would ever set eyes on the internet, my grandmother used to make me peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Sometimes she would mash the banana and peanut butter up in a bowl and then slather it onto the bread…other times, she’d just slice it and lay it on the bread.
I thought it was the best thing ever made. My friends at school would tease me when I pulled one out of my lunchbox. They had never seen one and it’s true, while the taste was stille excellent, the color was usually a little off by 11:30am.
I didn’t care though. PB&B rules! I thought so then, and I think so now!
Grilled cheese sandwiches always take me back to my childhood. Those and Lipton noodle soup. I still eat it when I get sick, because I swear its the only thing that makes me feel better. Preservatives and all
I bet Murphy will love to lay on the rug…much warmer for the pug than the hardwood floors!
I was just commenting on ‘how sweet’ that my brother and I used to beg for fish sticks (her featured recipe from last night) when we were kids… but I’m pretty sure that was only bc my hippy parents only fed us whole grains and clean foods. She replied back with ‘good problem to have’ and NOW I can agree
I’d say that my favorite thing to eat as a kid was probably (this will sounds weird) but whole wheat coconut sticks (kinda like a barely sweet coconut breat with no rise..? if that makes any sense) that they sold at the market near a privtae college out in Riverside, Ca. They also had the best all natural pb you could grind there like at WF.
PB& J reminds me of childhood. Living room looks great!
When I think about my childhood meals I think of bologna & american cheese sandwiches with apple juice. But any time I microwave eggs or eat honeydew fruit I think of my grandma!
Awww. That reminded me of how my grandfather used to make me toast. Sometimes, I would wake up earlier than everyone else, and he would be up too. (Always with kleenex shoved up his nose because he always had bloody noses in the morning? Strange) Anyway, he would toast me some bread, always wheat and always super toasted. Then he would put on some chunks of butter, not bothering to spread it over the toast. Finally, he would spread a bunch of grape jelly over the toast. The taste of that toast will always remind me of him, because we always used white toast and margarine for our toast growing up.
Dunkin’ Donuts and hot chocolate. I was a heavy child.
Hi-C juice boxes….rice & raspberries (basically rice pudding but my mom would make it for us when my dad was out of town bc he hated it
)…wiener wraps (pigs in a blanket)…and pepperoni bread
so fun to remember those foods! and now you have me craving toast!
I love the $19.99 rug. I wish I lived near an IKEA, but it is probably a good thing I don’t. I am also obsessed with that bread. I buy the Pepperidge Farm cinnamon bread and I make french toast with it. It is amazing! If you haven’t tried that yet with this bread you definitely should.
Pepperidge Farm has a seasonal Cranberry Swirl bread that is my new fave!!!
My only “real” food memory from childhood is helping my mom make dressing for Thanksgiving. With 2 parents who worked long hours, food was cooked and eaten out of necessity more than for the experience. I’m hoping to make it an experience for my daughter!
It takes forever to get settled! But your house is starting to come along nicely:) I wanted to tell you about a new blog I’m writing that you may be interested in:

Chili always reminds me of my childhood. My mom makes an insane vegetarian chili!
Gotta love IKEA! And look how helpful Murphy is!!!!
I wish we had Pepperidge Farm out here. I have fond memories from my youth…
Hmmmm….probably pancakes shaped like Mickey Mouse. My Dad was really fun and creative.
Love the living room and the breakfast!

Unpacking takes SOO long!! I really love that rug though.
Soft boiled eggs remind me of my childhood. My mom used to make them for me as a treat. When I moved out she even let me take the hundred year old egg cups that I used to eat them out of.
We are sooo getting that rug! And foods from home…hmm…breakfast is always REALLY comforting, at night, bc thats what my dad would make for us for dinner when he cooked. My mom makes a mean green bean casserole and crazy good italian dishes! We used to sit on the counter whilst she was cooking and “help”.Now I’m excited to go back to the homestead so I can share my cooking skills!
My grandmother also kept raisin cinnamon bread in her kitchen! At the time, raisins were not my thing so I usually picked them out. Now though anytime I get a whiff of the bread toasting it takes me back. I’d happily eat the raisins now too.
My mom’s tomato sauce, which I still love with all my heart to this very day. Also, her Christmas cookie cutouts! Every year when we make these, I’m transported back to being 6 years old.
my mom always makes this delicious meal whenever i’m home with chicken thighs, spinach, cheese, and noodles, along with garlic and butter. she calls it “chicken thighs italiano”–it’s a recipe she slipped from the newspaper in the 1980′s and still uses to this day!
velveeta shells & cheese also bring me back to childhood, because it’s what my brother and i would “cook” for dinner when we were home alone. hahaha
If the heavy books don’t “cure” the curled rug, roll it up again, but with the right side out. Let it stay that way for a day, then unroll.
Have you tried the WHOLE WHEAT Cinnamon Raison Bread. Because it’s fabulous. And a little healthier. And you can’t even tell it’s wheat. I’m going to have to stop buying it soon because I keep plowing through loaves like they’re going out of style

(they call it cinnamon with raisins… but it does swirl.)
Homemade root beer! Not the carbonated kind. The delightfully smooth and sweet kind.
It was my grandmother’s signature.
Homemade spaghetti sauce reminds me of my childhood. I remember coming home from school and smelling it from the driveway. We would come in, grab a slice of italian bread (kept right beside the stove) and dunk it directly into the pot. Heaven!
Nilla wafers! My grandma always had some in her cupboard and I’d go after them every time I visited.
Too funny, my granmother is the same way with her raisen bread! Thinking of chilhood food, my mom always made creamed tunafish. May sound groos, but we LOVED it!
I used to love Cinnamon Raisin bread but since I got the pug, raisins are banished from the house – just because he really does get into almost everything (and the “interrogations” that he gives people when they are eating are the worst – he’s def. a foodie pug). The other smell is cinnamon sugar toast – definitely a childhood treat in my house growing up – always love to keep some in the cupboard – great for iced coffee
The living room’s looking great!
No bake oatmeal cookies remind me of my childhood. Ohh my gosh I used to eat through those thing like there was no tomorrow!
Canned peaches and english muffin pizzas remind me of being a kid!
I have two things to say about this post:
1. I LOVE cinnamon raisin bread!
2. The Green World History textbook you used to flatten your rug is the same textbook I used last year for Human History.
Thought I would share that
where did you get your straw? I want one!!
Oh yum! Except I love having bread with peanut butter. In fact, I am having whole wheat bread with cinnamon raisin peanut butter right now! YUM
I also love the pb and chocolate chips on bread thing too. Pretty much anything with peanut butter is tasty for me.
OK 2 weird things… first, that bread reminds me of the same exact thing! We would always have that at my Nana’s house for breakfast in the morning after we slept over- with real butter..yum! Also, I was in IKEA this weekend and was going to get that rug..but it cost $50 (in Australia)… I miss cheap American prices!!!!
