Dessert Duty

November 24, 2010

Guess who’s on dessert duty for Thanksgiving dinner this year?!?

This girl!!!

I got right to work as soon as I got home from Body Pump this morning. Of course, the pug didn’t want to miss a second of the baking action and stood by my feet the entire time.

The other day, my mother-in-law asked if I could make dessert for Thanksgiving dinner, and I jumped at the chance. I’m not much of a cook, but dessert I can do! :-D

IMG_0011.JPG

And I knew just what to make: my mom’s Apple Crisp and Pumpkin Cupcakes with cream cheese frosting.

IMG_0012.JPG IMG_0014.JPG

Oh, yes, it’s going to be glorious! :-D

IMG_0029.JPG

I used Wildtree’s Pumpkin Bread Mix to make the Pumpkin Cupcakes, so they’re not made from scratch, but, hey, they’ll taste delicious! ;-)

IMG_0027.JPG

I’ll make the Apple Crisp tomorrow morning, so it’s fresh, warm, and ready for a scoop of vanilla ice cream! :-D

Are you helping with Thanksgiving dinner this year? If so, what are you making?

My mom and I just made most of the desserts ahead of time today; pumpkin bars with cream cheese frosting, mini pumpkin pies bites, turkey cookies.

Dessert duty is always fun! I’m doing an appetizer (pumpkin spice cashew cheese dip), bread (first time baking a yeast bread!), and a side dish (cracklin’ cauliflower).

Happy t-day Tina!

I’m also in charge of making the dessert. In my opinion it’s the funnest cooking duty for Thanksgiving! I’m making a chocolate pumpkin bundt cake.

I am helping out by making dessert also! I made apple pie, blueberry pie, a jelly roll and a coffee cake all from scratch. It was so much fun especially to make thinks I’ve never made before! Happy Thanksgiving!

Dessert’s the best part!! My mom and I are already starting the cooking for tomorrow’s dinner. I’ll personally be in charge of the pumpkin pie :)

Yum, apple crisp sounds so delicious! My grandma always makes the pies and never lets us help. This year my sister and I were allowed to go watch her and take notes but not actually get involved. She didn’t want us to mess anything up haha

We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving here in Quebec, Canada, but as for Christmas, I’m always in charge of making desserts. I am an amateur baker as you might say. So, yes I do help during the holiday season and I love it!

i’m making a vegetarian lentil loaf and a “traditional” green bean casserole – with crispy onions and all – none of us have ever had it before!

Emily November 24, 2010 at 6:34 pm

I spent the day baking, too!! Pumpkin Pie and Cranberry Pear Pie with a Streusel on top! Tomorrow I am making a few sides and a salmon entree for myself (first vegetarian Thanksgiving). Your desserts sound awesome!! Happy Thanksgiving!!

Great dessert choices! I especially like the idea of pumpkin cupcakes over pumkin pie!

I am doing half of the menu’s sidedishes and dessert, but am saving everything for the morning. We will see how that plan of attack goes. :)

Hannah November 24, 2010 at 7:17 pm

Definitely not helping with Thanksgiving…. because we don’t celebtrate it here in Australia! I’ll definitely be helping out come Christmas time though :)

Making Bobby Flay’s pumpkin bread pudding and PW’s pecan pie. They were both featured on the throwdown episode this week. I’ve made the pie before; I know it’s fabulous. I’m super excited about the bread pudding!

I have those cupcake liners! They’re really fun- and definitely making an appearance at my Thanksgiving as well. :)

Yum! Those desserts sound awesome! I am definitely contributing to Thanksgiving this year…

My first stop I am bringing roasted brussels sprouts.

My second stop I made vegan mashed potatoes, vegan/gluten free stuffing, a vegan broccoli “cheese” casserole, gluten free gravy, and pumpkin butter oat bars with candied pecans.

Woah, I’m bringing a lot! :)

store bought icing and you are a food blogger? have you read that ingredient list?

Reply

Layla November 24, 2010 at 11:10 pm

Oh my gosh, Tina! You’re not making everything from scratch??? Didn’t you buy a cow so you could have your own milk to make your own cheese?? You’re a FOOD BLOGGER.

(This is *dripping* with sarcasm, if you can’t tell)

Hannah @ Hannah Lives November 24, 2010 at 11:24 pm

Sweet potato casserola, green bean casserole, turkey, and rolls. That is what I am tackling. I have an apple pie recipe that I’ve been dying to make, bought all of the ingredients only to find that I didn’t have a pie pan.

What’s with all the lame “food blogger” comments? Food bloggers need shortcuts too! In fact I think they need them more than the average person. Do you know how much food they make for our entertainment?! haha

We are in charge of appetizers and “something green”. We are making crostini with balsamic caramelized onions and goat cheese, our family’s favorite potstickers, and balsamic green beans with tomatoes, garlic and red onion.

Just finished in the kitchen. Making Bobby Flays pumpkin bread pudding from the throwdown challenge and my first ever apple pie. Crust was just made and is now chilling so I can roll it out in the morning. I have a salsa and dip to also make in the morning before heading to my parent’s place. Wine sounds fabulous right now!

I’m doing desserts too! We’re going the nontraditional route with banana cream pie, mud pie, and sugar cookies with pumpkin cream cheese frosting. Here are a few of my other favorite (more traditional) desserts on T-Day:

We are hosting both my family and my husbands family! I am cooking:

The turkey
shrimp cocktail
green beans with mushrooms and bacon
Kale
deviled eggs
cranberry sauce
chocolate brownie truffles

and then everyone is bringing a dish. Should be fun (or at least interesting).

This is my favorite holiday ever because in my world it’s the least stressful. No buying gifts, fake attitudes, pretending you want to be with people you really don’t. I made this decision years ago that Thanksgiving would be MY holiday. No running around houses, no inviting people who I don’t really want to invite and no fuss above what I’m comfortable with. I keep things pretty basic: Roasted turkey with a garlic & herb basting oil, mashed potatoes, mashed purple potatoes, chestnut stuffing, maple brown sugar sweet potatoes, sweet corn niblets, fresh baked rolls, pumpkin pie, chocolate pie w/oreo crust, everybody gets a chocolate turkey from our local chocolatier Romolo’s Chocolates, pickles, & this year I’m trying my cranberry sauce “Paula Deen” style… with her Layered Cranberry Sauce.

In attendance my kids, my fiance’ and me. Invited are a few friends who have no family to join but I don’t think most will end up coming; however, we always have plenty to share & when I invite someone they know I truly do enjoy their company! We’re stopping by his sister’s later with some pie for a little visiting since this year she’s going to her son’s.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!! Enjoy it with no regrets!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Fun to hear what everyone is making…

I’ve already made two appetizers–an Ultimate Spinach Dip with fresh spinach and hard boiled egg appetizers (spiced and plain).

Hope everyone enjoys!

@MelanieF: Wasn’t your Thanksgiving a week or so before? I’ve enjoyed Canadian Thanksgiving with friends before but it is a bit different. I loved the new dishes and my friend made my favorite “canadian” food… Poutine! LOL Yup, for thanksgiving!

@sam:
Uh, sometimes people are in a hurry and use convenience products because they are CONVENIENT. Also sometimes they are more cost-effective. Or someone might even have a particular taste preference for those products. Unless anyone’s suggesting eating gallon of store-bought icing for breakfast, let’s not sweat the small stuff!

Rachel @ The Avid Appetite November 25, 2010 at 10:45 am

Both sound delish! We are going to two Thanksgivings so I made 2 applesauce spice cakes with cinnamon cream cheese frosting – yum! Have a great day!

Happy belated Thanksgiving!
