It’s Peanut Butter Banana Time

September 4, 2010

Mal and I don’t know much about marathon training, but we’ve got the food thing figured out! Peanut butter and banana sandwiches rock our worlds!! :-D

IMG_0003.JPG

We both agreed that this morning’s breakfast fueled us through our 7-mile run without giving us any problems– no cramps, no stomach “issues.” Peanut butter and banana sandwiches will probably be our go-to breakfast before long runs.

IMG_0008.JPG

After a little digestion time, Mal and I headed out for our run. My husband ran with me for the first 1.5 miles, so I could show him a great running path not too far from our apartment. Once we arrived at it, he took off at his faster pace.

IMG_0253.JPG

I cruised along for the next mile or so as Mal got farther and farther away.

IMG_0254.JPG

He eventually lapped me around mile 3.3. He’s a speed demon.

IMG_0255.JPG

I ended up completing 7 miles in 1:04:00 (9:08 pace). The first 2.5 miles were really rough– my legs felt like a million pounds– but by mile 3, my “running legs” finally kicked in. I stayed around a 9:00 pace until the end of the run. My final mile was 8:47!

IMG_0009.JPG

Here’s Mal’s recap of his run:

7 miles: 54:25 (7:46 pace)

Ate my usual PB&B sandwich and had a 1/2 glass of coffee.  My stomach felt great.  I had a good warmup with T.  My goal this week was to make the second half of my run faster than the first half.  I tried to increase my pace with each mile that I ran and almost succeeded.  The last mile was slower because a lot of it was up-hill.  I should have paid a little more attention to my pace on the last mile.  Overall, I’m really happy with my run.  Here are my splits: 8:49, 8:29, 7:50, 7:26, 7:22, 7:13, 7:17.

When I got home, I stretched and rehydrated while Murphy took advantage of my salty skin.

IMG_0012.JPG

He even licked me while I stretched. What a freak.

IMG_0014.JPG

Now, I’m drinking a chocolate protein shake with iced coffee and soymilk in the mix.

We’re off to play with Batman this afternoon!!

Happy Saturday! 8-)

Peanut Butter & Banana…I do believe there is no better combo, unless of course there is chocolate added to the mix! :) Have a great weekend and good luck with the house!

peanut butter and banana is my “go-to” before long runs and races. always satisfying! I love that Murphy licks the sweat when you get finished. I did 7.5miles this am and both of my dogs went nuts when I got home… you just have to love them to pieces!!! They’re hilarious! Sounds like your training is coming along great!!! Keep up the great work! enjoy!!!

PB & Banana is such a great mix. I was spinning early this morning, but got too hungry so I had PB & Banana on toast then went back to spinning. It fills you up but isn’t too heavy. I love it :)

haha isn’t it funny how much dogs love salty sweat!!? Ew. My cat even tries to lick me sometimes.
Great job on the run!

PB and banana in oatmeal is my pre-run fuel of choice!

Tina you and Mal are so speedy — I can’t wait to hear more about your training.

My husband just walked by and saw pics of Murphy “he’s so cute!”

banana is good for the muscles :)

murphy is weird but adorable still…my brother would surely love him (he loves to have a pug)

do males always run faster than females? i guess it has something to do with muscles :)

enjoy training!!! :)

Impressive times! Great work! :) I would love some training advice… My husband and I are training for our first half-marathon in November, and I’ve been getting up early and running as well (although I push a stroller with our one year old up and down hills so I am not so fast…! :P ). My husband takes off before eating, but I need my food! I’m still trying to figure out the whole bfast before running thing though so I loved seeing your post…A couple questions: how long do you wait after eating before you run? And how much water do you drink before? Also, what’s your advice for refueling during a race? Do you need to be taking in calories during a 13.1 mile race? Thanks! :P

allie September 4, 2010 at 2:42 pm

great run! you both are very speedy. are you guys going to stick together for the marathon, or will you run separately? my go to is banana with PB too (altho not in a sammie). i can eat it and run out the door in 20 minutes. perfect running fuel!

faith @ gracefulfitness September 4, 2010 at 3:19 pm

Yumm, peanut butter and banana sammies! Add a little honey and you have about the makeup of about 75% of my diet from the ages of 8 to 12!! :)

Reply

Vicki September 4, 2010 at 4:03 pm

We love pb &b too, but I’ve never cut the banana that way. I always cut it in half and then cut that in half length wise so I have 4 long pieces. My husband sometimes adds a little mayo too!

Katie (Sweets and Veggies) September 4, 2010 at 4:10 pm

Great job on you and Mal’s run!! I’m so impressed that you can run for that amount of time. I don’t think I would be able to do it. Looks like training is working well though, keep it up girl!

I ate PB & Banana sandwiches before all my long runs when I trained for my marathon last year. It’s perfect. My favorite post-run meal was whole wheat toast with scrambled eggs on top since my stomach couldn’t handle too much right after my really long runs. That at least got a little good protein/carbs in me until I could eat more later.
