80′s Fitness Fads

August 11, 2010

Home sweet home. I loved waking up in my own bed and enjoying a homemade breakfast with a pug sleeping on my lap. It doesn’t get better than that! :-D

This morning, I enjoyed a wonderful bowl of overnight oats and a glass of toasted coconut iced coffee with vanilla soymilk.

In the mix:

  • 1/4 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1/4 cup oat bran
  • 1/2 cup vanilla soymilk
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Walnuts
  • Chocolate-covered cranberries
  • Barney Butter

I’ve been meaning to write this post for awhile, so I apologize if it seems a bit random or out of place. Even still, I swear it’ll be fun! ;-)  I wrote this post while participating in a blog campaign by Kraft’s Crystal Light Pure Fitness and FitnessMagazine.com compensated me for my participation in this project. Opinions expressed are all my own.

80′s Fitness Fads

As you know, I recently made three workout videos for Fitness Magazine where we tried some fun, new fitness trends: hula hooping, retro–robics, and belly dancing workouts. You can see me in action here!

I had a ton of fun trying the new workouts. I especially liked hula hooping because it reminded me of being a kid and playing outside in the yard. How fun were some of those toys we had as kids?! I’d play and play and not even realize that I was exercising. For instance, Get In Shape Girl was one of my favorite “games.” I actually blogged about my love for it back in March.

Besides Get In Shape Girl, I loved my Pogo Ball.

And Skip-It. Remember this thing?

My sister actually owned the Skip-It, so, of course, there were plenty of fights over it. She was actually really, really good at it, and I’d always steal it from her and try to beat her score, but I never even came close.

And, of course, there was the Pocket Rocker.

On the website with my exercise videos, you can enter to win $500 in the Fitness Magazine and Crystal Light Pure Fitness sweepstakes. All you need to do is answer “What’s your best trick for staying hydrated?” Seems easy enough, right?

Question of the Day

What’s your favorite fitness game/toy from your childhood?

OMG! This is the best post ever! It totally made my day! I seriously thought that I was the only one who had Get In Shape Girl, and I adored my Skip-It and Pogo Ball! Such a fun flashback…thanks Tina. :)

My pogo ball and skip it were awesome! I was an only child and I could play on those things forever!!!

I think it was called Lemon Twister…it was a rubber loop to put on one foot with a plastic lemon at the other end and you had to kick it around and jump over the lemon. I just thought it was fun but thinking back not it was actually a great cardio workout. =)

Oh man, I had the pogo ball and the skip-it! (I wasn’t spoiled, I promise!) I loved BOTH of those! Thanks for bringing back some great childhood memories :-)

Gosh, this is the moment where I start feeling left out for being 10 year younger than most of you here – I don’t remember any of these! They look awesome though. Especially the Pocket Rocker. And I do remember the pogo ball! :D

I loved Skip-It! The first thing I ever saved my allowance for was a hot pink Skip-it. I think it was $10, and it took me FOREVER but I did it!

I LOVED my purple and neon green pogo ball! I used to jump rope while on my pogo ball.
I didn’t have a skip it, but I had a hoop it which I loved as well.
Good memories!

I was in love with pogo sticks and skip its. I loved how we had no idea that it was actually exercise.

Tina, do you remember the 80s fitness program called Callanetics? I just got back into it a little recently, and it’s actually fantastic! Super low impact body weight resistance exercises that are easy on the back and joints and reinforce good posture, so it’s perfect for an Opera Girl. Love it.

OMG you brought back some memories. I had a skip it and a pogo ball and LOVED both of them. It was wonderful when we did stuff for fun and really didn’t reralize that itw as exercise, lol!

I didn’t have a Skip It, but I do remember the commercial. One of my friends had something similar, but with a lemon on the end … and no counter. For fitness toys, I’d have to go with a plain old jump rope. I used to jump rope at every recess (until Rubik’s Cubes made the scene. Then we had races to see who could solve a side fastest.)

Ohhh Skip-It. The jingle haunts me! I loved my pink Skip-it, too. I’d get very possessive when friends would come over and want to use it. I dominated that thing. Maybe we should find some for HLS and get a little “work out” in during breaks?? Anyone, anyone? :)

Tina August 11, 2010 at 10:48 am

Ahhh the skip-it. I think that and hula hooping were my favorites. Sad that kids toys now aren’t as “athletic”. They need it!

I spent many happy hours with my skip-it and pogo ball! I was a big tree climber too. Did anyone else play “helicopter” with a jumprope?

I just about died last year when I tried to take on the skip it at recess one day (I’m a 3rd grade teacher). It was so easy as a kid–a game! Now it’s a real workout. Hmmmm, maybe I should pick that back up this school year. Ha.

Oooh, I LOVED this post!!! I grew up in the 90s (sadly I was not even alive in the 80s, missed it by one year!) and I was all over skip-it. I remember being in my backyard and doing that thing for hours. Maybe that was why I was such a skinny child. haha

How funny, I was totally just thinking of my pogo ball the other day and singing the song from the commerical, hahaha.

I loved the pogo ball but my favorite fitness fad from my childhood was my get in shape girl stuff. I had the ballet bar on my bedroom door and would pretend to be a dancer!

I absolutely adored the skip-it as a child. Though, they would frequently break due to being comprised of cheap plastic material. I have many memories of my Dad reattaching the head to the rope in his tool shed.

Love me some Skip It! What a fun toy!

Also, I tried Overnight Oats for the first time today and Holy Yum! What a great little idea! I made some homemade Almond Butter to go it is as well as a little brown sugar. Ah, my life is complete. Have a great day!

The good ol’ days! I had a SkipIt and loved it! We were so active when we were younger – riding bike literally all day, playing tennis and catch and dodge ball and so much more. Wish I had time for all that now (and the energy).
