Celebrating Two Years

July 11, 2010

Mal and I had a blast celebrating our 2-year wedding anniversary last night. I must say, I really have the best husband ever. He’s kind and caring, handsome, and he constantly makes me laugh. Plus, we always have so much fun together!

Mal and I were invited to spend the night at Hotel Veritas in Harvard Square. The hotel’s Guest Services Manager, Sarah, is an avid Carrots ‘N’ Cake reader and offered to put us up for the night.

Hotel Veritas is a 30-room independent hotel located in Harvard Square. The exterior of the hotel is a reconstruction of a car repair shop and a house built in the 1880′s. Kinda cool, right?

_MG_4042.JPG _MG_4043.JPG

The hotel has an awesome patio outside. Mal and I did some serious people-watching from it last night! ;-)

Inside, the entire look and feel of the hotel is both elegant and modern.

_MG_3963.JPG _MG_3975.JPG

Our room was gorgeous! :-D

_MG_3933.JPG

_MG_3934.JPG

And it had fresh flowers and fancy bath products. Score! :-D

After getting settled in our room, Mal and I headed downstairs to the lounge, which is called Simple Truth. It was a great place to enjoy a glass of wine and enjoy some good conversation.

_MG_3981.JPG

_MG_3982.JPG

_MG_3983.JPG

The lounge is absolutely stunning and featured a “white Belgium limestone fireplace, thirteen-foot-high windows, and a French limestone floor quarried in the 19th century.” It was fancy, but also very laid-back and relaxing.

_MG_3986.JPG

_MG_3987.JPG

The lounge is open to the public and serves beer, wine, and cocktails as well as artisan cheeses and charcuterie from the Formaggio Kitchen. Mal and I hung out there for a little while before we went to dinner in Harvard Sqaure.

_MG_3988.JPG

While we looked over the menu, Mal and I munched on some honey roasted peanuts.

_MG_3997.JPG

We started with a round of drinks. I ordered a glass of Chardonnay; he ordered a beer.

_MG_4004.JPG

Hi, Mal! :-D

_MG_4008.JPG

_MG_4012.JPG

Mal was really impressed with the beer list at Simple Truth. He had a tough time deciding what to chose, but, in the end, he went with the Berkshire Brewing Coffeehouse Porter.

_MG_4019.JPG

We also ordered a cheese plate with a selection of three Vermont cheeses, organic strawberries, nuts, cornichons, and a locally-made black and blueberry jam– all of which was so delicious. I <3 cheese plates.

_MG_4026.JPG

The cheese plate also included crackers and marinated olives on the side.

_MG_4028.JPG

_MG_4029.JPG

IMG_4032.JPG

After eating some small bites in the lounge, we walked over to the Russell House Tavern for dinner.

_MG_4044.JPG

We ordered another round of drinks.

_MG_4051.JPG

And munched on fresh bread with olive oil and rosemary.

_MG_4054.JPG

Since we had already enjoyed an appetizer at Hotel Veritas, Mal and I shared the The Farmer’s Pie, which was made with an herb purée (pesto) and seasonal vegetables. It was to die for!! I tasted a hit of nutmeg, which was an amazing flavor combination with the bold pesto and cheese flavors.

_MG_4060.JPG

_MG_4061.JPG

Mal and I got a little silly at dinner!

_MG_4092.JPG

_MG_4090.JPG

I was STUFFED after eating a cheese plate and half of a pizza, but when our server brought the dessert menu to our table, I knew that I could make room for the Carrot Cake Bread Pudding. (Remember my extra dessert stomach? ;-) ) Mal and I ate every last morsel of the Carrot Cake Bread Pudding.

_MG_4112.JPG

After dinner, Mal and I returned to the Hotel Veritas. We were having such a great time, we didn’t want to go to bed just yet, so ordered a couple of glasses of wine and sipped them while chatting outside on the patio.

_MG_4117.JPG

Sarah came outside to say goodbye before her shift finished for the night. We ended up chatting with her and one of the concierges for quite a while. Everyone we met on staff at the hotel was super friendly.

IMG_4123.JPG

The silliness continued well into the night!

IMG_4134.JPG IMG_4136.JPG

When Mal and I returned to our room a couple of hours later, we found a special something waiting for us. The hotel staff surprised us with a bottle of champagne and some treats to celebrate our anniversary!

_MG_4150.JPG

We cracked opened the bottle and continued our anniversary celebration.

_MG_4154.JPG

Spending the night at a local hotel was a wonderful way to celebrate our anniversary. It felt like a mini vacation, but we were just a few miles from home. Thanks, Sarah, for inviting us! :-D

I know these hotels want to get their name out there by having you stay at them, but it would nice if they offered some kind of discount for your readers. I’m actually headed up to Boston in a few weeks and I personally would be much more inclined to stay at one of these hotels if they offered some kind of promotion.

Local vacations in a nice hotel are the best! I’m so glad you two had so much fun celebrating your anniversary – congratulations and best wishes for many more years to come.
