Stretch & Shag

June 10, 2010

Hi, guys! 8-) Get ready for a marathon blog post!!

Workout

So, I really like the new gym I’ve been trying out, but I don’t want to shell out $59 each month for it. It’s super convenient and there are SO many classes to choose from. I’ll probably just enjoy my 2-week membership and think about joining when the weather turns cold. Having all of those classes will help with cross-training when I am training for the Boston Marathon (as long as a charity picks me up to run with them).

At the gym, I did my favorite 45-minute Treadmill Workout. I love this workout so much, I practically have it memorized, but I always take a copy of it to the gym just in case. (I printed it out and taped it to a piece of cardboard.) It’s a little beat-up, but it does the trick!

IMG_0002.JPG

I’m not going to lie, the RUN option of this workout really had me huffing and puffing today. Running is a totally different cardio experience than other forms of exercise. I guess my body is a bit out of practice. :-? Even still, I pushed myself through 45-minutes without stopping. I even picked up the pace on a few intervals and covered almost 4.25 miles. So, I guess it was the varying inclines that really killed me. I hate hills!

After my run, I did a little bit of stretching at the gym. I used the foam roller and then the Stretch Trainer. Have you seen the Stretch Trainer at your gym? Well, you should make friends with it because it’s awesome! ;-) You can pretty much stretch every part of your body using it. It feels soooo good on my lower back.

240i_1.png

When I got home from the gym, I continued to stretch. (I’m convinced that all of this stretching is going to help me accomplish my goal!)

The treadmill workout that I did involved lots of inclines, so I started with the Tiger Tail to stretch my quads. The Tiger Tail is a rolling muscle massager that helps relieve sore, tight, cramping, fatigued, and stiff muscles. It’s great for your legs! Like a foam roller, it helps you perform deep tissue massage and trigger point therapy on yourself, but it doesn’t take up as much room in your house. I actually throw mine in a drawer in the living room for easy access.

IMG_0001.JPG

I couldn’t take photos of myself using the Tiger Tail, so here are a few examples from The Pressure Positive Company.

TTQuad01.jpg tiger-tail-2-300x264.jpg

I also use the Tiger Tail to roll my tight IT bands, which I did plenty of this morning. You can basically roll it over any tight muscle on your body and adjust the pressure as needed.

I finished off my 20 minutes of stretching by using the Yoga Tune Up Balls, which are perfect for getting the smaller muscles in the front and side of my hips. Like I always say: It hurts so good! ;-)

Lunch

For lunch, I ate cookies. Yep, cookies. I had a craving for them, so I put a bunch on a plate, along with a couple of slices of watermelon, and called it a meal. Why not, right? I mean, the Oatmeal Blueberry Cookies had some healthy-ish stuff in them. It wasn’t the worst option for lunch, right? ;-)

IMG_0003.JPG

Sometimes, you just need to eat cookies for lunch.

Shag Boston

After lunch, I went to get my hair highlighted at Shag, a hip and modern salon in South Boston.

IMG_0007.JPG

Shag is really cool inside– exposed brick, stainless steal everywhere, and splashes of vibrant color here and there. The staff is super cool, too. I actually felt a little bit out of place with my “weekend” jeans and boring, old t-shirt. I sort of wished that I put in some more effort in today. Oh, well. No one seemed to notice.

Ok, so let me tell you how I got hooked up with Shag. Remember my friend, Hannah? Well, her sister, Tasha, is a haircolorist at there and she’s looking to increase her cliental. Tasha offered to color my hair in return for blogging about my experience. I’m always happy to help out a friend, so, of course, I agreed. Plus, my hair was really starting to bother me. It was so blah, even after I used boxed dye on it a few weeks ago. My hair definitely needed an “upgrade.”

IMG_0010.JPG

Let me start off by saying that I am very weary of highlights. A few years ago, I got them done and it was a complete and utter disaster!!! I had orange streaks throughout my hair! I told the stylist that I didn’t like how they looked, so he tried to soften them, but it still looked terrible. I tried to get used to my new look over the next couple of weeks, but I just couldn’t stand the way my hair looked. Eventually, I bought hair dye from CVS and dyed over the highlights, and I haven’t tried anything “crazy” with my hair ever since.

So, when Hannah approached me about getting my hair highlighted by her sister, I told her my highlight horror story. She assured me that her sister would not steer me wrong… and she was completely right! :-D

Tasha was amazing. Before she even touched my hair with dye, she talked to me quite a bit about how I wanted my highlights to look. Again, I recounted my highlight horror story and told her that I wanted them to look natural and be easy to keep up with (aka not cost me a fortune once it starts to grow out). Tasha threw out the words “caramel” and “low-maintenance,” so I knew I was in good hands.

Tasha worked her magic and meticulously selected pieces of my hair to highlight. She even considered how I style and part my hair. Once she was finished with the foil, I chilled with a magazine and a cappuccino while the hair dye did its thing.

IMG_0015.JPG

I felt so spoiled! :-D

IMG_0016.JPG

A couple of hours later, I fell in love with my hair. I’m very happy with it. Seriously, I’m enjoying the best hair day of my life (as some of you already heard about on Twitter). Here’s a shot of my very natural-looking caramel highlights. I’ll take some good shots of my hair tomorrow night. ;-)

Snack

When I got home, I was so hungry! Even though they were delicious, my cookies and watermelon didn’t hold me over until dinnertime. I ended up grabbing a Siggi’s from the fridge and throwing in some Cranberry Orange Galaxy Granola. Mmm! I loved the sour + fruity flavors.

IMG_0001.JPG

Dinner

For dinner, I ate a bowl of Lentils with Penne, Brussels Sprouts, and Feta that I cooked last night. It was just as delicious as leftovers. And, now I want something sweet! ;-)

IMG_0018.JPG

Jeez, Louise! Longest post ever! 8-O

I’m relaxing for the rest of the night. I have a big day tomorrow!

I am looking forward to seeing your hair styled – the pic showing the highlights looks very pretty! I have dark brown hair also and have always been afraid to do that – it seems like it works better for people with light brown or blonde hair (have seen some people with dark hair having the orange highlights you were describing – that is NOT natural looking!)

Good hair days are so encouraging! :) I have had my fair share of hair horror stories too, but am currently loving my hair (it’s long and light auburn, a huuuuge departure for me, who had never before dyed her hair).

Awesome run, too. It’s so inspiring to read about how diligent you are with your stretching. I could definitely stand to learn a tip or two from you :) I must say, I also swear by Tiger Tail! It works wonders on my IT bands.

Hmm, forgot to mention that your hair looks lovely (that was the intended main point of my previous post). I’m such an airhead sometimes!

I love the Tiger Tail – actually better than the foam roller!

That is a long post! But I liked it:) Pretty hair!

Is the Tiger Tail any different than the Foam Roller?

And I’ve seen that machine at my gym but had no idea what it is. Now I’ll have to try it!

Your hair looks SO GOOD!!!!
And the Tiger Tail sounds really interesting, i’ve never heard of it before. And I think it’s so awesome that you are running the Chicago marathon, it’s one of my goals! And I have an injury too so I know what it’s like.

Your hair is shagadelic baby! Sorry I’m a huge fan of Austin Powers and it had to be said. I do love the hair though, I always wanted caramel highlights but my hairdresser wouldn’t do them for me! She said they were too high maintenance for me as I’m a wash and go type person.

I get so nervous when I’m coloring my hair. I’ve had it turn out black before. I have blue tones in my skin so I pretty much looked like I was dead. Eeek.

omg Tina, I would KILL for a $59 membership fee! Mine is $79.99 and it’s definitely less than most of my friends in SF. BTW, I go to Crunch, which is funny, since apparently that’s who designed the treadmill workout you love :)

LOVE the hair color!
Where did you find that treadmill workout? I would love to have something like that when I go to the gym.

shag looks so chic: your true identity of course. I’d be intimidated by that stretch machine. I use a muscle roller called “the stick” and love it

Your hair looks so nice! Very subtle and natural.

I used to go to a salon that made me feel like I should dress up and actually do my hair BEFORE going in. I stopped going because they decided they were too cool and upped their pricing. Plus I just got tired of the attitude.

Hee. I have to admit I blinked a bit when I saw the title of this post on my Reader. I was wondering where the stretching section was going! “Shag” would be a fairly tongue-in-cheek name for a hair salon here (New Zealand), although the word isn’t used much any more and was never as popular a slang term as it was in Britain, I don’t think! :) Is it a slang term in America too, or just the UK? Your hair looks great, by the way! (And I’ve very frequently eaten oat biscuits (cookies) for lunch, so no shame here! I often make biscuits with oats, applesauce, baking powder, cinnamon, maple syrup, beaten egg and chopped prunes, and have a couple along with a bowl of soup or some fruit too. Seems like a fairly balanced lunch to me! :)

I’m the same way about my hair. I recently did the same type of thing on my blog (friend is a hairdresser at Emerge on Newbury St.) you should check out my post! I chopped off 11 inches. My hair is dark like yours and I’m all about the red tints (i die, not highlight). I bet a little bit of red would look fun in your hair!

Apparently, I have a lot to say on your long post. I read that same glamour at the salon (different salon, I go to aveda joi for waxing). Jessica Biel? LOVE Lavazza? All I drank in france. LOVE.

Cookies for lunch are totally legit. I had a cookie for breakfast – not a healthy, breakfast “cookie” that you see floating around the blog world, but a real life choc chip cookie made with white flour and butter, the size of my palm. And it was amazing. Sometimes, life just calls for a meal of cookies.

Oh no – THE 45-minute treadmill workout! :-) I say “THE” because I got it from your website a couple years ago, I believe, and used to love to do it every once in a while… up until when I did it this past fall and really aggravated my knee/IT band. I have “banned” it from my workout options since then! The workout itself did not “cause” my injury, but it really pushed it over the edge! So, my advice to others – make sure you listen to your body (duh… I know) when doing this or any other more difficult workout and don’t be afraid to take it down a few notches… I did not follow this advice and really messed with an underlying injury. If you can handle the workout (a lot of inclines) – go for it – it worked well for me when my body was “fully healthy”! :-)

I’ve actually never dyed my hair! It’s already pretty redish (auburn?) but I’d love to get it a little more in that direction. Maybe I’ll take the plunge this summer? Not sure.
