Opening Day 2010

April 5, 2010

Ahh! I absolutely loved Red Sox Opening Day! What a cool experience! I’m so glad that my husband decided to take me! ;-)

IMG_0001.JPG

I showed my Boston spirit by wearing my favorite Red Sox hat.

Before heading to the game, Mal and I grabbed a quick dinner at Sol Azteca, a Mexican restaurant located right down the street from Fenway Park.

IMG_0025.JPG

Dinner started with complimentary chips and salsa.

IMG_0030.JPG

I loved the salsa at Sol Azteca. It was incredibly fresh and flavorful, so (not surprisingly) it was really tough to control myself, but I didn’t overdo it either.

IMG_0032.JPG IMG_0036.JPG

Mal is always a fun dinner date!

IMG_0042.JPG

IMG_0043.JPG

I was in the mood for Mexican food, but I wanted to try something new and different. I ended up ordering the Nopalitos en Salsa Verda, which was cactus cooked in green sauce with tortilla strips and cheese.

IMG_0026.JPG

The meal sounded really interesting and potentially delicious, but I wasn’t a fan of it. I guess I made a bad menu choice. :-?

IMG_0046.JPG

The cactus sort of reminded of pickled green beans and the tortilla strips were totally soggy. It was not at all what I expected. Boo.

IMG_0047.JPG

I ended up eating all of the cheese off of the top with tortilla chips. It wasn’t the best meal, but it was fairly satisfying. Thankfully, Mal shared some of his rice and refried beans with me, too.

IMG_0050.JPG

After dinner, it was time to head to the game! :-D

IMG_0052.JPG

I loved seeing the crowd of people on Yawkey Way this evening. Everyone seemed so upbeat and excited for Opening Day– and, of course, Red Sox = summer to me! ;-)

IMG_0055.JPG

The opening ceremonies were awesome! I’ve never seen anything like it.

IMG_0065.JPG

As the Red Sox players were introduced, they walked down a red carpet onto the field.

IMG_0066.JPG

IMG_0067.JPG

IMG_0070.JPG

Pedro Martinez threw out the first pitch, which was a really neat surprise for Red Sox fans. Also in attendance were 91-year-old Johnny Pesky, Steven Tyler, who sang God Bless America, and Neil Diamond, who sang Sweet Caroline. So many celebrities!

IMG_0072.JPG

IMG_0075.JPG

Midway through the game, Mal and I shared a bag of Cracker Jacks. Holy yum! I forgot how much I like Cracker Jacks. I already added them to my grocery list for this coming week.

IMG_0077.JPG

IMG_0061.JPG

The game went soooooo late tonight, but the Red Sox were able to pull off a win! YAY!!! What a great way to begin the season!

Time for BED!

Omg omg omg!! Do you have any Steven Tyler pictures??? I would seriously kill for them. No joke, I’ve loved him for most of my life!

Bummer about the cactus :( I had cactus when I studied abroad in Mexico and loved it! Perhaps it was the way they cooked it or just different taste buds. At least the game was a blast!

I saw them cook cactus on the Food Network once. It sounded so wierd to me but I guess it was because apparently it was no good! The game looks fun though. You look so cute and athletic in your hat :)

Yay for opening day!! I’m a die hard Cardinals fan, so although I don’t want the bo-sox to win, I want ANYONE to win over the freakin Yankees!!! :-) Glad you had fun!

Yay baseball! I am an Indians fan, but I decided the Red Sox are my #2 because you guys got my favorite player, Victor Martinez. :D Looks like fun!!

So much fun! I’ve never even been to a baseball game before but it looks like a great experience.

Sounds like fun! Baseball isn’t so popular up here in Canada (hello hockey!) but I remember when I was younger, a relative from the states sent me a Cardinal’s hat for my Birthday. That is about my only relation to baseball! I love watching the Vancouver Canucks though. :)

What a fun day — never tried cactus, though. It’s always cool to try something new, sorry it wasn’t delicious.

Fun! We could hear the opening fireworks from our apartment, and the game was a good one.

We actually went to Sol Azteca on Saturday with some friends, and LOVED it. The salsa is the best in the city, the sangria is delicious, and we all adored the food. Great spot for dinner!

Awww, one of my favorite things in life is going to ball games. Though I’m not a huge fan of basball itself, I love the ballpark atmosphere. It’s a tradition every summer for my Dad and me. Looks like you two had a blast! And yes, Cracker Jacks are just rad.

Lauren April 5, 2010 at 6:42 am

Yay for opening day!!! Love baseball season!

Tina, I just wanted to tell you that I know you’ve been feeling a bit down lately with a little overindulgence, but honestly, you look sensational!!!! Truly, you look so healthy and happy and better than I have ever seen you. You are working so hard and doing amazing and I truly commend you for being honest and sharing that you have those days when you eat one too many brownies but that’s okay!!!!!!! Thank you for making living like this seem normal. I couldn’t be more proud of you.

Take care always!

I could hear the fireworks from our roof over at Fenway! Looks like it was an awesome start to the season. Nothing like Sox + Spring in Boston. :)

Oh what fun!!! I need to take my boys to a baseball game. They are both finally at the age where they would enjoy it. Seriously, you can never go wrong with cracker jacks! Best baseball game treat if you ask me!

The game looks like a ton of fun! One thing we are lacking in my city is a good Mexican restaurant. Looks super!

How do you manage to look good in a baseball cap? I always look like a boy! Arlington is going crazy for baseball season starting today. The Ballpark is going to be packed but I’ll admit I’m not a big baseball fan as I am with football.

how fun! i’ve never been, but it seems like the Red Sox are such a HUGE part of boston…that’s so fun you got to go on opening night! sorry about the bad menu choice…that sucks when that happens. but at least you’ll know for next time!

So sad the nopales sucked- that’s one thing I miss dearly from living on the Tex-Mex border. They’re DELICIOUS when made right!

And sorry, but… go Yankees ;)

I’m jealous! my hometown Blue Jays don’t play their home opener until the 12th, but I don’t think I can go this year (sad!) The start of Baseball season always makes me feel like summer is just around the corner, and I get as excited as a kid at Christmas the week before the opening game!! Glad you had a great time!!

Yay I was at the game too! I had to leave early though because I was absolutely exhausted! Of course they were losing when I left and then I heard cheering as I walked out – go figure! I almost lost it when they announced that Steven Tyler was going to sing!

Can I just say I am super jealous! But Red Sox baseball definitely equals summer to me too :-)

I’m glad you had fun at the game! It was a really great game once the boys got into the swing of things and you had really great seats! I love baseball. I’m so glad it’s back! I’ve never been to Sol Azteca but I will keep your menu choice in mind as what NOT to get if I go. :)

SW April 5, 2010 at 10:21 am

Eeew, the cactus doesn’t look very tasty in that picture (looks like the canned kind?) I think it will probably taste better fresh, and not swimming in a greasy mess! If you ever have the chance, try cactus in a taco, you might end up liking it.

Thank you for this glimpse into Americana! As an Aussie, my only experience with baseball is through Gene Kelly in the movie Take Me Out to the Ballgame. Which, coincidentally, mentions cracker jacks in the title song, of course!

P.S. This is really weird to say, but you have amazing teeth! :P

So exciting you all got to go to opening day!!! Living in Indiana it may seem odd to be a Red Sox fan, but my boyfriend is an ultimate fan! We were definately watching last night!!
