Happy Hour at Abby Park

April 3, 2010

Yesterday’s weather was absolutely AMAZING! I still can’t get over it. It put me in such a fantastic mood all day long. :-D It’s funny how weather can do that, isn’t it?

In the late afternoon, Mal and I decided to have an impromptu date night and go out to dinner. We walked to the restaurant so we could continue to enjoy the wonderful weather.

On our walk, we encountered so many signs of spring. It’s almost here!!!

Mal and I took our time walking, chatting, enjoying the sunshine, and, of course, snapping photos. Eventually, we arrived at Abby Park in East Milton Square.

Handsome date.

Abby Park offers a special $5 menu from 3:00 – 5:00 pm (website says 3:00 – 6:00 pm) everyday at the bar. The menu includes 7 different appetizer dishes, each of which cost just $5.

DSC_0034.JPG

To start, I ordered a glass of Gruner Veltliner from Austria, which was light and citrusy, but sort of dry, which is just the way I like white wine! ;-)

Mal had a 7 & 7.

To eat, we shared a couple of appetizers from the Happy Hour menu:

Dip trio with chickpea & lemon hummus, white bean & rosemary, olive & sun-dried tomato tapenade served with crispy flatbread

Curried chicken & cashew croquettes with honey-cilantro yogurt dip

Both appetizers were delicious, especially for the price! Mal said the chicken croquettes reminded him of crab cakes, which I agreed with for the texture, but flavor wasn’t fishy at all. The croquettes had a sweet, curried chicken flavor. They were very good.

One of the bartenders hooked us up with some dinner rolls to finish off the dips from the Dip Trio. I really loved the white & rosemary dip, while Mal dominated the other two. We ended up devouring them!

Mal and I were having such a nice time at Happy Hour, we decided to extend our date with a round of “dessert” cocktails. I ordered an Oatmeal Cookie Martini and he ordered another 7 & 7.

IMG_0010.JPG

The Oatmeal Cookie Martini was fabulous! It tasted more like a butterscotch cookie that an oatmeal cookie, but I still really enjoyed it.

Mal and I ended up hanging out at the bar for nearly 3 hours, sipping cocktails and enjoying life. I love date night!

Saturday is going to be another busy one, but it’s starting with massages downtown!!!

Wow, what beautiful weather you’re having! Pouring rain here….
You’re so lucky to be able to walk to a restuarant (and a lovely looking one at that) – my nearest one is a 20min drive!
Have a great day :)

Hi Tina,
I’m a faithful reader of your blog each day, though this is my first time commenting. I just wanted to say that it is such an absolute delight to read your blog, especially this entry, which placed a smile on my face. It’s so refreshing to see someone embracing life and living it to the fullest. It’s inspiring to me, someone who has struggled to find my place in life, and questions my decisions on a regular basis. I can only hope that one day I can find someone who complements me the way Mal completes you. Thanks for writing such an inspiring blog!

- Melissa

Ah everything in this post sounds fantastic… the weather, the food, the ambiance, the company! I have a question though, and since you’re such a pro ;) I figured you’d be a good one to ask: How do you keep yourself from stuffing your face after happy hour or even a night out? I always feel like I get home and have a seemingly fourth meal of the day. And I certainly don’t want to get into that kind of habit. Thank you :)

We go to a restaurant that has a similar three dip appetizer of white bean dip, kidney bean dip, and traditional tapenade served with warm pita bread. It’s really yummy and satisfying :) Glad you had a great date night and have a great weekend!
