I think I may have recreated the Grilled Banana Sandwich from Mike & Patty’s!! Welllll, I came pretty close. Theirs is still better!
Mike & Patty’s actually uses a cinnamon-sugar butter that they spread all over the bread (inside and out). Plus, they do something special to the banana slices that makes them all gooey and sweet. I guess mine is the Lazy (Wo)Man’s Grilled Banana Sandwich.

Grilled Banana Sandwich
Makes 1
Ingredients:
- 2 slices whole wheat bread
- 1 banana, sliced
- 2 tbsp canola oil
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- Cinnamon
Directions:
- Combine canola oil, brown sugar, vanilla extra, and about 1 tsp of cinnamon in a small bowl. Mix until it becomes a brown sugar paste.
- Heat a fry pan on medium heat and coat with non-stick cooking spray.
- Spread half of the brown sugar mixture on the outside of one piece of bread. Put the brown sugar side face down in the fry pan. Meanwhile, add the banana slices, a tiny bit of the brown sugar paste, and more cinnamon.
- Take the second piece of bread and cover the outside with the remaining brown sugar paste. Then place it on top of the banana slices (brown sugar side facing up).
- Press sandwich with a spatula and flip to cook the other side.
- Cook until outside of sandwich is lightly browned and crispy.
- Allow to cool and enjoy!

Ohmigod, this sandwich was delicious! The bread was amazing– soft yet sweet and crispy on the outside. It’s a MUST-TRY!
I also drank some iced coffee with breakfast.

Mid-morning, I snacked on a big ol’ pancake, which was leftover from Mal’s breakfast. (We did our own thing this morning.)

My hip is feeling a bit better lately, so I’m heading out for a short run now.
See ya!

That grilled banana sandwich looks so good! I think I’ll have that for lunch today!! = )
The sandwich looks delish, but I think I’ll try w/ less oil and sugar. Maybe not quite the same texture/flavor, but three tablespoons of oil seems like a lot.
Yum! It reminds me of a banana foster in sandwich form. Definitely going to try it out and see how it goes!
From what I remember, the bananas seemed to be caramelized inside the sammy. Maybe cook them on the side for a minute or two, doused in some of the sugar/oil combo?
God, that sounds good right now!
OMG this looks so yummy! I love your blog! I am a total newby but your posts are so inspirational and so down to earth. Love it. Hailey
That banana sandwich looks delicious. I sometimes forget that cooked bananas are so tasty!
That looks amazing and I’m pretty sure it’ll be my breakfast next sunday!
Great sandwich! I saw Caitlin do a version too…I’ve tried that one, so I’ll have to try this one too and compare
mmm~ i love grilled banana sandwiches. looks delish! hope the run is fantastic. have a great sunday, tina
Yummy! That reminds me of one of my favorite childhood foods, cinnamon toast
(toast with butter and cinnamon sugar).
I made a banana nutella coconut wrap for breakfast today…similar prep except in a Joseph’s tortilla with the afformentioned ingredients
tasty!
Wow both of those look good, but especially the banana sandwich. Looks heavenly for s Sunday morning.
That banana sandwich looks amazing!!! I must try it.
Oh YUM! That sandwich. Seriously, what could be bad with that combination??? Have a great run!
I would have dunked that sammie in a jar of nut butter!! WEEE!!
Ditto Kris; with three tablespoons of oil and two tablespoons of sugar that’s a 600 calorie sandwich at least! Not that numbers should matter, because it was probably filling and delicious and worth every bite, but I don’t work out as much as Tina and I’m not ready to take that step to intuitive eating yet. If I make it I’ll stick to a thin spread of butter and a sprinkling of sugar instead.
That looks amazing! I love warm banana sandwiches – especially with brown sugar.
What a great treat!
I have yet to try a grilled banana sandwich. They look so amazing!
Seems a bit like your Banana-Stuffed French Toast you at Zaftigs
YUMMY!
Looks delicious! I love warm and gooey bananas. I don’t think it’s too much oil, considering it was a meal and before a workout. Jeesh.
I roasted sliced bananas in the oven with a few dots of butter & a sprinkling of brown sugar. The result is almost identical to Banana Foster that you do in a saute’ pan. Yum!
Add PB and I guess you would have the Elvis sandwich!
@Tamara: My breakfasts are almost always 600-800 calories.
Yummmm… I love that decadent Mike & Patty’s sandwich, and your homemade version looks just as delicious! I need to get out for a jog soon too – before the rain comes (boooo).
Hope you’re having a great weekend!
Just made the grilled banana sandwich. It’s so good! I’m a religious follower of your blog and don’t usually have time to comment because I’m always reading it on the go
I love it, though. Thanks for posting!
maybe use real butter instead of oil! Would really make it rich and change up the flavor…
I want that sandwich, looks amazing!
Yummm… wow, I love my banana PB toast but this takes it a new level.
Tina: I’m so glad you said your breakfasts are usually 600-800 calories. Mine range from 300-600 and I always feel so guilty because my friends eat a fiber one bar for breakfast (150 cals) and call it good. So THANK YOU!
I wish I liked bananas because that sandwich looks yummy!!!
I love bananas and cinnamon mixed.
@Jocelyn: I liked the flavor the way it was!
That sandwich looks SO good, yum!
yes, please! will definitely be trying that sandwich!
Must-try indeed! That sandwich sounds awesome. Cinnamon toast, scoot over to make room for banana cinnamon toast.
So I made the grilled banana sandwich for my mom, to do something nice! And boy did she love this! She can not stop talking about it!
I made almost the same exact breakfast yesterday: banana coconut becan stuffed french toast –super yum!
I don’t care if it’s a lazy woman’s sandwich…that thing looks SO GOOD! I definitely want to try that myself this week. YUMM

Looks amazing! Out of curiosity, what brand of wheat bread did you use?
@Megan @ The Oatmeal Diaries: Usually, Nature’s Pride, but sometimes we just buy what’s on sale.
