Sweet Yoga

Good morning!

I skipped writing this morning, but I did so for good reason: YOGA! Sweet, sweet yoga!

Yoga Challenge

This morning, I did a 20-minute Yoga for Runners session from Yogadownload.com. It was perfect for my, oh, so tight hamstrings and hips. Check out the class description:

Yoga for Runners was designed with the runner in mind, but is a flow for everyone to enjoy. This Power Yoga class helps you to enjoy life to the fullest, and will enhance your experience in any activity you choose: hiking, cycling, climbing, running, walking, or simply going about your busy day. Use this class after any athletic activity to stretch and lengthen your muscles, or any time you are looking to slow down, become focused and create space in your body and mind. Ahhh, you we feel amazing, refreshed, and renewed!

Yoga for Runners was great– my practice, however, was not so great. I’m so inflexible now-a-days! Some of the poses actually hurt! :-? I really enjoyed the lower body stretching and the core work, but I found myself losing my balance and breathing weird a number of times. And, as always, my mind drifted all over the place– to breakfast, book writing, blogging, etc. It’s only my first day back on the yoga train, so I’m sure it’ll get easier the more I practice.

How are you doing with the Yoga Challenge?

Breakfast

I made Mal and me a special breakfast this morning: Pumpkin French Toast!

IMG_6600.JPG

In my Pumpkin French Toast batter was liquid egg whites, vanilla soy milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and a scoop of canned pumpkin, which mixed right in.

IMG_6603.JPG

On the side, I had a small serving of cantaloupe.

IMG_6608.JPG

It was so fun eating French toast during the work week! :-D It’s such a weekend meal to me.

IMG_6609.JPG

IMG_6607.JPG

After a finished eating my Pumpkin French Toast, I decided to mix the rest of my iced coffee with a scoop of chocolate protein powder. I figured that I needed a little more protein in my breakfast.

If there was a magic pill that would keep you in shape, would you still exercise?

My first response to your question was HECK NO! Then I thought well, maybe, kind of…I enjoy cardio the most but in the forms of running & walking so I would continue to do those, but I would skip strength training I am not patient for what I feel is something that needs patience :)
    Have a great day

If there was a magic pill that kept me in shape I would definitely still exercise. Well, cardio, I probably wouldn’t strength train! Nothing like a brisk walk, a run, a hike, a bike ride, or some jumping jacks to ease stress!

I think I would definitely keep at the exercise. I can’t imagine life without it! Its such a part of my routine now.

As far as yoga, I never breathe correctly. I’ve given up on it. I still enjoy yoga without the correct breathing technique.

I would still exercise for sure. I started running 8 years ago, when I taught in an inner city school that was out of control. I would come home every day and take a two hour nap to try to wash the day away. One day, I went walking instead of taking the two hour nap. One day, I decided to run…and the rest is history. Running is a major part of my life. I started out doing it as a stress reliever. Now it is a part of me that I would not give up for anything!

I find yoga in the morning very difficult because I am stiff and haven’t had a chance to warm up my muscles. It would take me about 20 minutes of sun salutations to really be ready to practice.

For me, the best classes I do are at 8:30 at night.

Question (for anyone, really): I’ve only done yoga a couple times, and I liked it…but I was quickly reminded why I had to cut out squats and lunges at the gym – my knees kill! I was disappointed when I had to cut some of the poses short last time I attempted a downloaded class. Anyone has recommendations for alternate poses/classes for those of us with bad knees? Thanks in advance!

    Tina,
really recommend you go to some classes for yoga-
(I personally recommened some hot flow classes or hot yoga).
I find I can focus so much more and get so much more out of yoga menally and physically with a greatb instructor and great class.
The vibe in a good hot yoga class can be so amazing-you won’t believe how the energy helps you through.
I find my mental outlook on life is SO much hetter after attending a hot yoga class, and you sound like you might need something like this to make work life less stressful and more relaxed.
Looking forward to your reviews of some different hot yoga studios(I hope ;)

As for the Yoga question, I started Bob Harper’s Yoga DVD and I like it. It is for weight loss so the poses are designed to target muscles and core strength. Plus, the stretching poses are great! I felt awesome afterward.

I like your question…I like the detoxifying effects of exercise (the sweating!) that makes you feel so good afterwards, even if your muscles are in pain. If there was a pill that would make me in shape I guess I could go to the sauna to do that! But…whats the point of being in shape if you don’t do something with it?! I’ve found the only way to get my mind to shut off during yoga is to take a class at a studio. Being in a calming atmosphere without the distractions of home all around me makes a HUGE difference. Not sure if that would help you with your stress or not…

I’d definitely still work out even taking that pill. The main reason I exercise is to strengthen my knees and recover from two knee injuries. Now if taking a pill would automatically heal my knees? I would still workout for sure, it keeps me balanced mentally, not just physically!

It depends on what this pill could do. If I took it and still felt that “rush” I do after exercise and it still benefited my heart, then sure. I would DEFINITELY prefer to sleep in and pop a pill. I agree that exercise is great stress relief, but bubble baths and a good book are also underutilized tools! Those are the things in life I cut out to fit everything else in. Know what I’m sayin’?

I really think I need to try yoga for runners. I think I would still work out, I really enjoy the runners high.

I would definitely still exercise! even when I was trying to gain weight I exercised in some form daily because of long term benefits and as a stress reliever. I just could never give up long walks on the beach, hikes, or a hardcore sweaty run. That french toast sounds fantastic! Have a great day :)

Yum! The pumpkin French toast looks delicious!

I’m going taking a 90min hot yoga class tonight. It’s my first practice this week. I’ll have to look into that Yoga Download. Sounds like something I could use after a hard workout at the gym.

I probably wouldn’t exercise as much as I do now but I still would take Zumba and walk/run.

I’d still be out walking and biking—it’s stress relief, a fun way to spend time with friends and family and it helps reduce my carbon footprint.

I would absolutely still exercise but their wouldn’t be as much pressure. I can’t imagine not sweating and working out or even RUNNING three times a week! It keeps my sanity in check and helps me feel great, whether I see pounds come off or not!

Even if there was a magic pill I would still exercise. It’s something that’s crucial for your overall health, not just your body shape and image. It helps your mind, body AND soul! :)

I agree with Food Makes Fun Fuel completely – exercise is that magic pill. It’s hard to remember that at 5am when I get up to go to the gym – but it is so true:)

I still haven’t done yoga yet but this is a strong reminder!! That site looks great! Mmmmm french toast + pumpkin = one of the best combos i’ve ever heard of. Must try!

I would still exercise, I need exercise for my mental health too!!

I can’t even remember the last time I had french toast – it’s never appealed to me much, too eggy! But I think the egg white + pumpkin combo would taste so much more delicious :)

Absolutely! But I would be training for something bigger than just staying in shape (like a sport or competition), like I usually am. Rugby is a rough sport ;)

Sometimes, the only time I can steal for myself is the time I spend running/lifting/yoga-ing.
Taking a pill would mean giving up some legitimately selfish “me” time!! That’s a no-go, sister!

YES! I would still run even if I had a magic pill that would keep me fit. I love running so much that I always say that if running never burned a single calorie I would still do it everyday! :) Interesting question though.

My first thought was “Heck no I wouldn’t keep exercising!”. But then I realized that when I’m anxious, frustrated, or listening to some really good music, exercise makes things better. I’d still exercise, but not as much, and I wouldn’t get so angry with myself for skipping workouts!

I would never exercise again!! I wouldn’t have to deal with being sweaty and thirsty and sore. Plus I would have more extra free time spent with my family instead of at the gym alone running off extra chub!!

I’m training for a half marathon (less than a month away) and developed terrible hip pain this past week. I’m guessing it’s from overtraining but don’t know what to do! I can’t run and all forms of crosstraining are crazy painful too. What did you do when hip pain interfered with your training last spring?

Yoga in the morning is one of the best ways to start the day, in my opinion. However, our bodies are tight when we first get up. It’s a good idea to take your time in letting your body ‘wake-up’ and to concentrate more on stretching before moving onto some of the more challenging poses. I just came back from yoga class and I feel amazing! I was actually feeling not 100% before class, and after about 10 minutes of working up a good lather and ‘feeling’ my body, I am feeling great!

as a pharmacist, TONS of college girls have been asking me which diet pill is the best…of course I told them “if there was one that worked, I’d be on it”. Anyhoo…even if I was skinny from the pill, I would still want muscle definition! but if the pill helped with weight loss and magically made me tone…HECK NO.

I just wanted to say “thank you!” for the yoga challenge. I have a slight overuse injury on my hip and I have been doing more weight lifting and different cardio to rest my hip… running was the cause. I decided to try the yoga class today at my gym because of your challenge. It was a great stress reliever and an awesome stretch for my hips! I can see the benefits of doing yoga once a week.
