Brussels Sprouts Get a Bad Rap

March 23, 2010

Am I right? Brussels sprouts get such a bad rap!

From the time that we are little kids, I think we are programmed to think brussels sprouts are “gross.” I know I didn’t want to eat them! I’m sure my response was something like: “Brussels spouts?! Ewww, gross!” But, I’ve come along way since then. Brussels sprouts, especially roasted, are one of my favorite veggies ever.

Turnips also get a bad rap, don’t they? I never liked them as a kid.

Tonight, I did something really crazy and combined the two “hated” veggies into one dish. I’m sure there are a few kids out there who are totally grossed-out right now! ;-)

Thanks to some Roasted Garlic Mustard and leftover pesto, my brussels sprouts + turnip experiment turned out really well.

  • Bake for 35-40 minutes
  • Allow to cool before serving

Mmm! Roasted veggies are the best– even brussels sprouts and turnips! ;-)

IMG_0639.JPG

With the roasted veggies, I also had a piece of toasted whole wheat bread with Pulled BBQ Shreds on top. It was a good dinner tonight!

IMG_0640.JPG

For “dessert,” I ate a million gum drops. I forgot how much I like these things!

Workout

After dinner, Mal and I headed to Body Pump with our friends Dave and Marie. It’s so nice having friends to workout with. Of course, it’s great motivation, but it’s also fun to catch up before and after class.

Body Pump was sooooo tough tonight! We did BP 72 in its entirety and the lunge track totally kicked my butt! I actually felt lightheaded halfway through the track, which has never happened to me. Maybe my mini Body Pump hiatus last week is now affecting me?

In the end, I made it through class just fine. My legs are totally exhausted now, but in a I-worked-really-hard way. Let’s just say that I am going to sleep like a baby tonight!

Snack

Mal and I just turned on American Idol and we’re sipping some chocolate protein shakes. I made mine with non-fat milk and a bunch of ice cubes. It’s exactly what I need after this evening’s butt-kicking workout.

Good night! See ya in the morning!

I never tried brussels sprouts when I was younger because I always heard how gross they were….and then I tried them and fell in LOVE!! Who wouldn’t like baby cabbages??

I’ve never tried roasting brussels sprouts and turnips together. Sounds tasty.

I love roasted anything. Turnips also add a lot of “creaminess” to veggie soups if you blend them in. Mmmm gumdrops!

I have never had brussels sprouts before…it totally does have that “eww gross” stigma!

I really don’t get why some things get a bad rep and others don’t! Why are brussels “gross” and broccoli “tasty?” I think they’re both delicious :D

Brussels are so so good! Of course, they aren’t really in season any more, so I’ve been roasting cabbage instead to get my fix

I remember hating brussel sprouts when I was little!

Now I just can’t get enough of them! I love them!

I don’t think I’ve ever had brussel sprouts…my mom never served them when we were little and I’ve never made them for myself. I’ll have to try though because yours look delicious!

I hated all kinds of veggies, really up until the last year, but now I love veggies like zucchini and Brussels sprouts. I still don’t like greens though. I guess I am not grown up enough for those yet.

Brussel sprouts, turnip, mustard – sounds like a winner to me!!! Love them all! I started loving brussels when I was around 10, I had never had them before that because I thought they were gross!

I love roasting brussels sprouts! I’ve made my family and some of my friends converts. One of them even told me the other day that she’s helping to spread the good repute of roasted brussels sprouts among her friends at school! I don’t think I’ve ever tried a turnip in my life (my parents probably didn’t even try to introduce it) but if you say it’s good, I’ll give it a go!

Turnips always intimidate me because I never know what to do with them. Thank you for this awesome recipe tip. I will most definitely give it a whirl soon. Also, your post got me to thinking about this book I read in the 1st Grade called, “The Giant Turnip,” or something like that. After we read it, our teacher gave our entire class samples of turnip. I don’t remember if I liked it back then, but kudos to my old teacher for trying to combine healthy eating with learning. I think this post would make please Mrs.Gilky. :)

I think part of the reasons brussels sprouts are so hated is because everyone says their hated. I always thought I hated them even though I never tried them. Just because, well, that’s what kids do. When I’m a mom, I’m going to tell my kids everyone else loves them.

Tina- I am in LOVE with brussels sprouts! So glad you gave them a shout out! I roast mine halved, flat side down, in toasted seseme oil for like 15 min…then add tamari sauce and tad of water over the top for another 5 min or so…yummo- like candy! :)

I *LOVE* brussel sprouts. I didn’t start eating them until about a year ago. My family never ate fresh veggies growing up, so it wasn’t really an option. But I love boiling them for a few minutes and then roasting them with just some salt and pepper.
My only problem is what happened after eating them ;(

I love brussel sprouts. Eat them all the time. I trim them, cut in half, toss in olive oil and salt and roast them at 450 degrees. Quick and easy…yum! :)

They totally get a bad rap. In fact I hadn’t had them until about a year ago even though my BF loves them. I wonder how I went more than five years without making them for him since I’m always trying to get him to eat more veggies. Anyways, the point is – I do not like them. Not even a bit, and I love anything roasted. Blehhhhhhhhhh!

Those veggies are soooooo bitter, which is why I hated them growing up. The only way I will eat turnips is if they are mashed and loaded up with butter and sugar. Yes I am serious and Yes it is delicious! Seems to only show up on the plate at Christmas though, hmm. :)

Brussels sprouts are one of my favourite vegetables, but I really can’t eat them anymore, since they severely aggravate my stomach. As does my all-time favourite vegetable, kumara (New Zealand white-fleshed, red-skinned sweet potato). It’s *so* annoying.

And it’s a bit embarrassing that I’m sitting here reading healthy living blogs and can’t stop staring lustfully at the dish of gum drops, hee. I think some jelly beans and dark chocolate might be in my dessert future!

My mother sold us brussel sprouts as “princess sprouts” when we were little “Because they are so small and tender, they were originally only for princesses”

we always ate them :)

I loooooooooooove brussels sprouts, especially in roasted form! I wasn’t a picky eater as a kid, I ate all of my veggies and even loved squid. :D

I love gardein pulled BBQ shreds, it’s SO yummy and tastes just like the real deal.

Roasted veggies are THE way to go. Thanks to a high oven temperature, I now enjoy vegetables I hated as a kid. Brussels, kale, cauliflower, broccoli… yum!

I love brussels sprouts. And gum drops. And Body Pump.
Roasted brussels sprouts are the best, as is roasted rutabega. I may have to try turnips, next.
We’ve been doing the lunge track from 69 or 70..the one with the three quarter squats thrown in. It’s a killer, too. Somedays are just tougher than others.
