I can’t believe that it’s already Friday! I’m not complaining– but, man, did this week fly by! Why can’t all work weeks be like this?!
I woke up bright and early with my hubby this morning. It’s nice to have some quiet time to ourselves while the little Gremlin sleeps. Once he’s awake, it’s all about him!
Breakfast
For breakfast this morning, I made us a big batch of oats with ground flaxseed meal, carob soy milk, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. I topped our bowls with trail mix and a scoop of Barney Butter.

I really wish that I had a banana to throw into the mix, but this was still a good batch of oatmeal.

Like usual, I enjoyed a glass of iced coffee with my breakfast.

Valentine’s Day 2010
Are you looking forward to Valentine’s Day? I definitely am! I love love!
Tomorrow morning, Mal and I are exchanging our $10 (or less) gifts and then Beth and Corey arrive tomorrow night for a mini vacation in Boston. I’m psyched to show them around our city. We have some cool stuff on the agenda!
Last night, Mal and I reminisced about past Valentine’s Days. It was fun to read old blog posts about what we did to celebrate– another benefit of starting a blog!

Q & A with Ashley Koff
I recently had the opportunity to ask Los Angeles-based nutritionist Ashley Koff a couple of questions– one about sugar (how much is too much?) and one about multivitamins and supplements. She replied to each of them in a personalized video segment. Check out the links below for Ashley’s responses.

Question of the Day
Speaking of sugar…
As some of you know, Ellen has recently embarked on a sugar cleanse. Have you ever tried to eliminate/reduce the amount of sugar in your diet? How did it go?
Personally, I think that I eat too much sugar, but I’m not sure that I would do well with a sugar cleanse. I love sweet treats too much!

I reduced my sugar intake to 22g of added sugar a week.. it was surprisingly hard! Flavored yogurts and luna bars did me in!
Sugar cleanse is extremely tough. I spent a long time on Atkins phase 1 (less than 20 carbs a day) It’s tough, but gets rid of belly fat fast. Of course it made me too weak to workout.
Last year I did two 12-week challenges with no added sugars – real or fake. The first one was very hard, but it really changed the way I eat. The second one was definitely easier, because after the first one I didn’t add a lot of the sugar back in. I have a huge sweet tooth though, so I like to keep myself honest about how much sugar I am actually eating. I highly recommend it!!
I’ve been without sugar/corn syrups for more than 2 years, now. It was difficult to say goodbye to my favorite substance, but now I feel wonderful and don’t ever want to feel like a slave to sugar again! There are so many wonderful natural sweeteners, but you can get carried away eating them, too. Anyway, I don’t know if what I did was a “cleanse”, I just simply quit the white stuff! I feel too good to ever want to eat it again, although of course sometimes I fantasize what a big frosty donut would taste like–since it’s been so long since I’ve eaten one!
I do still ingest sugar, but I have cut back. Now I know it really isn’t good for the body and all it really is is unneeded extra calories–no nutritional value at all. I do use SweetLeaf brand of stevia in baking, smoothies, or whatever I want to sweeten–it has 0 calories, 0 carbs and a 0 GI. Again it’s not like don’t take in sugar, but I do cut back and I believe I’m better off for it!
