So Glad You’re Here, Friday

February 26, 2010

So, Mal, Murphy, and I had a slow start to our Friday.

Mal and Andy didn’t get home from the bar until 12:30, which meant that I didn’t get back to sleep until well past 1:00 AM. After a few lot of beers, the guys decided to wake me up because they wanted to hangout. Aren’t they sweet? Oh, well, at least they were entertaining! ;-)

Murphy was also tired this morning. His life is seriously SO HARD. I don’t know how he gets through each day.

Breakfast

Not surprisingly, my poor husband didn’t feel 100% when he woke up this morning. So, when he asked for banana oatmeal for breakfast, I just couldn’t turn him down. Plus, I love banana oats, too! ;-)

In the mix:

This morning’s batch of oats was really creamy– perhaps because of the almond milk?

And, I had some wonderful iced coffee with breakfast this morning.

With St. Patty’s Day coming up, I’m really looking forward to my mom’s corn beef and cabbage. My mom’s side of the family is Irish. My dad’s is Italian.

What is your heritage?

I’m Scots-Irish.

Contrary to popular belief, being Scots-Irish isn’t just a combo of Scottish and Irish. It’s actually technically it’s own ethnicity! Either way, we love oatmeal just like our ancestors! :)

OMG. When my bf and his friends go drinking they always wake me up when they come home. They think it’s a compliment that they wanna hang out with me but I just get grumpy and they regret their decision. :)

I am mostly Irish with a little French and German. My grandma used to always make corned beef and hash for Saint Patrick’s Day!

I’m 15/16 Irish and 1/16 Danish. Was raised super-Irish, step-dancing and all! I was always frustrated to have a Danish last name and was determined to marry an O’Malley or McGraff, but ended up falling in love with and marrying nice Jewish Katz :) I can’t wait to make St. Patty’s goodies!

German and Hungarian :)

I am a mix of French (50%), Danish (25%), Czech, and Polish. I ended up inheriting all the Danish traits though :) Despite the fact that there isn’t a drop of Irish blood in my family, we alway celebrated St. Pat’s Day with a dinner of corned beef and cabbage. Loved it!

Completely Australian, through and through. In fact, someone in teh family did research and discovered that we are, in fact, descended from a convict. :D I love that banana oats is Mal’s nourishing go-to- brekkie :)

I’m 50% German, 25% Native American (Micmac – a tribe in south east Canada), and then a little bit of French, Yugoslavian, Hungarian. However, everyone who first meets me thinks I’m Spanish lol. Then when they find out my heritage they laugh. It must be my dark complexion that throw’s them off.

i’m a lot of German and English with some Norwegian and Cherokee mixed in…what a mix, right? :) BUT my husband’s Italian, and I totally love what I know about Italian culture, so I’d definitely consider myself Italian now too!

I’m a total mutt. I’ve got about 7 different nationalities packed into me, but primarily I’m Norweigan, German, and French. I’m a little bit Irish, English, Swiss, and something else.

I’m on the South Side of Chicago, home of the South Side Irish, so St. Patty’s Day is a pretty much a huge deal. (There’s even a South Side Irish song. Seriously, Google it.) So even though my family is only vaguely Irish, EVERYONE in my neighborhood is Irish on St. Patrick’s day. Every year my dad makes corned beef and cabbage. I love the smell of corned beef, but I hate the way it tastes. (Which I think it pretty backwards from most other people.) Every year I convince myself this is going to be the year I enjoy corned beef, and every year I’m reminded just how much I detest corned beef.

I’m soooo glad it’s Friday too! My heritage – my family is Canadian through and through! We’ve been here for 5 generations and are even related to our very first Prime Minister!!! As a side note – when my Grandma was a little girl (she passed away last year- would have been 98 this month) she actually lived in a sod house in the prairies -yup, a grass house! Imagine that in the winter!

My heritage is mostly Danish! I love how my first name reflects my mom’s Danish heritage (it means “ruler of all” in Scandanavia) and my last name reflects my dad’s French-Canadian heritage (“of the bay”). I’m so excited to be preregistering soon for next years’ courses; I want to take a ballet class in Denmark, and then stay there for the summer with the third cousins I have yet to meet!

The majority of my heritage is German. But I do remember that I LOVED celebrating St. Patrick’s Day when I was little. A “leprechaun” would turn our milk green and in preschool we’d leave our shoes there overnight… when we came back in the morning they were filled with glitter and candy!

hi tina! i’ve been reading your blog for a while now and i think your so inspirational! so i have a question. for a couple of years i’ve been really self contious of my body. so last year i decided to make a healthy change in my diet and increased my exercising. but when i always see my friends, i always get discouraged because they have really unhealthy eating habits. they can eat whatever they want and never gain weight. i cant help but feel like its unfair because i’m the one who eats healthy and exercises, not them but i cant help but compare my body to theirs. has this every happened to you? how to you cope? and i’m sorry this post is so long!

Hey Tina!

Poor Mal!!! He looks so down in that pic..lol. He’s such a good sport!

I am of Cape Verdean descent. Since your from Beantown I’m sure you’ve come across a couple of Cape Verdeans (maybe?!? Huge population in Dorchester, Roxbury, etc.). Cape Verde is made up of 10 islands off the West coast of Africa (across from Sengal). My family is from the island of Fogo! Beautiful place to visit if you and Mal ever need a vacay ;)

We have something in common – I’m 1/2 Irish and 1/2 Italian too! However, it adds up a little different. My Mom’s Mom was 100% Italian and Mom’s Dad was 100% Irish and my Dad’s Dad was 100% Italian and Dad’s Mom was 100% Irish – wooh! =)

I also love corned beef and cabbage, but will have to make it myself as my parents live in a different State!

Love your little guy, Murphy – he is a cutie! We almost got a pug awhile back, but decided on English Bulldogs and have two of them, which we love (Mia and Mario – “Italian” English Bulldogs – hehe!)

Happy Friday!

Murphy and my dog Norman (poodle shitzu mix) need to get together to talk about how hard their lives are. Norman can easily snooze all morning if he can crawl into a warm lap.

I’m half Norwegian, 1/4 English and Austrian. Although grew up in “Alaska’s Little Norway” so I’m more Norwegian than anything else.

March 17 is my sister’s b-day so it usually was filled with birthday cake and whatever my sister wanted to eat for dinner.

Wow – how nice of your husband! I probably would have killed mine, though our floors seem so thin that I’m sure I would have been awake anyway – I probably wouldn’t have hung out, but I would definitely have gone down to tell them to be quiet. LOL!

My dad is Scottish and my mom is German. Of course, I’m adopted and am part Indian and part European-mumble-jumble, so I have a LOT of places in me! Maybe that’s why I want to travel so much? LOL!

I’m mostly German on both mom’s and dad’s side … but there’s a little French and Irish thrown in there somewhere, too. One of the dishes mom used to make a lot (that actually sounds good right now) is sausage and sauerkraut. I LOVE sauerkraut.
